Gtx 480 dry ice run

Lays
First ever plunge into subzero on a GPU, done my CPU a few times before this, GPU was much different.  I think almost easier really... Sort of!

I had some issues with cold slow BIOS not flashing, Bassplayer helped me out though.  I think the firmware that's "supposed" to disable OCP on my 480 didn't work, because I was having issues past 1.3v.

Here are some results and pics, as well as volts & temps from my PNY reference 480 on DICE
I may go back through some other time with dice on CPU as well, but I don't think it will get me first place so I doubt I will bother.  I will go after some other benches next time.

Is that card burnt from the cold?

Nope, still functional.

I covered the card in "Liquid electrical tape" as seen in this guide, to protect the PCB + components:

Ln2 = liquid nitrogen

DICE = dry ice

It's black from the Liquid electrical tape, it is like thick paint basically, but you can peel it off extremely easily.  It's like plasti-dip.

Well, that's a change from the usual ~100C that 480s get xD

The only reason 480s run hot is because their stock coolers become big heat plates after being under load for so long unless the fan is at 100% to move air through.

Can't on a reference card, VRM will die 100%.  I'd need Ln2 as well, and the transportation device for Ln2 is really expensive (like $400)

I have a friend with a 30L one... He only wants $200 after shipping, but I can't justify spending it.

use a bunch of thermos containers

No Ln2 place will fill those for you and let you drive off with em.

You need a certified container to transport it.

Was considering trying this on a 760! Only issue is the BIOS, and hardware mod I have to do to bypass the voltage limit.

Cody's lab youtube channel says otherwise

Does he have a video of him taking a bunch of thermos to an Ln2 supplier and filling them?

Or just videos of him pouring Ln2 out of a thermos?

He didn't beat my 580 though :P He will need his matrix to do that :)

My 560ti and 480 feel quite rekt though.

Of course he can accidentally 1 click order a 480 on ebay and get better GPUs than I get after going through like 4 :P

hey @Lays will you be modding your 480/580 with some additonal power boards (like evga epower) or is it too much for a DICEd gpu?
