Skype hides IP addresses to protect users

If you have ever paid any attention to gaming communities or the streaming crowd, you would have definitely heard of people getting DDoS'd left and right from Skype IP addresses.  Well, Microsoft has/will release an update that hides the user's IP by default (previously it defaulted to show IP on contacts page).  Just last night I was watching a streamer I regularly watch and he got DDoS'd 5 mins into the start of the stream.

 

You may not be one of the above people, but IP privacy is still worth a lot for people who care.  An IP can give you a general location on where you are, and although not pinpoint accurate is accurate enough for unscrupulous activities to take place.  Kudos to Microsoft for the change!

 

 

After initially allowing users to choose whether they wanted to share their IP address with contacts, the company's latest update will now hide their details from other Skype users by default. Microsoft says the measure will "prevent individuals from obtaining a Skype ID and resolving to an IP address," which won't only protect gamers, but other Skype users who may be targeted by online trolls. Before Microsoft enabled the feature, gamers used third-party workarounds to keep themselves safe. Its latest update removes that hassle and lets players get back to pwning the competition without fear of reprisals.

Don't really care.  Haven't used Skype in a long time.  Mostly been using Curse, TS3, and Discord, all of which hide your IP.

TS3 doesn't hide your IP to admins and moderators though.

The mod stuff got cleared. We discussed it and now they're are 2 more admins. The mod's behaviors is being discussed with a group of people including me (and the mods) and slick and some other dudes.

There is a plugin for TS that allow you to make videocalls, but I havent tryed it my self.

Glad I switched to Trillian long ago...

I used skype for a few months after Microsoft killed MSN in favor of Skype, then I saw it had the IP issue, that it was a terrible IM client overall... From there me and a friend switched to a few IM clients and Trillian ended up being the one that won us over. Mostly because we can send pictures, screen captures and what not to each other without having to download anything, it just display for the other to see. Which we use a lot... in 2 years we've sent each other over 15k pictures/screen captures. (they are saved in a trillian temp folder, can always delete them, I won't)
