AMD Looks Ahead to Polaris to Become Profitable by the End of 2016

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su admitted that 2015 proved a "challenging" year from a financial standpoint, but found reasons to be optimistic for the company's future. One of those reasons is Polaris.

 

 

 

 

 

One of the positives for AMD is that its losses, while significant, are shrinking. In the same quarter a year ago, AMD posted a loss of $364 million, which it was able to reduce to $197 million in the third quarter of 2015. That's not exactly cause to pop open a bottle of bubbly, but at the pace AMD is going, it could be profitable by the end of the 2016.

 

 

 

While investors aren't as convinced, I am convinced that Polaris is going to be a big step for the return of AMD. Just seeing it's capabilities at CES already says what 14nm chips can do. Hopefully AMD fans like me will see the competition the hardware market desperately needs.

 

And despite the big losses people are recording, keep in mind that it isn't nearly as big a loss as the quarter before that.

Polaris needs to atleast match Pascal otherwise RIP AMD and RIP reasonably priced volta gpus

It has to be as powerful as Pascal and cheaper then they will rack in the money. Otherwise if it is slightly less  powerful for the same price people will not but it. Case and point GTX980ti vs Fury X

It has to be as powerful as Pascal and cheaper then they will rack in the money. Otherwise if it is slightly less powerful for the same price people will not but it. Case and point GTX980ti vs Fury X

I don't doubt AMD's potential to make a great GPU. For example, the rebranded 300 series is still highly competitive against the 900 series.

The only thing I'm skeptical about is how Zen is going to turn out. They are going from a 32nm manufacturing process to a 14nm process. Zen is either going to knock heads or it's going to be close to skylake imo.

I honestly question if it will even be out by the end of the year but yes, I agree that even if it does come out, it will be too late to make a substantial mark on 2016 profit.

it will be. They were aiming for Q3 initially, but moved it to "last quarter" or Q4...

 

ZEN should hit right around the holyday season.

Why do we always get the same sentence: "If X company does not deliver, Y company will jack up the price"

I mean Intel's i7 here in Australia are always around $510 if you adjust inflation and such, there was never a time where it went up drastically, it is always the same every year, logically speaking if prices goes up, people will buy less of their product to the point where the price increase would not be able to compensate for the lower sales.

 

If Nvidia's next equivalent of a GTX 750 Ti is $100 more expensive than the intended original price, then I think it will hurt their sales more than keeping the same price at the same performance bracket every year. Intel has virtually has no competition at the higher-end consumer grade CPUs for many years now since like the original FX-8xxx CPUs but I haven't yet seen Intel prices changed.

 

The price increase will not be the result of a non-competitive market, the impact would be the lack of innovation or improvement that it brings to the market.

People are so wrong, just because nVidia sells much more then amd it doesnt mean their cards are actually better cause they really are not only at the very high end (980ti>furyx) nvidia pulls ahead otherwise 390X 390 380 ... So on outperforms their counterparts so its not like they dont match them atm

While investors aren't as convinced, I am convinced that Polaris is going to be a big step for the return of AMD. Just seeing it's capabilities at CES already says what 14nm chips can do. Hopefully AMD fans like me will see the competition the hardware market desperately needs.

 

And despite the big losses people are recording, keep in mind that it isn't nearly as big a loss as the quarter before that.

 

The article refers to the stock price of AMD as an insight of investor confidence, which is a terrible move. 

 

The stock market has had the most volatile 3 weeks in the history. It's not a good indicator for investor confidence, when it has more to do with the slow down of Chinese economy. 

 

Intel, Nvidia, AMD all took a nose dive until today. AMD is up 14% as I write this. 

 

Q4 revenues were down, but losses were down as well. It's a decent news going forward.
