is Nero essentials free? 

Nero doesn't allow you to rip a bluray to a single media file (.m2ts, .mkv, etc...). does it?

Nero Recode does do  does it iirc. 

That's $40, at that point I would probably go with Acrock's for $50~ as I've heard good things about that whereas I've never had a decent experience with Nero.
