MSI GTX 960 4GB or MSI R9 380?

Hi so recently ive managed to sell my gtx 950 2gb to my friend and now im looking for a new card to replace mines. on newegg and b&h i saw the MSI GTX 960 Gaming 4GB and i also saw the MSI R9 290 there as well. both are the same price at $229.99 so i cant really decide which card to get. Ive read that the R9 290 has better performance compared to the GTX 960. if this true then what is the pros and cons of these 2 cards. i have an Antec EA-650w PSU so im covered on the power supply. any help is appreciated. also what are the temps on the r9 290 and the gtx 960 when under load?

wow very fast replies but what are the cons to the r9 290? like does it run much hotter? does it use alot more power? do i need a 8pin or 6pin connector to power it?

Uses more power and runs a bit hotter because it's simply more powerful. You would need an 8 pin and a 6 pin to power it. What's your current PSU?

Uses more power because it's a beast compared to a 960. You will be fine.

You'd be perfectly fine running a 290 off of that.

Which 290 though. If it's some reference model it will be loud as hell and throttle, making the deficit considerably smaller compared to the 960.

the MSI version with 4gb vram and the Gaming OC edition

290 definitely, It will run much more hot, but it will have much more performance. The 960 will be cooler, and more power efficient, but with a big drop in performance.

290 is roughly 50% more powerful.

More like 60-70% depending on the resolution. And the 290 scales very well with overclocks. You can easily get it to 390 performance and up.

My MSI 290 was 77c at stock and fairly quiet. If you overclock a bit you'll probably get it to the mid 80s. No problem getting it to 390 performance with not much temperature bump. The 290 absolutely crushes the 960. They're in completely different performance brackets. 960 is entry level- low end while 290 is comparable with mid-high end cards like the 970/390.

AMD Phenom X4 9750

Wait what, why did you sell the 950. A 290 will never want to play with that CPU...

because i had a client that needed a budget gaming pc and plus next year im going to rebuild my current rig.

R9 380 is 15% faster than a 960. Not as good as a 290 but still more powerful. Power usage across both is pretty identical and temperatures will also be similar. 380 is the clear winner
