980Ti Power requirements.

I am considering adding a second 980 Ti.  However I worry my AX860 will not be enough.  

I have tried a number of PSU calculators and keep coming up with different number so I thought the best way to get an answer is to ask. 

 

Current system.

  • 5820K running at 4.5Ghz 1.28V (may upgrade this when the new 6XXX series comes out)
  • Asus X99 Deluxe
  • EVGA 980TI
  • EK DDC Pump for cooling loop. 
  • 7 Corsair fans ran by an NZXT Grid +
  • Generic LED lights.  probably upgrading to a Hue + in the coming weeks.  
  • 6 SATA SSDs and a M.2 SSD

 

I hate to spend another 200+ on a new PSU if I don't need it.  However if I do then I do.

860W should be fine.

It's going to depend on how much you overclock really, non reference 980 TI with a custom BIOS and a big OC can easily do 300+ watts.

860w is plenty for 2 sli, the 980ti is pretty efficient all things considered and doesn't draw that much power

It draws around the R9 290X mark but somehow people say that a  980Ti doesn't draw "that much power", I haven't seen anybody say that about a 290X :P

Current one is a standard EVGA model.  Not even the SC model.  I do have a minor overclock on it.   If I got another it would be a matching model.

You will most likely be OK, but if you do modify the BIOS and do a benchmark like say.. Firestrike with your CPU at 1.35v or higher and the GPU's above 1500, you may run into power problems.

The 290x is outclassed by the 980ti it terms of performance hence the "all things considered" remark, besides 850W is what I'd say is fine for those xfired as well

I know but we're not talking performance per watt, we're talking power consumption, nobody seems to be bothered by the 980Ti power draw and yet they flame 290X's for example for that :P A 980Ti is obviously a more efficient card

For me it wasn't the power draw it was the heat.  And I think a lot of people get the two confused.

Yeah well, power draw = heat output pretty much.

Semi thread Res I know.  However for anyone who was also wondering.   I purchased a Power Meter.   Total system draw with overclocks while in Firestrike and stress testing never went over 500 Watts
