WD Red 4TB GIVEAWAY!

LinusTech

I am running one single Samsung EcoGreen 1.5TB drive, and it's terrible and slow, but needed something better and this drive had great value. My music library is all located on my Synology NAS with a 1TB WD Green drive in there, I'd also backup my moms pictures to my NAS through (SSH/rsync) and from there I make like once a week a backup to an LaCie 500GB external drive. Important programming projects are pushed to Bitbucket. Waiting for the SSD's to drop in price a little bit more and soon enough I need to get a replacement for that external drive as well, just a poor student with no income, you know

Hitachi 500gb HDD split into 120/380 for boot and storage.
WD 2tb HDD for mostly storage
WD 500gb HDD for video editing storage.

I used had the Hitachi first and ran out of space quickly, purchased the 2tb for more storage and then found an old 500gb WD and used that for storage as well.

I have a toshiba 2tb as my boot drive, and a 1tb for important file backups. If I had more money I'd switch to higher capacity, preferably in raid for extra data safety.

using a Sandisk Extreme 240GB SSD in my desktop and the 120GB flavor in my laptop. Superb speed bump for OS/browsing on what are essentially 4 year old devices. And they were cheap to boot, got the 120GB at staples for $50 after coupons, for instance.

I use a 500 GB WD hard drive. That's it. I thought of using/buying an SSD but I simply can't affors one because, in India the prices are hyping up as the value of Dollar goes up to 70 INR (that's 1 dollar)

Hope I win this give away, so that I can backup all my important pictures and docs onto the NAS, so that I wouldn't worry about my HDD failing. Because I've been using it for 2 years now. Hope I win this. Really excited. If I win this, It'll be my first NAS and the first thing I won in a Giveaway

I only have my 500 GB WD drive of my laptop and a 640GB WD drive from an older laptop, the 640 is for backups and partition images so I can restore my laptop without much difficulty.

I don't have any disposable income to even buy a new drive :( My 640GB drive has 4 years and I used it intensively over the 2 years it was on my last laptop, so it can really fail at any time now :/ I have a lot of things in my current laptop but because I use it and travel with it the drive is also vulnerable.

WD is amazing but these drives are just not certified for such a heavy use.

The WD Red would be a huuuuuge upgrade for me, it would be really amazing to have some peace of mind knowing that my data was safe in a drive that's certified for heavy usage, I honestly have no idea when my backup drive is going to fail so I upload some of the most important stuff to cloud services but it's just not enough...

Thank you Linus and WD for this opportunity,  hope I win something :3

I currently have a Toshiba 596 gb hard drive in my laptop and a 1 tb seagate external with all of my steam games on it. I have this set up because I wanted to install all 109 of my steam games and there was no way they would fit on my laptop alone.

I'm running a single Seagate 2.5" 750GB 7200rpm drive in my laptop. I'm using it because it was the most capacity I could get my hands on without sacrificing speed without getting an SSD because I couldn't afford it. I use it for games and homework [games don't take up much space any more after my GPU died :( ].

I have a 1TB SATA Hard Drive in my computer (I can't remember the exact company, it may actually be WB though), I need it for video recording, and editing software, tons of videos kept on my computer, music, tons of programs, gaming, etc. Though I've only had it for a couple of months now and it's already reduced by half! 4TB would be great for the long run! :)

I'm currently running a single Hitachi 500GB HDD. I haven't completed my build but I've planned for a 120GB Samsung SSD for OS drive and one 1TB or more WD Green for storage.

The reason I want a Green drive is for silence. I'm trying to make a build that's as silent as possible within a reasonable budget. It should be inaudible in a silent case like the Fractal Design Define R4. Maybe if one is very quite, I'll add another for a RAID 0 config.

I also have an old 160GB HDD that has one of two partition dead. Two other partition is still usable, albeit very slowly. Nobody knows that. Maybe it will be useful to hide stuff in a hot swap usage. ;)

System: Samsung 830

Storage: WD Caviar Black 1TB

Got a job and bought SSD for the first time. Very nice upgrade when you've run only mechanical drives so far. Caviar handles the games and random crap storage now.

In the three pcs I have owned recently they primarily are just used for surfing and gaming.  The socket 775 pc, 1st ever I built for my son, now only has a 160 GB or so WD hard drive in it.  We loaned the pc to my father and really considering he only surfs and plays web games he doesn't need more than that.  As for my current gaming rig it has a WD Caviar Black 700+ GB hard drive and a very new Seagate Barracuda 3 TB hard drive in it.  My son's pc has something very similar as his sports a WD Caviar Black 640 GB hard drive and a Seagate Barracuda 3 TB hard drive in it.

Let me say if I was downloading warez now like in the old days I could not imagine how much storage space I would need and gosh forbid I ever get into video and picture editing for a hobby. :o

Story time

I once had an old Acer (core2duo) notebook which was getting slow, used it as student at the time. The main drive had just 120GB of HDD space, so I used a Freecom 1TB and a 500GB external HDD for mass storage. I had no money for a new pc at the time, so decided to upgrade it with a OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS SDD. At that time, the SDD prices where still high (250 euro for 120 GB model!) Very excited with a first SDD, but I couldn't get it to work in my notebook (no ahci option in bios, no bios upgrade available). Windows 7 install literally lasted all day, and the system froze every few seconds. I was so disappointed with this purchase, because I was back where I started with less money.

After a few months (November 2011). i decided I wanted to build a custom pc to replace the notebook (didn't need it for college anymore), but again I didn't have the money for the ultimate gaming pc I really wanted to build. I found a great deal (Acer Aspire desktop, i7-2600) for cheap (HDD prices where still insane because of the flood, so that was my only budget option at the time. This one had a 1TB drive build in, and I still used the external drives for mass storage. After a few months (March 2012 by then) when I thought, let's buy a AMD Radeon 7870 GPU, but it looked like the GPU was to big for the prebuild Acer case.

At that time, I had gained more experience into the tech and how to build a pc (thank you Linus :)), that I decided to buy a brand new Corsair 500R case and build all the components from the Acer case to the new one. Finnally, I could try if the OCZ Vertex 3 I mentioned earlier could work in my system. And gladly, it worked! So my final config that I still use at the moment:

- OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS 120 GB (boot drive, Windows 8 pro, few games, programs)

- Seagate 1TB (The one that was the boot drive in my Acer desktop, mass storage)

- Freecom external HDD 1TB (mass storage, it's connected but don't use it that often)

- Freecom external HDD 500GB (movies/series backups, not connected at the moment)

The only thing I'm still missing at this moment, is a secure backup solution. I think WD Red 4TB in a nice NAS config would be an awesome solution :)

I got my PC for a year now and still haven't upgraded to more storage. The horror haha! At the moment I'm running a Seagate 2TB ST2000DM001 green hard drive in Raid 1 I believe (not sure though, I don't know anything about this raid stuff, my dad does). It's kinda slow, but still performs well and is very quiet. I needed a large hard drive because I have a lot of games, programs and recorded videos for my video-editing projects. I only got 100GB of space left and I haven't spoken about my laptop where my backup is at.

Anyway, I shared the giveaway for an extra entry:

I have a Samsung 120 GB SSD as my boot drive (and my only INTERNAL drive) at the moment. I was running on a tight budget and of all the SSD's i saw at the price point this was pretty much a no brainer. Also the performance graphs looked pretty decent on the videos of yours and I am very happy with it. I also made myself an EXTERNAL STEAM drive.. which worked out pretty well... it just takes a while to load.. but the games run just fine..I was thinking of getting a SEAGATE 1 TB drive.. but thats just for the heck of it..

I am running a SEAGATE barracuda 1TB, I bought it when I assembled my pc and was on a budget(the HDD was cheap and had good reviews on the net). The reason I got the 1TB is because I need enough storage for my porn :D. I also have an external 500MB WD "my passport" for backup and other data such as movies. My next upgrade would probably be a 120GB samsung 840 pro ssd for my boot drive and for using some programs and games.
