WD Red 4TB GIVEAWAY!

LinusTech

1) I needed an small server, to run some minor stuff to automate some stuff. I just checked what else stuff i can put in it to just not be wasting space, and i thought i can make a small file server that i can access either from LAN or FTP, it's nothing big, i would love more space and more robust HDD but don't have the money for that.

My setup for HDDs is:

1.) My main computer. Here I've got a Samsung F3 1TB 7200rpm, single one for OS, Adobe stuff and games. Next one is two Samsung F3 Samsung 1TB 7200rpm in RAID0. Reason why 2 x 1TB instead of 1 x 2TB drive is that I needed the speed. RAID0 is a increasement of reading. I store my video footage in this drive and it's quite fast for video editing. After this, I've got a one Samsung F4EG 2TB 5400rpm drive for my RAW photos. I use it to store them and I edit them from it too. Then, I've got a second Samsung F4EG 2TB 5400rpm drive which isn't located inside my case. It's in a separate docking station with eSATA connection. It's not connected to my PC 24/7, I use it as a offsite backup drive. There I've got all my photos. Short, it's a clone of the first F4EG drive.

For externals, I've got one Western Digital Elements 2TB for all backup of the projects, photos, files and all kind of stuff. It's crypted, it's scheduled and it's compressed. Next one is Western Digital MyBook 4TB USB3.0 drive which does almost the same as the Elements except here I've got recorded programs and complete clone of my OS. All crypted, all scheduled and compressed. Then I've got a small Transcend 320GB Storejet where I've got loads of miscellaneous files and also, photos of the three latest projects.

No SSD, unfortunately...

I have two intel 330 120GB SSDs in RAID0 as my boot drive as I needed the extra capacity and could not purchase a 240GB drive. I have a low power 2TB HDD, standard 7200rpm 1TB and 2TB drives and a 2TB external. I really want the security of a RAID5/6 array though and am currently looking into this.

Thanks guys :)

I currently have a Dlink-323 NAS with two 1TB HDDs running RAID-1. I have this to store all of my family's digital pictures and camcorder footage (I've got two little kids, so lots of pics and video gets taken). I've done this so that if a hard drive crashes, I haven't lost all those digital memories. However, it's already maxed out, so I'm now starting to store new stuff on my desktop's 1TB HDD.

I'm actually looking to replace my two-bay NAS with a 4 or 5 bay NAS running RAID-5 or RAID-6, with either 3TB or 4TB HDDs. This would give me room to grow into the future, and let it be a media server to watch all our family memories.

Anyone who has a digital camera or any digital media should have a some kind of backup system (NAS running RAID-1 being the easiest) so as not to lose pictures, video, music, etc.

I have currently a 2x 2tb external harddrives as storage space, and a 256Gb samsung ssd for all the necessary software that i need for my hobby, which includes a lot of pictures and a hd-videos.

I will run out of space soon, and i have been looking for a good solution which has huge amount of space, but havent managed to find a solution for a decent prize.

What i would not consider future proof is SSD, just don't buy it now. Too expensive for the amount of money spent for the little storage. Bad value to me and they live very short time if they get over-used by people.

HDDs all the way. I love HDDs. If i needed speed, I'd wire up multiple HDDs, like 4x 1TB HDDs, and I would get nice speeds and a lot of storage, even considering very high chance of losing all data (but it's not like I would care anyway, I never download anything but all my 500 steam games) - but then that can be countered with some RAID10. If you have money you can wire up really huge amounts of HDDs for incredible speeds and/or redundancy. I love it. The scalability is awesome!!!

That actually reminded me that my WD Green is getting old - I'm running out of storage, I'm actually trying to keep all my 250 games + another 300 DLCs from Steam on my HDD at all times. I'm running short of the 2TB, and I need to get some newer, faster HDDs for a RAID0 set. :/

I am currently running two WD Red 3TB drives in RAID 1 inside a Iomega/Lenovo Storcentre ix2-dl. While I would have loved to stick 4-5 of those in a big Synology system, the price would kill me. I use the NAS for my ripped DVD and CD collection to stream to the stereo and TV's, as well as to store the around-home surveillance camera stream.

I chose the WD Red's for their reliability and NAS-specific design. I have also had good experience with WD over the years. Cheers !

I use only SSDs in my rig as I want it to be as quiet as possible.

2x Samsung 830 64GB (one for system the other for a vm)

1x Samsung 830 512GB (programs & games)

I would use those WD Red drives in my NAS or in a server I'm planning to build.

My current storage setup is two Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD:s in RAID 0, i run only that, because when i build my system i was stupid, and i wanted to have max. storage speed, i would want buy HDD for storage, buy gasoline is expensive.

1. I was running a D-Link DNS-323 NAS for years, but they won't support drives larger than 2TB. I tried custom firmware but it was buggy and couldn't get it to work. I ended up putting a 3TB which I bought into my HTPC (which has an SSD and no mechnical drives previously.) This kinda ruined the noise and heat reason behind a HTPC. I was streaming well enough from my old NAS. If I won, I would get a NAS to put these puppies in!

I currently run 1 Samsung 840 120gb as my OS drive and 2 1tb reds in raid 0 with daily backups to an external 2tb wd green.

I got them for far cheaper than the 2tb for some reason and I needed 2tb so I had to run them in raid0, so I took an old 2tb green and use it as my backup drive ever since.

I I would win the drives I would put them ina RAID 1, because I don't really need the speed of raid0 and the redundancy would increase AND the convenience. running daily backups can get annoying at times..

If I won 4 I'd go with a RAID10, because I don't (yet) need 12tb with a RAID5 and the write speeds would get annoying I think.

1.

The scenario:

I only run SSD's in my systems so I needed a centralized storage system for all my needs:

What is started out with:

I started with a netgear nas that had 2x 2TB in JBOD so I had 4TB worth of data.

but that filled up very quickly so I expanded with a 4TB LG nas to get a total of 8TB.

But that again didn't take long to fill up so I got a antec rack case and put a phenom II in it with a highpoint RR 2680 and 8x 2TB.

But, you guessed it, I ran out of storage again so I got this:

The current solution:

CASE: Norcotek RPC4220

PSU: Corsair HX850

MB: Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3

CPU: AMD Phenom II 965

HS: Stock AMD heatsink

RAM: 16GB DDR3 1333

RAID CARD 1: IBM M1015, Flashed with "IT" firmware

RAID CARD 2: HPT Rocket Raid 2680

SSD: Crucial C300 120GB SSD

HDD 1: 8x 2TB Seagete ST2000DM001

HDD 2: 5x 2TB Hitachi HDS5C3020ALA632

HDD 3: 2x 2TB Seagate ST32000542AS

HDD 4: 1x 4TB Seagete ST4000DM000

HDD 5: 1x 1TB WD 10EACS

Software and Configuration:

My server is running windows server 2012 and im using FlexRAID to make my array.

My main array consists of 14 2TB drives in RAID 6, so i in up with 21.8TB actual space on that array.

The remaining drives are used as iSCSI target's and one 2TB drive is for active torrents and usenet download's /uploads.

All my drives are Seagate because they where the cheapest drives at that time that worked well in a RAID environment.

Usage:

I mainly use the storage for movies and series, I have media players around the house that access it.

Its also for backing up my computers and like I said before there are also iSCSI targets so I have more then just a SSD for my systems.

I currently have a 120GB OCZ vertex boot drive and a 2TB red drive (re purposed from another machine), 2TB black drive. I run this because it was all i could afford before i get a chance to build a NAS or home server.

I have a 1TB WD internal harddrive.  I also have a 1.5TB external. I used to have 200GB internal for my windows config but since I started recording videos I needed a bigger HD, and now I realize I need an even bigger one!

But I run my internal for video making and games, it is barely enough space.

Hi Linus,

I use two 750gb WD RE3 hard drives in raid 0. I am mostly a gamer so this works well for me. I didn't have the money to buy a solid state drive and then another hard drive to store all my games. This was the most cost efficient way to get the most performance and space out of my money.

Currently using a 60GB Kingston V300 SSD as an OS drive and a WD Green 1.5TB drive for storage etc.The SSD was a freebie and the HDD was bought for $60 from NCIX a few yrs ago. Windows boots quickly and the hard drive stores my music, movies, pics, and apps.

I have 1x 120GB Samsung 840, 1x 500GB Seagate Barracuda and an external 320GB Maxtor for some back-ups. With this I'd certainly set up the NAS or home server I've long considered and step my game up with pretty much everything I do on PC, such as my amateur video/photo work, game modding, music collection, perhaps beyond...

Thanks for this and so much more, Linus.

In my server I'm running an 8GB Patriot Xporter XT USB flash drive to boot VMware from and 4 x WD5000BPKT (500GB black edition) 2.5" SATA drives in RAID5 for data storage. Thing is, 2 of them just failed on me and I had to restore from backups, so I would absolutely love to be able to replace them with WD Red drives which are better suited to this task. I just went with these because that's what I had at the time, I wanted low power consumption, and I had a nifty little rack that holds 4 x 2.5" drives in a single 5.25" drive bay, so it made them easy to swap out in case of issues.

My backup PC has a 60GB OCZ SSD to boot up from and a couple of WD 2TB Green drives for backup storage.

My main PC has 2 x Samsung 840 series 250GB drives in RAID0 for speed and a couple of WD 2TB black edition drives as data storage.

My laptop runs a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD.

Here's hoping for a win. If not, good luck to everyone else as well.

Joe.
