WD Red 4TB GIVEAWAY!

1) I'm using my laptop hdd for os and other programs and 750Gb Seagate external drive form my storage.. i used up that drive a long time ago and could use some more drives :)) soon i'll begin building a desktop PC, and i hope i'll be able to put one SSD for OS and at least 2 or 3 WD RED for storage :)

I have a single 500gb seagate drive, as my main boot drive and data drive, it's bad I know, but when I built my computer, it was my backup drive. I bought myself a nice shiny 256Gb Crucial M4, and it worked wonderfully, right up until the day that it just stopped. One that day I swore, I cursed, and I installed windows onto the primary partition of my old, slow, but reliable mechanical drive. The SSD was replaced under warranty (it was only 6 weeks old after all), and I reinstalled windows again, a week passes, and I wake up one morning to another dead SSD. So, yet again I had to reinstall windows to the old seagate drive. Call me paranoid, call me crazy, but in the last year, I've had 3 SSD's, two from Crucial, and one from OCZ, and I've had nothing but problems with them. So for now, I'm going to stick to older, slower, but so much more reliable mechanical drives.. I hope in future to increase my storage space, with a large steam collection and everything else, 500gb doesn't really go very far, but for now, it's all I can afford to have.

Have 1x 120GB 830 Samsung SSD as boot drive, 1x 80GB HDD Seagate 7200rpm for game(s) and 1x 1TB Seagate MyPassport. The SSD because I only have a choice between 1TB HDD or that at the time, so I took SSD for the speed(used to the boot speed of MBAs), reliability and got it cheap. The 80GB HDD was pulled from an old computer my brother build years ago. Needed the MyPassport(got it during a sale too) for backups and projects. Got the paranoia of my HDD breaking randomly since the death of my another WD Elements. xD

Running the os on intel 320 ssd just because its ssd, for grant storage I have seagate 2tb drive because it was on sale and also I have thrown in my old 320gb drive for random stuff.

My current setup is a 60GB Intel 330 Series SSD, 3TB Seagate, 1.5TB Western Digital (pulled from WD external). I have a massive media collection, totaling about 2.5TB, which makes it hard to have room for anything else. What I am most worried about is losing all of that hard work when my poor old drives die, since I also use this as a server for streaming all kinds of things across the local network. I would like to have room to keep pictures safe and install all my Steam games, plus I do a lot of video related work so I have a tiny partition set just for that.

Setup: I have 1 Crucial M4 SSD for boot drive, which I bought since SSD is the way to go nowadays for OS, and also because it was on a massive sale. For storage, I have 1TB Seagate Barracuda + 500GB WD Blue drive. I got these from someone who had extra drives lying around, so I don't really have a good reasoning for using them. Space on my storage is running out, and I'm currently looking for higher capacity drives to replace (or add to) the existing drives. This giveaway might be the solution =)

I am running a 1 TB Seagate Barracuda and also another 320GB Seagate HDD which I use for music and videos. 

Honestly, the reason I went with the Barracuda was because I was pretty disappointing with the WD Black drive in my old PC, it was VERY loud, pretty much the loudest thing in my computer! I sold it when I built my current computer and got the Barracuda instead.

I decided to get the 1TB model because I did not think that I would ever need more space, but now I think I will need to get a bigger hard drive soon! 

The 320GB drive I have is from an old laptop that I had. I don't feel to safe keeping my movies and music on it because it is quiet old, but I don't have any other options :(

Also no SSD sadly, but with the boot times of windows 8, I'm pretty happy!

600 GB laptop drive, in my laptop! Use this because well... im to cheap to buy an SSD big enough and its all that will fit!

I use my ssd's for speedy map rotations in Battlefield 3 and Velociraptor for fast video storage of videos while playing games. They were also recommended by friends and family.

 

This is my storage and could use more for movies and games.

I currently use a 500GB Seagate Hybrid because I have a handy 2.5" hotswap bay in the front of my case that I use for my scheduled backups of my Boot and Work Partitions and then have a Datacenter PC with 3 3TB WD Red in Raid 5 for my Media Storage and backups of my backups that I manage manually. 

 

But in the future for off site storage Raspberry Pi's using 4TB Red's setup in friends/Families homes linked by the Torrent Network for data synchronization.

Run 2 external WD Elements 2 TB each, 1 WD Elements 3 TB, One internal WD 2 TB Green, and a WD 1 TB  Caviar Black (C:). All are JBOD. Scary I know. Four Reds would be perfect for a new RAID 5 server. :)

 

By the way...I have yet to have a drive failure on any WD drive. Elements have worked flawlessly for a couple of years now.

Well ive 2 HDD's and two SSD's ( small storage ). Im running out of space soon, recording gameplay and backups take a lot of space so ill defo need some new HDD soon, the SSDs are great for fast access but i cant store my 126GB gameplay on that, so yeah

I have a 128GB HyperX 3k as a OS/important software drive because it had good performance for the price and my older 64GB Crucial M4 SSD was beginning to feel cramped. I also have a 1TB Seagate that I ripped out of an external enclosure and have kept in my desktop as a data drive ever since. I got that one as an external for backup purposes because I was out and about a lot with my laptop and didn't want to lose anything important if I did lose my laptop. When I built my desktop as an upgrade I used the drive as a boot until I got my first SSD and it then became the data drive. I would never have thought it but now I'm chomping at the bit for an even bigger drive.

 

While I share videos from linustech whenever I can, I don't think anyone I'm not already telling watches my facebook and my twitter is literally only to watch linus. So... meh.

Old, but still primary storage: 4x1TB WD Green drives in Drobo box (through FW800). Obvious choice at a time (got on eBay preconfigured/used). Needs an upgrade/expansion and I can't trust it anymore without warranty (expired) so in a test environment (primary for backing up most valuable info from Drobo +NAS) installed FreeNAS with 2x500GB Seagate drives (mirror; had them after PSU broke on my 2bay RAID enclosure;Seagate seemed pretty good choice back then (reliability/capacity/brand). If my money - looking for 3x3TB WD Red (ZFS for a true reliability) hopefully running on a server grade components (MB/RAM/CPU/LAN).

 

Apparently got rid of an old impression for WD as being manufacturer of drives (Caviar I think) which become quite noisy pretty fast (around 199x-ies). WD Green drives helped seems :)

I run a SSD and two 500GB HDD. I run the SSD as a boot drive for speed, and the other two for storage/backup. I do this because I had one from a laptop that died, and another from a previous desktop I owned.

I have a 120GB Corsair Neutron GTX as my windows boot drive which I bought as an upgrade from the OCZ Vertex 2 60GB that I have (which I  never trusted since the first one I had died and had to be RMA'd, seemed to be a huge issue with OCZ's sandforce based drives at that time). I still have the OCZ SSD in this PC and I run OS X from it (hackintosh).

 

Games and Programs that don't benefit from SSD + my data are on a 1TB Hitachi Deskstar which I actually ripped out from inside a Hitachi external (this is the second time I have pulled apart an external to get a hard drive for a PC lol) this drive is getting rather full now though!

 

Then I have a 640GB WD caviar blue for backups which I pulled from an old HP desktop (this drive reports 24,304 hours powered on time as of this post), this is where my problem lies, my other drives are getting full and the backups drive is too small to have sufficient backups of my data (which scares me).

 

The SSD's are the only drives I have spent money on, the storage is just slapped together from anything I can get together and I don't trust my backups practices due to a lack of space.

I needed a centralized place to store my data because having to have and manage storage space on every computer in the house is not viable.

I needed to have a "storage warehouse", a place that could store my data with safely with redundancy and with room to grow, so I bought a 5 bay NAS from Synology.

 

At the time there were no 4TB drives so I bought a couple of 3TB drives and put them in RAID1 to start with.

I really like WD drives, I have them in my desktop, however at the time I bought my NAS, WD was saying that they didn't support RAID arrays on consumer level drives, and at that time I was also building a desktop for my sister and one of the WD drives would randomly drop from the RAID1 array during boot, so obviously I didn't buy WD drives for my NAS at the time.

 

Regardless, buying a NAS was the best thing I could have done, I have all important data on my NAS, I do "regular" backups of my desktop and laptops to it, the NAS is my private server, video steraming, picture sharing, FTP server, ... you name it the NAS can do it.

 

However with today's file sizes constantly increasing, there is a need for more and more storage, those 4TB drives would really help my storage needs for the next years, and if they are RAID optimized drives even better :)

I run two 250 gb harddrives, no RAID, nothing fancy. OS and programs on one and games and movies on the other. Why you may ask? Well, that's how it was configured when my dad gave it to me, and to be honest i think it would be a waste of money upgrading the storage in a 8 year old machine. Especially when i watch all my movies on netflix and listen to music with spotify and i'm building a entirely new machine soon.

I have a 120gb sandisk ssd boot drive, which i think is plenty space for a boot drive plus a couple of my favorite games. My second drive is a 1tb Western Digital Caviar Green, because i like the silence of it, and i didn't need something super fast for just a storage drive for games, like a black. But it'd be great to have one! If I won I'd probably give one HD to my girlfriend for if we can ever afford to get her a rig.

I run a 5 drive Flexraid with about 7TB of storage (which is already almost full again :( ). Because I have big static media files it was a better choice for me than a RAID5 as it's safer, easier to set up and you can use your old drives all while keeping the data on those drives. Thanks again looney who helped me out with a few questions I had.

I also do a weekly backup of my boot-SSD to the Flexraid and an external drive.

  • I have a couple Cavalry 1TB and 2TB external drives that I use occasionally for backups over e-sata. I chose e-sata drives back in the day because that's given you USB3 speeds ever since 2006. I like to keep some of my storage mobile, which protects against the house burning down so you can have a decent disaster recovery plan. It's also sometimes convenient to take these drives to a friend's house/lan party, etc. My buddies were always having issues with extremely low transfer rates over their USB2 drives. I never have or will trust any cloud backups -- I think the cloud is a gimmick and is highly vulnerable to spying by cloud employees.

     

  • 2 1TB Hitache Deskstar drives in software raid1 in my current build. This is my primary system storage and raid1 ensures against a single drive failure. Despite the "deathstar" name these drives have been colloquially assigned by many people, I've had 0 issues with these drives or the raid since I first bought them in 2008.

     

  • For the OS drive, I did have a first-gen OZC Vertex 60GB ssd (for speed and was still quite expensive back in 2009), but that died after 2 years (aka, the warranty period) so I've been running on a spare 500GB Samsung mechanical drive from 2007 as the OS volume (because I needed an OS drive.) I can definitely feel the burn of sata II speeds...never buying any of OCZ's products ever again though.

1. I currently have a 2TB HDD (forgot what brand) that I use because when I had a laptop, I needed more media space and decided to buy a high capacity HDD and a dock instead of an external encased HDD. So when I built my desktop, I can use it as my boot/storage disk. Which it is in now. Which I am using to type this message with. Not literally using the drive to type on the keyboard, but I mean make it possible to type this message... You get the idea...
