All I know is that my sister gets creeped on at a hugely unacceptable rate when she plays games online because she's a girl. The closest I've experienced is people messaging me out of the blue asking if I'm a girl because I play a girl in an mmo. If I say yes they continue to message and get real creepy real fast. It's literally never happened when playing a male character.

If that's not sexism among gamers I don't know what is.

It still happens but it's super duper rare!  I play warface(Laugh all you want) and my clan is full of females!  Almost no one on warface calls someone out for being a girl.  And if they taunt you for being a girl it's because their afraid of their ego being hurt by being beat by a girl so take it as a compliment for christs sake!  Also you don't know what sexism is.

In story driven games you're not supposed to identify as the character. That's the whole point of story-driven games. It's a protagonist, with a fixed story that only makes sense within certain boundaries and fixed characters.

 

It makes no sense making it a female character if it was supposed to be a story about a man. And a female player could just as easily idenfity with (not as) that character as a male would. Just like the opposite is true. Every man could identify with Jade, or Zoë or Samus or Lara Croft.
