Sexisim and reform among gamers.

mbryant

My view on that is if you let the player customize the character then yes add female as an option, if the game has a stringent character (like Geralt in witcher games) don't bother adding customization and pick whichever you originally had planned for regardless, since the character drives the plot.

I agree with this completely.

if the developer wants their lead protagonist to be a mysoginistic asshole (GTA 5) they should be free to do so.

I think some people get confused about this too.

When a character is intended to be a terrible person *cough* Trevor *cough* but people can't make the distinction between a misogynistic character and a misogynistic developer.

Well when those morons added 3 protagonists why was not 1 female? Or even better they could have had 4... :P

Not gonna lie a 4th character would be cool, but i like the dynamic between Trevor, Franklin, and Michael.

When GTA does come up with a female main protagonist i don't think ANY GTA fan will have a problem with it so long as they also get in violent and wacky situations as other protagonists in other GTA games.

To write good female characters is simple; just write them the same way you would a male character, there doesn't need to be much different.

The only thing i think people would get salty about is if devs were legitimately pandering but if the devs were to actually create a cool protagonist who happens to be female from the get-go then all would be good.

Yes I would expect that from people that blame others for their shitty existance. Because otherwise you'd have to take a good look at yourself.

You still haven't answered the question though, why should writers be obligated to pander to you. You think you are more important/special than whatever the writer wants to create?

Well if they do not market the game for women they clearly do not want my money which means I am free to pirate it! :D

Yes you are right but sadly I hated two of the three only Franklin was even close to likable... :(

And thats also true the only way to make a female good in a game like this is to make her a bit more like a guy personality wise also when the person is someone who is rob banks then yes I kinda expect a female character with short hair and some muscles! ;)

Really? I loved Trevor and Michael.

It's funny because of their different personalities i'd play them all quite differently.

No you don't have to make a female character a guy, they can be as masculine and feminine as they're written but they shouldn't be treated any different from previous protagonists. For instance, just like it doesn't have to be a female protagonist it doesn't have to be a masculine female protagonist.

You could have a super feminine, dress-wearing, very petite, constantly cursing, psychopath who robs banks. (so maybe even a female Trevor-like aggressive personality)

Or a small and cute Asian granny who's robbing banks for her grandchildren's college fund because she's dying soon and wants to leave them a financial safety net (Any story would work so long as it makes sense or has a purpose)

The power of guns, explosives, and aggressive unpredictability makes anyone intimidating.

The people who say that girls don't have a tendency towards video games seem to forget that a shit ton of games for the Atari consoles were primarily developed by women. It was only because after the great game depression, the NES was marketed in America primarily towards boys. That's a trend that the US gaming industry perpetuated until the present day.

Unfortunately that trickled down into PC gaming when that rose alongside the pile of smouldering ashes that is the consoles. The only reason that the PC community is considered sexist or obstructive of girls in the community is because Nintendo of America skewed their marketing such that to play video games was considered "unfeminine" or "not an acceptable pastime for a girl". Whereas Nintendo-kabushiki-gaisha in Japan marketed to as many people as it could. Which is kind of ironic.

i asked a question. care to answer?

or you just gonna throw more insults around?

No you didn't. You were projecting under the false assumption you weren't. And thus asked the "question" under false pretences.

It is actually you who lacks the self-insight, dunning-kruger and all. Like lacking the self insight to not see how foollish it is to compare being shot in the face to being called names on the internet. As if somehow that is even remotely the same fucking thing. If you're going to make such ridiculous statements, i'm not interested in arguing. Not until you aknowledge how retarded that was.

And let me tell you something else, being offended is a choice. Not a given. I can call you a pretentious dickhead, but it's your choice whether you're insulted by this or not. You can just simply ignore that statement and move on.

You know, you can kind of blame Atari for the way things are. Atari causes game market to crash>Nintendo has to sell the NES as a toy>has to choose between aiming it at boys or girls>aims it at boys>Gaming seen as a thing for boys.

"We also blind small animals with cosmetics.
We do not sell cosmetics. We just blind animals."

Pathetic excuse for "harassment." She walked around in a city full of douchebags for 10 hours, and you're surprised that some people cat called her? Are you serious? People telling a hot woman she's hot, you'd better call the police! Street harassment! Freaks are being freaks on the street, so this is the entirety of society all in one video! I hate it when people link videos like these and are serious about it. What a joke. Go walk down the street in somewhere other than the New York slums and tell me how many guys call you out.

Those do not look like the slums at all.
Also see this video for another alternative where it's definitely not in a "slum"
Or this one in the UK where it's a giant shopping mall and she  gets followed round and potentially videoed.

Or even this one where she gets comments for her life style choices, again not a slum.

Or how about this one if you're kinda wanting to go a little further than western society.

I think you've no idea what a slum actually looks like if you think any of these videos took place in a slum, unless you're stating that central NYC is a slum?

Also lets point out that I was making an example of the video of unwanted attention, would you like it if a complete stranger tells you you're ugly? It'd be weird right? Same thing applies to telling you that you're hot. When walking on a street or doing something that is not a social event I.e. not at a bar, not at a party etc you don't want to interact with people, again you've also focused on a minute point as I have stated several times that it is a minority ruining it for the majority.

The thing I hate about discussions like these is that the people inside the discussion typically agree on all the major points, but the people who actually need to be address who are attacking women aren't here because they are typically not part of the actual online community; they're individuals outside of our particular discussion-sphere, if you will, who don't see it as a big deal because they don't see what they're doing as they do it.  I mean really, who here would actually say that verbally abusing women just because they're playing the same games is ok?

I guess in short, I find these discussions kind of pointless unless you try to bring in the people who are actually perpetuating the thing we all can say shouldn't be happening.

You're not wrong.

What about the males who get crap for being young or males who get crap for being Slovakian or males who get crap for...

There will  ALWAYS be a reason  for giving someone crap.  If it was not allowed (not illegal) to chide someone for being female or being crap or being Slovakian, then people would chatsise them because their game name was too long or somesuch

No offence but I'd appreciate it if you read the whole thread before replying as you'd see that I actually addressed the very thing you stated here.

Crap, I guess this kinda thing happens really, really often since there's already 5 videos about it! Let me ask you, how much of a problem is it for you? How many times have you been followed, commented on your life style (what even?) or your looks commented on in the city? I would like to know, so I can see how absolutely often it happens. You know, since there's 5 videos on it. Crazy amount for 7 billion people, I know.

I used to be quite active here.

Humanity is doomed if people think certain words/phrases should be censored.

Ever heard of "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? You people make a fuss over cat calls and being called bad words. Boohoo.

When in London my own it happens a fair amount, i'd say 3-4 times in an hour with random men trying to interact with me, not the ones that hand out leaflets either and I will reiterate my main point for you again, very clearly. The minority ruin it for the majority.

Sorry, you get interacted with in public. It must be horrifying, being talked to by people. I have to admit, I haven't seen my friends complain about being talked to, especially 3-4 times an hour (since, you know, I guess you're walking around outside 24/7 in London to be interacted with that often.) Asking my mother, she says in her 42 years she hasn't had any kind of problem with being "harassed" in public. Again, maybe I'm just in a nice place, but if it's really such a problem then you think people would actually care. I don't know any majority that are complaining, other than the feminazis on YouTube, and you.

I used to be quite active here.

I think you're missing the point completely of what I'm trying to get across and are intentionally being ignorant on the subject, so I won't reply to you anymore on here because it adds useless posts to this discussion, however feel free to PM me to continue this.
