Have you tried reinstalling onto your flash drive? Your bootable usb might have installed incorrectly.

My brother is planning on using ubuntu 14.04.3 on his pc. Anyway so I'm booting it from a usb and I press install ubuntu, it does its thing and then it gets to the home screen (the purple background and whatnot) and then it just goes to an orange screen and gets stuck there. Any help would be appreciated

Installation probably fucked up, happened to me a couple times. Just try to install again

Have you tried reinstalling onto your flash drive? Your bootable usb might have installed incorrectly.
