According to Palmer Lucky, Your crappy PC is the biggest barrier to VR adoption

Qub3d

No. The biggest barrier is that most people (me included) have no option to try VR in their location or anywhere close.

Then it is price for the "not crappy PC" and the VR itself.

My PC can't handle VR but it is just because of my 770.

I would jump on the VR bandwagon if I could try it first at least. I have no idea how good \ bad it is.

This is a good point, and I have had the chance of trying the DK2, and at that point of the development it wasn't the best experience. I tried heaps of different demos, but since the CV1 and specially since it has hand controllers the experience should be a lot better.

Well he's not wrong... But we're limited by what Intel, Nvidia and AMD are releasing. If they are refusing to release anything that's more than "10% better" (if that), we can't exactly have super high end PCs. As it is, it will take at least 5 more years before VR can run on most hardware and not just the Super High End, most expensive hardware.

Intel isn't so much at fault, most of their older series CPUs should be easily able to run it. Even going back as far as the higher end in the 3000 series (even though the min specs say 4000 series). AMD's CPUs not so much.

Personally I wouldn't call the GTX 970 a "Super High End" GPU, but you may be in a situation where it is. Also I'm pretty sure the average GPU (dedicated) over all computers is like around a mid GTX 500 series one. So it may take longer than 5 years, specially if the min requirements keep moving upwards, which will probably happen.

It does NOT fulfill a similar role to a high end monitor. Not even close. It is something you have to buy in addition to a monitor because the Oculus Rift will only work with a handful of games for now, and nothing else. The monitor will work with everything.

The monitor is a basic requirement to have a working computer. The Oculus Rift is an optional extra which makes a few games more fun. Completely different categories.

no a cheap lcd from korea for a 100 bucks is a requirement, a high end monitor is a luxury item like the OR

So whats his main rig then? A Mac pro?

He says that it's the same as the recommended specs of the Oculus Rift. Though apparently he has a beast at his office running at some like -42 degrees.

My PC can handle 4k (not even joking. I'm still shocked) to some extent yet it doesn't (or at least shouldn't) support VR. This is ridiculous.

Not fully but it's how it is meant to feel to the user. Hopefully the tech keeps pushing for huge advances and not to far in the future it will be closer to that.

But will always have something on your head. Unless a full room projector vr project starts up.

Yeah hopefully it succeds. I dont really mind anything on my head as long as its small and wont strain my neck or cause irritation from prolonged use. Though the price should be lower because it cant really perform all that a standard monitor can do.

However with that being said early adopters of tech always pay a high price.

I own a 2200 USD PC.

I'm not about to spend a third of that on a headset for VR.

Yeah I get you, I could run vr but £500 is to much. If it was £250-300 I would consider it for Elite Dangerous. But even then I'd want to try it out for a good few hours before I pulled the trigger, I'm not entirely convinced I'd get on with it, I'm not overly prone to motion sickness but I wouldn't want a 500 quid puke machine. Also comfort is a factor.

I think the biggest barrier to VR is the price, even though for new tech I don't think its overpriced, but that is the general perception so far. Oculus is coming in at the price of most peoples PC's, and the HTC/Steam thing is coming in at the cost of peoples dream PC's, but that's just the cost of new tech. I remember my first 1080p monitor in what seems like forever ago, not only was it small(22"), but it cost just over $600, but of course times have changed and now you could do a multimonitor setup for the same price(with much better panels). The cost of technology always decreases though, so I imagine VR being viable to most people within a few years.

The next barrier I see is fragmentation, I hope this is kept down to a minimum...

You know, I just thought about this after posting this, but I really hope that software isn't a barrier for VR. It would suck to buy a VR device to only have "a few" of games/software that supports it.

The culprits are console devtards who drag videogaming experience down and dont push system requirements, also throw nvidia and microsoft on the shit pile just because you can.

Where is the modern 2016 Crysis 10 version that wrecks my system without 4x R9 Fury-X? there is no more of that i have a 4 year old gtx 6702GB and instead everything is playable.

Also 600$ for VR dont make me laugh.Someone who has 600$ for it definately can afford a 400$+ videocard dont you think.

yes, your fov is engulfed in virtual world (mostly, fov is around 100+ horizontal but definitely enough)  with real depth like the real world

that image is 100% accurate imo, i tried to fall asleep under a tree in Windlands in the DK2 but the headset was too uncomfortable lol

I see that should also take care or your pheripheral vision I guess? That is where 3D vision fails because there are no curved ultrawides with NV 3D. Anyways I dont blame you for failing to fall asleep. Even I would be hard pressed to sleep with that kind of scuba gear on.

As for price $300-400 and I'll bite, $500 I'll think about it, $600? Well thank you come again.....

Well duh, if everyone could run it it would probably sell a few more units. That said most people who are interested in adopting it early and have the money to afford it most likely already have at least the minimum setup. My system has been vr capable for almost 2 years now (even though the compatibility checker thinks my cpu isn't enough - bs, especially overclocked) but I'm not going to buy one. What's currently limiting adoption is the high price tag on the unit itself, there's no way around it. Justified or not, I know a guy who bought an r9 fury specifically to run vr but then gave up when he found out it would have cost him half his salary.

The barrier for entry is not that high, an r9 390 is not that expensive for someone who can afford to spend 600$ on a vr peripheral, It gets even cheaper if you go in the used market. If anyone was expecting to be able to run it with a gtx 960 and their i3 prebuilt, well they were deluding themselves to begin with. I don't see anyone trying to play games at 4k on a 750ti.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

The hype is that it's freaking amazing.

Like, get lost just painting pictures in 3D space on the Vive for HOURS amazing..

It won't die, it's not pointless.

It's just expensive right now.

All I know is that I had an Oculus for 1 week and even when sitting down to play single player games that did support the thing I ended up not using it because it's uncomfortable and a hassle, and not that much more immersive or interesting than my bog-standard monitor.

VR could become great if there was a whole truckload of content made especially for it. But I would still do 95% of my gaming on a monitor, so the headset needs to cost 5% of my monitor to make sense.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
