Yeah... That statement does not really help your case, Palmer.

By making it more expensive, you kind of stray away the people who will buy a VR headset thinking it will run on their shitbooks and then later complain that it doesn't work. If anything, the cost of owning a high end computer needs to be significantly cheaper.

That's about the same we would pay for a 3440x1440 ultrawide, with roughly the same requirements to run at decent FPS.

Thank you. I don't see a single point in it. Maybe some games may be cool with it but it's crap for productivity, it's crap for competetive gaming, crap for everything than maybe 1-2 games.

I think the biggest barrier to VR is the price, even though for new tech I don't think its overpriced, but that is the general perception so far. Oculus is coming in at the price of most peoples PC's, and the HTC/Steam thing is coming in at the cost of peoples dream PC's, but that's just the cost of new tech. I remember my first 1080p monitor in what seems like forever ago, not only was it small(22"), but it cost just over $600, but of course times have changed and now you could do a multimonitor setup for the same price(with much better panels). The cost of technology always decreases though, so I imagine VR being viable to most people within a few years.

 

 

The next barrier I see is fragmentation, I hope this is kept down to a minimum...

Some of you youngins weren't old enough the last time we went through the VR rodeo, so you don't really understand.

 

VR was a big deal. HUUUGE. But it fucking sucked hard, there wasn't a single product you could buy that worked well enough. People said "meh" and investors lost millions. So what do we do now? The hype train has not only gained steam, but it's gotten bigger as well, since the general public is more tech savvy this time around. If the first handful of products don't make people go "holy shit this is fucking awesome!" then it's going to fail again, and the investors get the shaft, again. Only this time BILLIONS of dollars are at stake.

 

"So what?" you say. Well, Oculus is automatically the authority on VR (for now), because they started the hype train to begin with this time around. They have to lead by example, they know they have to come in at a price that average people can afford, but they can't go bankrupt either. The "it has to be awesome" requirement is what made it take so long from them to release it, so who knows how much they have spent on R&D at this point, but the good news is, that the more units sold will drive the price down as the books go into the black.

 

"But Sony and Microsoft lose money on their consoles, why can't Oculus do the same thing for the Rift?" Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo get a cut of every game you buy. End of story. Unless Oculus starts charging money for the SDK or something (which would be library suicide) then they can't make money back on the hardware. A smart thing for them to do would be to start making their own games, or, just pull a Microsoft, buy Bungie, and make Halo an Xbox exclusive. 

 

So quit your bitching, early adopters always pay the highest price. Just be happy that it's under a grand in the US. If you want a Titan X, just wait 4 years and buy 2150 Ti and spend 1/10th the price.

It is a littler different as you get this weird feeling when playing it. Since your whole vision is just game. If they could integrate it to nerves so it feels like you are actually touching things it would be the future like tomorrow fast

What I'm concerned about is what other things VR can help improve aside from leisure stuff. Doing stuff in VR for work is absurd and you'll need to have better input devices like tactile feedback and actual use of your hands to do stuff rather than relying on a keyboard/controller. Websites won't benefit much about VR too as you're just reading articles/forums unless it's some video you're watching that supports VR.

 

It is cool and really amazing right now, but without any practical reasons to get VR for work or for what majority of people do with their PCs, it will take years before it becomes mainstream.

The reason why VR has such a high PC requirement is to eliminate this.  Motion sickness will not exist if latency and high frame rates are achieved constantly, therefore the very high PC spec minimum.  Oculus wants to do it right, cos if it doesn't it risks ending up like 3D TVs.

It does NOT fulfill a similar role to a high end monitor. Not even close. It is something you have to buy in addition to a monitor because the Oculus Rift will only work with a handful of games for now, and nothing else. The monitor will work with everything.

The monitor is a basic requirement to have a working computer. The Oculus Rift is an optional extra which makes a few games more fun. Completely different categories.
