[FINISHED!] [Thanks for 5k!] A budget build with custom cable management: Project [BBB], The Badass Bargain Build!

Welcome to my build log,

My mother needs a new pc, for around 200 EUR (264.16 USD or 278.19 CAD). It will be used for light office tasks and printing. So it needs to be compact, silent and it needs to feel fast. I posted a topic about this earlier today to see everyones opinion about making this into a build log. And surprise surprise, people actually want to see this :3

As this is a kind of a fun project for me I'm not just going to throw it together. I'm planning on some nice cable management (no sleeving, sorry) and overal clean look and colour scheme. I also want to modify and theme the windows 7 that's its going to run, I might also put ubuntu on there it all depends on what you guys say and what my mother wants!

So let's get started with all the parts i just ordered:

Cpu: AMD A4-3400 boxed ~ 37.20 EUR (49.13 USD)

Motherboard: ASRock A75M-HVS ~ 46.55 EUR (61.48 USD)

RAM: Corsair Value Select 4 GB ddr3-1600 single module ~ 32.90 EUR (43.45 USD)

Case: Fractal Design Core 1000 ~ 27.90 EUR (36.85 USD)

Storage: Adata S511 60 GB SSD ~ 54.95 EUR (72.58 USD)

total price: 200.40 EUR (264.69 USD)

I know this is excludes the power supply, but I'm most probably going to buy this at our local computer store when i get back from the university camping trip.

As the PSU will be non-modulair it will have a lot of unused cables (I only need three cables, two for the motherboard and one for the SSD). So i got the idea to build a "cable box", Which is basically an extension for the PSU where all the cables will be in and only the three cables I'll use will come out of it. I might also make a little one for the front side panel connectors ;)

For the cables coming out of the "cable box" i want to make some cable "leaders" that will keep the cables in place (kinda like the ones you can use for electrical cables in house)

I'm not sure what colour I'm going to give these boxes and leaders, but I'm thinking of black with blue and white accents to match the motherboard.

Because my uni starts tomorrow, I'll start making this build within the next 7 days and hope to finish it within a month!

Feel free to leave questions and suggestions on this topic! :)

-EDIT- Final update is on page 3

ps I've had my reasons to go with the a4 instead of a celeron, don't judge me

Looks good, the only thing I would change is storage, but that's because 60 GB is kinda small for me. However, I understand that it would increase the price as well.

My mother literary stores nothing on the pc itself, all that needs to be on it is some programs and windows. All her photos and documents are stored on an external 500 GB harddrive with usb 3.0 :D The funny thing is I don't even have a SSD in my own rig /lazy

Alright, so i came back from my university camp and to my joyous surprise all the parts had arrived! I'm going to build a test bench to check if all the parts are working and to see how fast it is in windows 7 x64. Photos and more info will follow later today!

Windows 7 x64 installed and booted succesfully!

So all the parts are working and there are no issues so far in booting. I even took the time to see how long it boots. I did 10 tests and the longest boot time is 21.3 secs where the shortest was 17.4 secs. The average boot time is 19.7 seconds, which to me is an awesome result for this cheap system!

Now that everything is working correctly and the performance is as wanted, I can go on to build the actual system. Sadly i wont have time the next two days due to university, but in the weekend I'll be sure to fill this log up to the rim!

Can't wait to get building and give you guys the next update on saturday ;)

Good money management! But it's a bit of a sketchy PSU. Also, my WD black boots faster than that SSD. Does that mobo have 6 gb/s SATA on there? if it does make sure it is plugged into one of those

Thanks! Well the PSU has 2 years warranty from our local store, so if there are any problems i can just go there :3 And yes tha mobo has 6gb/s SATA, that's why I had to buy a little more expensive motherboard, weird that your WD black boots faster. Maybe its a combo of the caching and the fact that the rest of your system is faster so all the windows files load faster.

Anyway I'm still not sure wether to put windows 7 on there or Ubuntu, any suggestions?

I would say windows 8 because it is probably easier to navigate but I have never used Ubuntu so don't quote me on that :P

Alright folks, it's weekend so it's build log time again!

Today I've started with putting in the power supply and SSD and removing the HDD rack:

post-38040-0-26438100-1378555515_thumb.j

post-38040-0-07806600-1378555395_thumb.j

The SSD nicely in place

I also put in the I/O shield to see how it matches the back of the case:

post-38040-0-32651800-1378555350_thumb.j

As you can see the metalic look doesn't quite match the gray/silver look of the PSU and the white look of the PCI brackets, so I've decided to spray paint the shield in white, this will be done (hopefully) today or tomorrow!

After this I started to take some measurements:

post-38040-0-44673800-1378555332_thumb.j

then I test fitted the motherboard to see how much room is left around it to take some of the last necessary measurements:

post-38040-0-66001700-1378555301_thumb.j

Finally i took all my measurements and made a "list" with dimensions and what parts I've got to get:

post-38040-0-25920600-1378555267_thumb.j

I have also finally come up with the colour scheme I want to use inside and how I'm going to handle all the cables, as this case doesn't have any cable management. For the cables I'm going to make "cable boxes" (as stated before) most probably out of triplex. Then I'm going to lead all the smaller cable through 2 or 3 sets of spray painted tubes. The only 2 cables that won't go through a tube are the SATA  cable as it bends really well and looks nice without tube and the 24-pin connector, which i will spray paint white and might lead with some brackets.

Now off to the hardware store to get some supplies and I hope to update this log either today or tomorrow, stay tuned!

ps sorry for some of the blurry pictures, it's just a phone camera :S

I probably wouldn't have bothered with an SSD and got a CX430M instead, but I'm curious to see how a PC at this price range can perform.

Forgot to mention that my mother hates the sound the harddrive can make, atleast an SSD is quiet and fast :3

Last update for the day guys

I drew out all the cutting lines on the plywood:

post-38040-0-84952600-1378579859_thumb.j

after this I got ready to cut everything out nicely:

post-38040-0-12412600-1378580102_thumb.j

post-38040-0-62551400-1378580115_thumb.j

look at it, so nicely cut (Oh god i need a tripod and a decent camera)

Now the best part of the day... sanding ._.

Before:

post-38040-0-82103100-1378579876_thumb.j

this is why you need to sand plywood after cutting

After:

post-38040-0-33445700-1378579888_thumb.j

smooth as a babys bum

post-38040-0-04477500-1378579903_thumb.j

I also tried bending the tubes (which was 50-50 according to my co-worker) as this was 19 mm and 16 mm is what the bending spring is ment for. So this is what happened:

post-38040-0-23432400-1378579914_thumb.j

Not that pretty, right? I'll go back to the store tomorrow and buy some decent bendable tubes, these were only a 1 or 2 bucks ;)

So I also decided not to spray paint, but to paint everything regularly. When I'm getting new tubes I'll also get some normal blue and white paint to make this thing gorgeous!

I hope to be able to get some more progress tomorrow than just buying some more supplies, but I can't guarantee you that. This week university is really kicking in, but i hope to deliver some more updates by atleast the next weekend!

Stay tuned

~Cheezzzus

Ubuntu is probably the easiest to learn, but another OS that supposedly mimics OSX is ElementaryOS. It's free like Ubuntu, and is even based off of the core, but it's been skinned to look like OSX. If your mom still wants a Windows look, I'd then give Linux Mint a try, as it's probably the closest decent XP-look alike.

what is needed is an os that can run Firefox or chrome and has word or something similar that atleast saved files that word can read. If it boots faster than windows and is easier to use, ill go with that. My mother also really likes OSX so elementaryOS might be a solid option as well! thanks for the extra options :)

Now here's the last update this weekend!

I needed to cut out some more to actually make sure the box stays in place:

post-38040-0-70187000-1378664865_thumb.j

post-38040-0-96988600-1378664879_thumb.j

Afterwards I got myself some new paint and tubing:

post-38040-0-44436700-1378664895_thumb.j

post-38040-0-23510700-1378664910_thumb.j

Thank god this tube bends properly

Now it was time to cut out the holes for the tubing:

post-38040-0-92240300-1378664974_thumb.j

After this I test-fitted the tube and that 24-pin connector:

post-38040-0-98424400-1378664988_thumb.j

It's a perfect fit!

post-38040-0-23060300-1378665006_thumb.j

Finally it was time to paint!

post-38040-0-03834000-1378665021_thumb.j

post-38040-0-90185900-1378665037_thumb.j

The second layer of paint is looking good

Ghetto drying set up for the tube

post-38040-0-45889600-1378665070_thumb.j

Last but not least... a nice close-up of the blue-coloured tube, I think it turned out awesome!

So now it's back to uni for the rest of the week, hope to get to finalizing all the tubing and the painting and maybe even putting the boxes together next weekend! And as always, feel free to leave any suggestions or questions down below ;)

I voted other for Windows 8 (With StartIsBack)

Alright, it's still in consideration thanks for the replay.
