Is A GTX 980 Too Overkill?

AsrielDreemurr
Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

Kai, thx ;3;

I myself wont ever get above a 2K panel either...

Does not stop me using 1440p and 4K on this monitor though in the games that run well, and they look MUCH MUCH sharper as a result, which YOU can do as well, its a Nvidia feature. (AMD has it too)

You don't need a huge resolution screen to use a powerful GPU. The features it includes, has that covered.

Hence why I and probably many others suggest a card slightly better than your needs.

Ayy think I may have gone a bit overkill on my gpu choice... Should I rather get a 970? Or would I benefit from a 980? (Don't want to offend anyone, but please don't recommend a 290, 380, 380x, 390 or 390x. thanks. They may be faster and I may be 'stupid' not to go with them, but I just, plain, don't want to use them. Don't take offence, thank you ;3; And, at the same time, don't recommend a 960 because it would fall behind and a 980 ti is wayy over the top )

Games - (note, these will be recorded at 1080p 60fps on 900p monitors)

- Minecraft (Seus Ultra Shaders + Optifine)

- Blockade

- Terraria

- Geometry Dash

- Dota 2

- Unturned

- Modded Minecraft (up to 210 mods)

- TF 2

- Roblox

Activities:

- 3D Rendering (Blender/Cyberlink/Cinema 4D/AE)

- Designing (Paint.net but that doesn't really matter xD)

If you play Geometry Dash, would you take the time to rate this demon? 14986973 ;3;

The 970 will suit your needs perfectly.

Tbh for 1080p a 980ti isn;t over the top, maybe for your games yes, a 980 isn't suited well for any of these games, but in rendering will be due to da cuda.

Yeh tru, but besides rendering, the 980 ti would be under-used. and why would the 980 be suited for the games?

390/980

But..

970 isn't a slouch either, but slightly less vram limits (Even tho both say 4gb cards, the 970 is slower past 3.6GB vram, while I myself not had any issues, more IS better)

The 970 is great, the 980 is better, the 970 can OC up to 980 levels, the 980 can OC as well past that.

NONE of these are overkill for 1080p when you have Nvidia's DSR in the mix (You can force 1440p/4K visuals on your 1080p panel)

Anyone saying the 970/390/390x/980/980Ti is overkill obviously does not use DSR/VSR or Super Sampling that much. Which actually uses the GPU's power if you WANT it to.

Or go the other way, just max out any 1080p game for QUITE some time, even impose a FPS cap near your monitor refresh so it never EVER heats up as much as a fully used card would.

Plenty of benefits, but its up to you and your wallet what YOU find acceptable.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I said the 980 wouldn't be, the games don't require a huge amount of GPU processing, minecraft is mainly cpu, and the others are plain basic to run, hence why I would suggest an R9 380 or 390 but you know, you don't want AMD for some reason ;P

Fair enough, but that argument put you off of AMD cards? Shame man, they're not bad, suited for certain situations, I love my 290X despite its heat, but I could fix that if I wanted to
