NVIDIA and Intel do this as well, they'll throw higher binned chips on cheaper products when there is a supply shortage. It's very likely that some 970s are actually able to be working 980s.

Don't think so, as the 970s are quite literally cut down 980s that didn't make the standard so that they could function.

Not saying it's impossible though, as I don't know exactly how their process works.

it means you can have a chance of getting something better for less

same with the good old Phenom II X4's as well, you could get lucky and be able to unlock two more cores, making it an 1055T (or whatever other Phenom II x6's there were). 

 

I don't remember entirely if you could do it with the x3's too, as this was just before the time when I got really into computers.

AFAIK, AMD only laser cut HD7000, not HD6000 or the R9 series.

It can be done on all fury cards, depends on which shaders have been locked whether you can get them all unlocked.

On mine it looks like i maybe able to unlock 3/4 of the locked shaders, i am not going to bother as its only gains about 5-8% performance.
