Speedtest.net launches HTML5 speed test

Speedtest.net has launched and HTML5 version of their speed test, removing the need to use Flash or any other program installations, both speeding up the test and removing the yet more flash from the internet
 
For about a week now users who launched the site without a Flash plugin (or with Flash blocked) were greeted with a link to an HTML5 beta site. Ookla, LLC the company behind Speedtest.net, appears to be looking into doing away with the rapidly aging platform that is Flash in lieu of the far more lightweight all-in-browser path.

Although it doesn’t have the glitzy look of the Flash test (no map to choose locations from) the simple no-nonsense design of the HTML5 test is more than sufficient to meet the needs to giving a well and proper Internet speed test.

Flash has been on a long road to doom as it has been a bloated, overlarge app platform that runs in browsers and has a long history of security exploits and poor performance. Earlier this year, Mozilla Corporation began blocking Flash in its Firefox browser (a block since relinquished) because of security issues discovered by controversial Italian firm Hacking Team. And that’s only the most recent nail in the coffin for the aging app platform.
 

I wonder how ads are integrated after the shift, ads are still run through flash by most browsers. given the site is run by ads, this would force all the ads to go html5.

Doesn't work for me at the moment lol. Begin test doesn't begin anything. They beta fix it before releasing it lol.

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

 

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

It worked once for me then every other time i click the button it does nothing. I did however find something a little concerning though, it has the history of my speedtests yet i have a dynamic ip and i've had multiple ip's since it even has speedtests from my old isp wtf! (no i don't have an account) I'm probs missing something obvious right now im pretty tired, the only thing i could think of is my MAC address?

Haven't installed Flash in years, the other day my Mum asked my to help her print some things out from a weird website, the site required Flash & Java to print (if you wanted the printer view and not the full site view). I just laughed and told her I'd have to do it from her laptop cause there was no way in hell I was installing either of them onto my PC.

About time they ditch Flash... I kept having to find a HTML5 compatible speed test site all the time because flash either outright fails/I don't want to install it/isn't even available on my device.

Super beta and you need to disable ad block which is annoying...
