hosting servers

Lays

Was wondering about which games you can host servers for, IE: Bf3/ Dayz, but when I try to google stuff about it, I usually get things like "home internets can be difficult because they're less stable/ bandwidth caps etc bla bla)

Well I dont have any caps on my net, 70 down 12+ up, it's 100% stable even when stressed to the max, the only time I dc is if I get ddosed or we don't pay the bill lol.

I know I have the hardware for it, and then some.  But I have no idea where abouts getting the software or whatever I need to host the things. Hopefully you guys know what I can do and point me in the right direction!

I'm not so much concerned with bf3, but I do want to host a dayz server for my friends and I to play on.

Thanks guys.

To my understanding, you can only rent a BF3 server and not make your own. I am probably wrong though. Not sure about DayZ.

I've only had experience trying to run source engine servers, but you have to foward ports on your router first and get some kind of program that will allow you to set up a dedicated server. It's also usually helpful if you can get a server panel, since that is a really useful tool for setting up fastDL servers. I could never get a server panel to work since I was doing it on Linux and I have no idea how to use Linux.

I run a DayZ server, i started at Nitrado but didn't like it. Got lots of desyncs and it was laggy when i got more than 15-20 players. Now i'm running the server on a VPS (3 Intel XEON cores at 2,2GHz, 4GB RAM, 130Mb/s Down, 230Mb/s Up))

The bandwith i use is around 5-6Mb/s up and 4-5Mb/s down when the server has 25-32 players on it. It sends and receives around 800GB of data a month. So from a bandwith point of view i guess you would be able to run a DayZ server on your connection, especially when it's for you and your friends only.

I don't know what kinds of issues you can get with latencies when using a consumer grade connection to set up a gaming server. I guess players would experience a higher ping when connecting to a consumer line compared to a server in a datacenter.
