Supposedly the Home service data cap is 1TB, personally if this was available to me I'd be on the Business service and would not have a cap.

 

1TB is quite a bit, better than Comcrap's 300GB limit, but it's still a limit, which sucks.

Is it 1TB a month?

Is it 1TB a month?

1tb a month with $10 per 50gb over the limit, but from what I understand they rarely enforce that or charge.  Which is odd for them.

Pretty much, except other ISP's collude with each other so there isn't "true" competition.

 

It's very rare that a city takes the initiative to setup their own infrastructure so ISP's usually have contracts with the city saying "we'll build out the infrastructure and provide services, but we own everything we install". I'm not sure what the statistic is, but usually there are only two ISP's you can choose from, sometimes only one, but very rarely do you have more than two options that are actually good, and that doesn't mean that the ISP has to serve the whole city, just the major parts or really wherever they want.

 

For example in my city our options are AT&T, Charter, and although rare, Verizon. At my house I can only choose AT&T or Charter, but not even two blocks away you can choose between AT&T and Verizon, but AT&T doesn't serve U-Verse on that street only DSL even though they can server U-Verse a block away at my house. Then there are parts of the city that AT&T doesn't even touch, only Charter does, and then there's some parts that don't have access to Internet Services at all.

 

And this isn't just my city, it's nearly all cities in the U.S. and I'm pretty sure Australia and Canada suffer from similar issues.

 

There's also a word for this, an oligopoly, this video sums it up pretty well;

 

Our national carrier got into trouble with the Government a number of years ago for being anti-competitive and holding the industry and development of high-speed internet back and the Government forced Telecom to split into Chorus (infrastructure), and Telecom (RSP). 

Basically in NZ there are infrastructure companies that are heavily regulated by our commerce commission on how much they can charge RSP (Retail Service Providers) per user to their copper & fibre infrastructure.... And then there are 10s of large and small RSPs that all provide the internet and VoIP connections. I think the only company that has its own network still is Vodafone who bought the Telstra Clear copper and cable network.

No cities in Utah, lol, not surprised. I think I'm fine waiting until Google Fiber makes its way from Provo up to Salt Lake. It is in the works, can't come fast enough though.

Yeah, completely different than how it is here. Our ISP's have tons of government employees in their pockets.

 

Honestly it's either going to get much worse or much better here soon. I'm really hoping that the big ISP companies get broken up again like Bell did in the 80's. A lot of ISP's are also cable companies, so there's huge conflicts internally since they make a lot of money selling cable, but people are starting to cut the cord and go with only Internet services, so they've been throttling online video services and have been implementing data caps to stop people from watching video entertainment online and force them to get a cable plan to then charge them even more.

 

It's a really messed up system here and it needs to die quick.

Over a year and still waiting for at&t gigapower here, status been "underway" that whole time, while going on the 6th year without any speed increases by the only other semi-reliable Time Warner cable aka spectrum now.. Which I heard they canceled future upgrade plans. 


I need more upload speed to be specific. 5mbps is not even enough to stream a game, hours to upload videos. let alone upload a 24 TB media library to a backup (do the math of how long it would take at 5mbps)
