I want all the wireless I can get in a 1-2km area(a mile)

1991luk

I want to know what do I need for receiving all the wireless network connections.I'm 13 miles away from the nearest city but alot of my friends have wireless routers and I think I want to setup a slick wireless connection with a few.

I have my eyes on a 30 dBi,5ghz antenna but I don't know what else do I need...Do I need to connect it to a wireless router and the router to my pc?

Help me out, guys,I am pretty noob at this.

I'm sure we're all pretty noob when it comes to what you're looking for :D but I'd imagine so, since it's the antenna piece that goes into the router in that configuration.

Are you asking about a WiFi connection that goes 30 miles?

He said "in a 1-2km area" in the title.

Conventional wireless - no, Point to Point links however can reach this, get a few Yagi (directional) antennas and some wrt54g's (or any dd-wrt router that has rp-sma connectors) and set it up its not that complicated. 2.4ghz band is your friend when it comes to longer distances, but 5ghz offers more bandwidth so experimenting is key here. If you want something more reliable id recommend a Mikrotik Groove or Metal

They are more complicated and harder to set up, but will always work.

And also this: http://www.ubnt.com/airmax#airMaxHardware

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

I was hoping to find someone with a solution like plug the antenna into a thing and then plug the thing into computer.

P.S. I think I am gonna go with this one, this is the one that seems straight forward...http://routerboard.com/RBGroove-52HPn

From what I understand it's just plugging the antenna,power/data via ethernet cable and then all there is to it is the configuration,am I right?

You need 2 of these for each end just to be clear, also an antenna cable adapter but these are cheap. And i highly recommend looking at the manual/wiki for RouterOS because it will seem hard at first.

But basically PtP links are align, connect, set up.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

1-2 Km is fairly simple to achieve with high gain directional antenna's, we used to run a 2.4Ghz link over about 1.5 miles using 24dbi Andrew Dish antenna's at either end, however there is a bit more to it.

The cable that connects the wifi adapter/card/router to the antenna will have signal loss, the longer it is (and the lower quality) the more the signal will be reduced so keep this as short as possible.

You will also need line of site between both ends of the connection, so if there are houses/hills/trees etc directly between the two locations then this will also reduce the signal strength very quickly.

Two final things you need to be aware of. Most countries licence wifi based on what is called ERP or Effective Radiated Power, this means that the maximum power limit is the combined power output of the device taking the gain of the antenna into account. So with a 30dbi antenna you may well be above the limit.

The reason countries do this is because a high power highly directional wifi signal can be dangerous, you will probably be fine from the regular output of the router, but if you go down the route of getting one of those high power wifi amplifiers that can be found on ebay and you hook it into a 30dbi antenna, be VERY careful and always turn off the wifi before going near the front of the antenna.

First things first:

  • Make sure you have permission to mount the devices to the buildings, you will need to mount one at your friends house and one to yours and they need to be mounted sturdy.
  • See if there is a line of site between the 2 buildings for the best connection.
  • You will have to run some cabling and your friend will have to power one device you also will be using his/hers connection so make sure he/she is OK with this.
  • Local laws regarding EiRP and mounting of such devices.

If you do not meet one of these points don't do this it will be a waste of money.

So now that we got the warnings out of the way

You will need: Mikrotik Groove 52HPn, RP-SMA Female to N Female adapter (http://www.ebay.com/itm/RP-SMA-Female-pin-to-N-Female-Adapter-wifi-wireless-/390643643509?pt=US_Directional_Network_Antennas&hash=item5af42cf475), A Yagi antenna (http://www.ebay.com/itm/RP-SMA-2-4GHz-25-DBi-Yagi-Wireless-WLAN-WiFi-Antenna-For-Modem-PCI-Card-Router-/360713984485?pt=US_Directional_Network_Antennas&hash=item53fc3a99e5), Some cat5/cat6 cable.

You will need 2 of everything listed, you can also get different antennas if that suits you fancy (mesh, dish, pole).

Once you have everything make an example on your floor to test the system and learn how to set up the configuration (http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:TOC) also PM me il explain what steps need to be taken to set up a Point to Point link in RouterOS.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)
