Low image quality on newer GPUs

Demiqas

Ah ok thank you. Hopefully you can see it this time. (And hopefully you'll see what i mean^^)

I'm have a jagginess on the desktop as well, the different is it's happen only when windows is dragged or moved, and the jaggines or ripple looks the exact same way on the "W" letter on your capture, I already post a video showing the problems in previous posts, you might want to take a look

To those of you claiming to have these graphical issues; if you have a game called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter: Redux (which you will have if you bought the original) please give it a try. I decided to try playing the Redux version this morning (the original does not run smoothly and has issues) just to see what it was like. They have updated the game to run on the Unreal Engine 4. The game looks better than ever and runs super smooth.

At 1080p max settings, resolution scaling at 100% with TAA (temporal AA), there is virtually no aliasing. The side effect of this at this resolution, however, is a slightly "fuzzy" image quality - especially looking far into the distance. When dropping down one level to SMAA Tx2, the image quality becomes more "sharp" with very minimal aliasing. Then I saw it was only using my 980 at 40-50% usage with Vsync on, so I stepped it up to 1440p DSR with all the same settings (and SMAA Tx2). This is near perfect. The image is sharp and clear with extremely minimal aliasing in the distance (you have to look real close to see it).

So yeah, give this game and these settings a try and let us know how it runs on your PC.

This is what the letters look like on my desktop also.  This is also what letters look like on my television when watching tv and it's what almost everything looks like when watching cartoons, especially South Park.  Thanks Sanugia, this is an awesome piece of evidence!  Also, Demiqas, I thought you recently said you sold your computer so what are you testing your new gpu on?

Also, anyone who doesn't mind, can you list what power supply you are using?  Not Just the wattage either, but the brand and model.  I would also be interested in seeing what model motherboard everyone with the issue is using.

Can't really help there with brand, its plain ASUS, i'm on a ROG G551JM.

And too bad, i don't have The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, could buy it because this game actually is on my wishlist, but planned to get Rise of the Tomb Raider first, if anyday this issue can be fixed. Not really motivated to buy games right now.

Power supply and motherboard has nothing to do with this. It's just not possible.  It's most likely software-related.

Not much to debate, but sure, I can sort this out. I have enough GPU generations to test this if there is something to test. GTX 550 Ti, GTX 560 Ti (Fermi's), GTX 650, GTX 760, GTX 770 (Kepler's), GTX 750 Ti, GTX 970 (Maxwell's).

I also have enough hardware from both AMD and Intel to isolate CPU/platform issues, along with a few different brands of SSD's and HDD's. Windows from XP all the way to 10, and everything in between. If a problem exists, and information can be provided to tell me how to reproduce it, then i will try.

Do you think any of them would be up for sale after this test?

With 1080p there are a few more aliasing issues but not strong enough to catch them in a screenshot.

The problem in this video seems very familiar to ours but does that fix only works for Sony monitors? My monitor already has the latest update i guess. Would be very interesting to know if it works for someone in this forum.

Ok, very interesting... I just fired up Rise of the Tomb Raider a little while ago to see how it would run. Well it runs great maxed at 1080p on my 980. BUT, SMAA looks horrible! FXAA looked much better which really surprised me. I am using the latest game-ready drivers from Nvidia (361.75) which was released specifically for this game. So SMAA is either broken or just plain doesn't work well in this game.

Uploading gameplay footage right now. Will post as soon as it's ready. Anyone else have this game yet? How does SMAA look on your system?

Both of those have clearly been stretched from their original size to how they appear now.  This obscures the original image.  I can zoom in on my end if need be, but I need a 1:1 exact look at what you are seeing.  Also, what is that of?  It looks like part of your background image, not text for desktop icons.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

The more we dig into this and the more it starts to seem like software-related is the only answer... why does formatting not solve this than? If this is a corrupted driver why wiping and reinstalling and/or formatting doesn't seem to change anything? Could it be the conflict is with some windows basic software, at least in some of its versions or some of its updates (which would explain why not everyone is having this)? Afaik i didn't hear anyone with linux or ios lament this thing... has anyone tried formatting and installing linux instead of windows?

Might it actually be a side effect of a certain common piece of code(s) used in some games to present the graphics?

I posted this link to an interesting youtube video earlier to day but it seems to have disappeared from this forum.  So here it is again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMcftKrWNeU

Everyone on this forum should check this out.

As much as this sounds interesting, i have my doubts that's the case for us. I actually have a sony tv. I could give it a go by trying to plug my pc in it and check if this does anything. But for example my monitor never got driver updates (BenQ GL2460HM), so i doubt that's actually our case as much as i'd like for it to be such an easy solution. Also i tried (and many other did as well) with different monitors and unless we're uber unlucky and every one of them needed updating or was malfunctioning, you see how this case is really improbable. Also 2 of the monitors i treid worked flawlessly on older card. So... yeah.

I ran RTR tonight as well. I found SSAA to be the best on my 1080p monitor while using DSR to play in 1440p. FXAA caused some jaggies in trees at a medium distance and SSAAx2 and above brought my 980ti to its knees.

mother of god is it not the most beautiful game ever?

Yeah, weirdly enough FXAA does a better job. I can clearly see it in 1080p. (How's the game by the way ?)

It's like when i play the Witcher 3, if I activate tbe FXAA from the NVIDIA panel and disable the ingame AA, it'll do a better job too, making the display even more blurry thought.

I agree with you MarkFMB, it's gotta be a software issue. It's like something interfering or in conflict with display rendering and post processing (LOD Bias as well). What colors me curious is why when i watch some youtubers gameplay they have the same issues, for instance Gopher, who's playing the Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 at the moment, while i don't think he actually experience it or he would have complain about it.

I shall give the new NVIDIA drivers a try to see.

Did you mean to say you found SMAA to be best? ;)

It definitely looks way better at 1440p with DSR and it did run ok with those settings on my system (40-50fps average), but the problem with that I found is it's too heavy on the Vram. Even at 1080p it maxes out the 4GB on my 980 and occasionally causes the game to completely stop for a second - sometimes even during a cut scene (not cool). So I've stuck with keeping it at 1080p maxed and FXAA for solid 60fps. I may try running "high" preset at 1440p with FXAA or SMAA and see how that runs.

It is certainly a gorgeous game, no doubt. Among the best-looking games I've seen, but not sure I'd say it is the best-looking, IMO.

Alright, weird stuff happened since I got this 9800gt. I know you guys will probably think I'm joking by now, but I got a bluescreen on the 8 year old 9800gt and I've again started questioning the graphical fidelity. It was the same BSOD as always, and it only happened once.

Fortunately, I bought two 9800gt's from the same guy, and I have not plugged the other one in yet. I'm going to see if I can get it working and take some videos before I get the same bluescreen and graphical downgrade.

If it turns out the 9800gt truly got downgraded, it means it has to be some form of hardware damage. Again, these 9800gt's are 8 year old.

I'll try to get the videos asap. I have no experience with this so I have no idea how easy/difficult it will be, but I'll do my best

Well, here's the first video showing the, what I believe to be, broken version of the 9800gt. I made it just in case I would need it to compare it with the next 9800gt

sorry for the engurish, not a native speaker

I believe there were a few problems with the other 9800gt such as artifacting, but I'm confident I can get that fixed quickly. Once that's done I'll record a video on that card immediately, again showing all settings.

Video is not loading for me. Says it's not available.

Anyway i never had any BSODs on this pc. I did have in the first pair of weeks of usage various times when display drivers stopped working for a second or two and got black screens. That stopped happening after a pair of week, but i can't be sure if that was an actual problem or not, since i updated drivers different times wiping them after before every update since. Could have been something wrong specific to that version.

I think there's a memory leak as it uses all 6g of mine as well. I didn't see a performance hit because of it but the memory was used.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
