Low image quality on newer GPUs

Demiqas

Good day everyone, I am making this thread in response to a very iffy issue that currently many users are facing. This issue has to do with greatly reduced image quality and an array of other issues that come with mostly nvidia gpus. There is currently a thread on the nvidia forums that is 95 pages long, which I believe is the biggest thread on the nvidia forums right now. It is filled with people who have noticed this issue and are desperate for a solution. Together we've been able to draw many conclusions through an enormous user effort of experimenting with gpus, different builds, different laptops, many going as far as spending thousands of their hard earned bucks on solving this issue. We are a lot further than where we were on day one, but we still have not been able to come up with a solution. The most shady thing about this issue is nvidia's attitude towards it. They have gone as far to enable shills to try and convince us that all these issues are in our heads and none of it is real. When they had seen that we did not fall for it, they ended up hiding the thread, so that no one can see it unless you have the link to it (there's a link to the thread all the way below). Not only that, despite having hid the thread they still continue to monitor it and are deleting posts on a daily basis that contain any useful information towards solving this problem. It is obvious that nvidia for some reason does not want people to know about this. Below I will explain what the reduced image quality is all about and what conclusions we have drawn:

Through trying out a bunch of different Nvidia gpus we have noticed an infuriating pattern. When you buy an nvidia gpu the image quality will be great for the first few weeks. All control panel settings such as anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering et cetera work perfectly and you are happy with your new nvidia card. Shortly after this, weird stuff starts happening. You get completely random bluescreens, about once every few days. Each time you get one of these bluescreens your image quality starts dropping. The first time you get it you start noticing that the amount of pop-ins are increasing. The second time you get a bluescreen you start noticing more aliasing in your games, but still not severe enough to cause worry. Now after you get about 4 or 5 of these, your image quality drops to an all new low. Anti aliasing starts malfunctioning, lod bias and thus sharpness and graininess of textures start being completely messed up. Temporal aliasing increases in such a way that not even TXAA or 8x SGSSAA will get rid of it. You can downsample from 4k resolution and enable the highest anti-aliasing (we've honestly tried it all), and you will still not get rid of these odd white jaggies. The best way to explain it is as if all games have been upscaled from a very low resolution. This issue is noticable in gifs and videos aswell, not just video games. A large group of people seem to have noticed it. Some passed on thinking it's normal, others ended up in our thread. We have tried over 6 different nvidia gpus and it has happened to all of them. This did not happen on any AMD gpu at all. The most interesting thing? Older gpus don't have this issue. Below you will see two screenshots. The first one, the good looking one, was taken on a 7800GS. The second one was taken on a GTX 980. (NOTE: This is only an example. It happens on both newer games, older games, directx games, opengl games and applications aswell).

7800GS:

7800GS.png

GTX 980:

980GTX.png

Notice how much uglier and less smooth everything looks on the gtx 980 compared to the older card. This may not seem like too much of a big deal when looking at these two screenshots, but in modern and many older games combined with motion and broken anti-aliasing, the result is something that can unfortunately be best described as "eye cancer". The biggest question is, how is it possible that the first few weeks everything looks top-notch, but then the quality suddenly starts degrading? It means that the newer cards are infact capable of rendering games properly, how come they don't?

After we started exploring this issue more we noticed something else thats interesting. That is the fact that despite an LOD bias setting being in the control panel, it has been disfunctional since the release of the fermi architecture. A user on the geforce forums was nice enough to look into it, and he noticed it would take nvidia about 3 lines of code to make the LOD bias settings functional. Now two questions can be asked:

1. Why is nvidia making people think the LOD bias setting is still working?

2. Why have they removed it when it's only a few lines of code?

This is a big deal, because when we used nvidia inspector to increase the LOD bias manually, we noticed a lot of the flickering and graininess went away (they removed the posts where we talked about this)! The white jaggies issue was still there (this is on 1080p resolution with 8xMSAA and 8xSGSSAA on, using Skyrim as reference point) but the quality went up drastically nevertheless. If LOD bias clamping would work properly, many games would end up having a huge jump in quality. So again, why has nvidia removed this while simultaniously making us think it's still there?

The reason why I have posted this thread on linustechtips is because we need help. As I've said before, nvidia has hid our thread and are continuously deleting our posts. This issue needs to be more widely known as nvidia will never fix it unless we have masses complaining about it. How does it feel knowing that the image quality in all your games could be immensely better than how it now?

Anti Aliasing? Idk the top looks more warm and fuzzy while the bottom looks sharper and jagged edges. Probably older games made for DX10 and 9 and Nvidia being lazy

As I've said before, nvidia has hid our thread and are continuously deleting our posts.

Link to the hidden thread: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/831430/geforce-900-series/pixelated-shadows-texture-popins-gtx-960-970-980-ect-/

 If this is true... my god, I don't even know what should happen to them, but it should be something very bad...

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

What?? nVidia deleting bad rep?? I thought they were perfect!

Maybe it's cause the game was made for older cards. I have no idea.

No, this happens in every single game and application. It has nothing to do with age of the games. Yes nvidia has a bad rep, I've been in the gaming buisiness for a while aswell. But this is seriously an all new low to hide our thread and delete our posts.

Anti Aliasing? Idk the top looks more warm and fuzzy while the bottom looks sharper and jagged edges. Probably older games made for DX10 and 9 and Nvidia being lazy

Read what I've said above. This happens in every single game and application and even happens on OpenGL games. It has nothing to do with DX. I WISH it was only that, I'd be happily gaming now.

Try some modern games rather instead of comparing 1 very old game.

Read my post above. This has nothing to do with older games. If you visit the thread, you'll see an array of video games with these exact same issuse, new, old, directx, opengl, applications, it happens on all of them. As I've said, I wish it was only on older games, I'd be happily gaming now!

No kidding.  It seems to me like they've intentionally created this problem and are actively trying to cover it up and stop people from discovering it.  I read some of that hidden thread; please do start archiving it by reposting things here.  We need a solid evidence trail

No, this happens in every single game and application. It has nothing to do with age of the games. Yes nvidia has a bad rep, I've been in the gaming buisiness for a while aswell. But this is seriously an all new low to hide our thread and delete our posts.

Read what I've said above. This happens in every single game and application and even happens on OpenGL games. It has nothing to do with DX. I WISH it was only that, I'd be happily gaming now.

Okay. Well, I don't know what you individually can do. Maybe see comparisons with the new nVidia GPUs VS their AMD counter-parts? Maybe it's the same.

I used to be quite active here.

We have tried a bunch of amd and nvidia gpus. The patterns described in my thread only happen to Nvidia* gpus.

Read mine.

I don't know what you want me to read. If you need comparisons of modern games, there are plenty in the thread I linked.

Never found these issues since i'm not playing a game that looks like it was ripped off a PS2.

BF4 still looks flawless and performance is still top notch ever since i got my 980. Crysis 3, CS:GO, ETS2 all look great.

Does your GPU show these signs OP?

It does. Hold on, infact I'll bother uploading a video comparison of guild wars 2 on my gtx and guild wars 2 on my 260x. When I had my AMD card, anti aliasing worked perfectly. Even MSAA looked better than what my SGSSAA looks like. I've tried both a gtx 960 and a gtx 750ti and it happened to both of em.

Unfortunately I could not find the old 750ti footage. I will upload it sometime but right now youtube is telling me it will take 1100 minutes.

I do still have the footage on my r7 260x for those who wish to see it:

Note how much more smooth everything looks in general. No visible pop-ins at all. Ofcourse there's still some aliasing but that's just normal aliasing coming form a lack of proper AA in guild wars 2. I hope I can upload the 750ti video soon so you can see how disgusting it looks in comparison.

It does. Hold on, infact I'll bother uploading a video of me playing minecraft with 4x supersampling. When I had my AMD card, anti aliasing worked perfectly. Even MSAA looked better than what my SGSSAA looks like. I've tried both a gtx 960 and a gtx 750ti and it happened to both of em.

You upload that video. Show all the big bad nvdia users what happens to an odd-ball selection of cards. I don't really give two hoots if AA worked 'perfectly' for your AMD card.

Also minecraft? Really? I've heard rumours about it being a bit shoddy but you could have used something that is new and current. Like Fallout 4 or Black Ops III for example. You know, games that someone who's splashed on a 980 might actually play. Not that there's anything wrong with MC itself but it doesn't seem like the greatest example to use.

If I have time today I will see if I can take some screen shots with my own engine (Direct3D 11.1 rendering engine, no OGL or d3d12 yet.)

Edit: It will probably be just a simple cube on screen but it should be sufficient to see if if AA is working at least.

Odd-ball selection of cards? How unfortunate that 95 pages worth of people's despair all come from just a small bunch of odd-ball cards. If you don't give two hoots about image quality being much better on amd cards then I don't think this is the right thread for you at all and I kindly ask you to leave instead of cluttering my thread.

also note that I'm not praising amd's image quality at all, I'm bashing nvidias lack of it. It's just that the only other gpu company happens to be amd.

Who's screenshots are those in the OP?

They are taken from the thread I have linked at the bottom of my thread. It's all a bunch of gefore users that have collected all of this information including the screenshots in my OP.

I recommend everyone who wishes to learn more about this issue to take a look at the thread. A LOT of videos have been made on this issue and I wish not to go over it again. The thread really contains a ton of information!

Well I'm not going to go through every single page. Waste of time.

But basically, the reason I ask is because I wanted to see some confirmation on the AA technique being the same for both screenshots.

Other thing is, has anyone tested this between systems side by side? Please don't tell me to sift through those 100 pages. I just want to see some actual proof for this and not an entire thread which consists mostly of ranting.

I want to actually see evidence for this. Obviously you believe it since you sat here and typed out this huge post, but you haven't provided any actual evidence other than a couple of screenshots that may or may not be of the same AA technique and then a thread that was hidden away on the GeForce forums (which may have been hidden for a good reason, not because there may be an issue with Nvidia's cards).

What the fuck are you even going on about? The jagginess in image quality is just as bad in both but it looks like the 980 just uses a different version of AA. I swear you people just WANT to create conspiracies.

I wish it was all a conspiracy, I would've not needed 95 pages of dicuscussion and this forum thread to go on about it and could instead go and enjoy my games. I wish it was just a different type of AA, I would've applied that to all of my games and I'd be able to enjoy normal visual quality. Unfortunately, I can't. I and many others in the thread had the honor of witnessing the direct downgrade of IQ that I mentioned in this thread (read the whole thing if you haven't). I am not interesting in creating any unecessary conspiracy. A conspiracy often implies the theory of one anyway. This isn't a theory, this is something that is actually happening.

As for proof, I had hoped the forum thread would be enough but if not then I will compile them and post this in this thread tommorow. It's 1 am over here though and I'm going to hit the hay soon. I still recommend looking through the thread as it has months worth of information on it. You don't need to look through all 95 pages ofcourse.

I don't believe you. Pray tell, what are the error codes for the so-called random BSODs you and other users have reported? I've owned an NVIDIA GPU for a while now, my brother has in his laptop, and my sister has as well in her laptop for the past year, and we've never had random bluescreens whose causes can be traced back to graphics card issues, aside from one when my sister was using the integrated Intel GPU after upgrading to Windows 10 and while playing Minecraft. Furthermore, can you provide evidence that this occurs in more recent games, such as Far Cry 3 or 4, Battlefield 4, Battlefield: Hardline, Black Ops 3, Star Citizen, GTA V, as well as proof that you used the exact same settings on both an NVIDIA and AMD graphics card? Before we get up in arms about this and start hating NVIDIA again for the umpteenth time, can we please look at this objectively?

Furthermore, if these bluescreens do in fact occur, why aren't they featured often in the troubleshooting section where so many users place computer concerns? If it were a glaring issue, we would see unbiased, third-party members reporting it. The fact that these issues have only been reported to the NVIDIA forum, where people would be more likely to have an ulterior motive, seems a tad suspicious to me, like some people are trying to slander NVIDIA's reputation unfairly.

And have you ever thought that NVIDIA hid that particular thread because it was getting out of hand? Perhaps because NVIDIA thought that the people were unfairly attacking them, and they want to preserve their reputation, and thus saw fit to prevent users from stumbling across it and stop buying their products for no reason. There is certainly room for suspicion in that regard, but without concrete evidence we should not be so quick as to demonize NVIDIA, okay?

Why is the God of Hyperdeath SO...DARN...CUTE!?

Also, if anyone has their mind corrupted by an anthropomorphic black latex bat, please let me know. I would like to join you.

if nvidia had nothing to hide they would have nothing to fear. Instead they didn't even stop at hiding the thread, they are still deleting any useful new posts that are being made inside of it. Read my post above yours, there is plenty of evidence in many new games including battlefield and far cry in the mentioned thread. I will try to compile some important ones tommorow morning.

I don't know about your mentality if you truly think a plethora of users would come together to spend months of their times and thousands of their bucks in an attempt to slander some company. I've been using nvidia for a while and I have no reason to blindly hate on them, I am just immensely bothered by this issue and their attitude towards it.

The mentioned bluescreens are not an on going series of blue screens. They stop after the first few times when your image quality has come to an all new low.

If you truly want evidence right here and right now, then read my thread and notice the fact that the LOD bias settings are genuinely not working and the fact that a lot of games go up in quality after adjusting LOD values through nvidia inspector.

I still don't see a change in actual image quality, only AA.

As I have explained in the OP, no amount of AA fixes the degredation noticable in the two screenshots. Increasing LOD bias does help a lot, and that allows us to ask the question: why has nvidia removed the LOD bias settings while still keeping it in the control panel, making us think it's functional?
