Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

My mother has two laptops thats she uses at home, and neither of them have ever been backed up. I would buy her an external hard drive to plug into her wireless router so that I could set up an automatic wireless backup system!

Something like this would do nicely, I think: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FRHTTIA?keywords=external%20hdd&qid=1449149256&ref_=sr_1_4&s=pc&sr=1-4

i Have a pretty fun little history, i am the only techsavy guy on my family my brother knows how to use computers but he is how do i say. "Limited to Facebook applications only" as for my mother and my father, they literally NEVER used a computer before.

So with some time and money i did setup a windows computer for them, not the greatest but now the worse eighter, and that is where the fun begin, my father did just gave up on learning he told me to teach my mother and he might learn from her, so i started teaching her, we created a facebook account, email all that good stuff.

She was a really good learner BUT also very stubborn sometimes i would want to teach her how to do something so i went to grab the mouse and she would literally slap my hand and say "DONT DO IT, SHOW ME HOW TO DO!" and man, that happened so many times hahahaha.

At some point i was getting really upset, cuz all the time i was receiving calls or sms messages like "how do i do this, how do i do that, how do i open google, where is the start menu?" and also the computer almost all the times would have a LOT of adware installed and the webpages would get so fill with ads that browsing was impossible, so at this point i gave up and tried another approach.

I Sold the computer, i made what i think until today was my best buy yet, i bought an iPad for them, and man, that thing was just GREAT, i literally NEVER EVER told them nothing about how to use it, i just gave it to my mother and in the other day she was doing everything from facebook to youtube, and my father also started using it in order to manage his bank account(Finally losing that mentality of baking on a computer its too much insecure), the only problem i had with it is that i bought a 16gb version, and it gets full much faster than i would wish.

by this time something happened, my little sister was born, and after 5 months all i hear was kiddy songs for her and another complaint started "this iPad volume its too low!" so i started to think how i could improve her experience on media consumption, so what i did was. i sacrificed my playstation 3 in order to use it as a Media center computer cuz we don't have a Smart TV, and it worked, the problem was it is too much complicated setup, she needed to change the TV Input, turn on the PS3 open up the youtube or netflix app, and then she could use the iPad to chose what to watch.

But even with these downsides i keep it this way, (even tho my little sister LOVES to turn the PS3 off pushing the pretty green light on it), so what i did to improve her experience was, i kind did what linus did for his parents, i bought a 1st generation Apple airport express (those who look like a macbook charger) and plugged it into our sound system, and man my friends, that shall be the 2nd best buy i ever did, now she would put songs for my sister to listen with just some taps, and it would sound great.

now my goal its to improve they viewing experience to replace the PS3, and also to replace the iPad cuz, my mother is starting to want to do more things than th eipad its capable, like light video editing, cuz she records each step of my little sister and like to publish it on social media.

i am thinking about buying a macbook air for her, cuz she is already into Apple's ecosystem, or maybe a more powerful iPad with more storage,

What i would like to linus to Gift us would be an Apple TV, or another set box, like and Nvidiashield streaming, or Roku things like that, in order to cast stuff to the TV better, i Would prefer the Apple TV but it is not being sold on Amazon unfortunately  <_< as well as a Chromecast, but neither of those are being sold there.

so i would bet on the Nvidia Shield steaming

http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-STREAMING-ADVANCED-GAMING-ANDROID/dp/B00U33Q940/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449149019&sr=8-2&keywords=nvidia+shield

Well thanks for reading my life Story, i hope it inspired somebody as well as i hope you liked it. :)

BTW i am throwing a photo of my little sister watching a video on my iPhone 5, she already knows how to open youtube by herself,

its kind a creepy actually. maybe next time she will teach my mother how to sue stuff ahaha.

A WD Network enabled hard drive for my mother. That way she could have easy access to media files instead of trying to use my basic file sharing setup or constantly putting things onto USB sticks over and over. A backup system would be nice as well. Her PC got fried by lightning and needed to be replaced sooooo....

That is supposed to be the 4TB version. Odd numbers bother me.

I would've said the chromecast because my parents use their tv a lot and making their "dumb" tv to a smart tv would be nice. Buuuut amazon doesnt sell the chromecast so I am going to say the google onhub router because my parents are still using the one that they got from our ISP which isnt ideal at all.

I would like to bring to my parents a NAS solution like these: http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Network-Attached-Storage-WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN/dp/B00I2P82CS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1449131291&sr=8-4&keywords=wd+nas

Because they needme even to search a file in the computer, in special my father, who have a lot of issues to know how to use a pc and it will have can acces to her files with the smartphone or on my moms tablet.

Another reason is to make a backup of her files, because they loose all of their photos and memories saved on a HDD for my fault, and try that doesn't happen again with the NAS.

Thanks for the giveaway Linus, and good luck everyone!!

I think im going to go for a nuc this year for my parents as a joint Christmas present. A couple of years ago i brought my dad a WD LIVE, (my opinion: terrible piece of kit) the 1-4 minute boot time and the bloaty menu off of a turnip powered pc is really getting annoying. he uses it (the live) to watch the american motocross, you guys have no idea what trouble it is to get it in the uk. the last reason why this would be an amazing upgrade? The ability to use the play-to feature properly. on the WD Live, itll send a thumbnail picture and then you have to go back updtaris to the pc to be able to play it, and to pause it you have to go back up stairs and pause if you what a snack. its the most infuriating thing in the world.

so yeah, NUC please!

My brother has a computer I built him years ago with a Phenom II and a HD 5770, all spare parts from when I upgraded my own PC. He knows nothing about computers, just plays games. I would hate for him to overpay for an alienware or something. A Gigabyte G1 R9 390 would be a huge boost for him. Now I know he needs a couple more things, but I have the spare parts for an upgrade to CPU and PSU and all that. I just don't have a spare GPU since my 680 burnt out on me.

I would love to gift my dad one of these Chromebooks cuz it feels awkward seeing him manage his accounts and other important schedules in plain paper

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Chromebook-14-Inch-Newest-Version/dp/B00N3ODBBA/ref=sr_1_16?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449151241&sr=1-16&keywords=chromebook

Or if that doesn't count due to shipping issues perhaps a NAS drive for my mother to watch some movies or see pics would be nice as she is having a hard time finding pics or stuff up from the cloud services http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Network-Attached-Storage-WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN/dp/B00I2P82CS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1449131291&sr=8-4&keywords=wd+nas%C2%A0

Or perhaps a Wii for my sister as she is not good enough to grab games from steam nor get used to keyboard controls

About 8 months ago, my brother asked me to build him a computer so he can use to do his work (mostly e-mails and excel sheets), and his gaming (mostly World of Warcraft). He had a pretty tight budget, we reused the old case and hard drive (which he purchased a couple months before as an upgrade), the main components I bought for him were a Pentium G3258 and a R9 270.

However, now he started to edit some videos (just for fun, more like a hobbie), and wants to play Fallout 4. He was complaining a bit about his 'brand new computer' was a bit slow at these tasks.

I want to give him a new CPU! (and donate him my R9 280X once I upgrade next month).

I want to give him a i5 4690k, he won't be OCing, but it's the best CPU we can fit on that socket without breaking the bank.

I'd surely give my parents a new router. Our current one is on the corner of the house (and on the upper floor), so they complain about bad wi fi on the whole lower floor and their room, but refuse to let me put a cable + 2nd router to fix it.

And since Linus said the Xclaim Xi-3 was going to be my next AP, this is what I want: http://www.amazon.com/Xclaim-Dual-Band-802-11ac-Indoor-1-167Gbps/dp/B00Q5PG3KA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449152769&sr=8-1&keywords=Xclaim+XI-3
