Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

I'd get YARN.

I've learned that...

Crafty ladies, love yarn.

Crafty ladies hate figuring out why the VPN isn't working.

What kind of yarn you ask ? Well... I'd say, just search YARN and choose some weird stuff like...

This glow in the dark yarn!

http://www.amazon.com/Glow-Dark-Yarn-Fingering-Weight/dp/B00NRF2R2E/

or.. no! even better!

a bunch of this... (I bet $300 of it would be enough for a sweet blanket..)

http://www.amazon.com/Living-Dreams-Yarn-Cream-White/dp/B00HG185N0/

There is way too much yarn to choose from... Plus I have to fix the VPN..

2004 - I started using computers when i was about 4. I'm 16 now and when I think back to it I realize how much luck I have. My parents only knew the basics and a bit of word processing. Sometimes, my mom would teach me how to open and close programs. We did not have internet at that time. so we were buying CDs. I still remember the old programs Winamp, WMP Classic, Netscape which i Never got to use. We got internet in 2011. I was totally dumb and didn't know what ads were, I was just clicking on the fake download buttons and downloading viruses. Hell, you could say that i learned the hard way.

2010 - I remember one time when I completely messed up windows by changing values in the registry not knowing it. My dad had to spent quite a sum to get that fixed. Still windows xp by the way. Windows was so messed up that a reinstall was required. So we decided to upgrade to win 7. (Non-genuine) since my parents could not afford it and did not understand what the difference was between genuine and pirated.

2013 - I took a course about repairing computers and maintaining them. After that, I acted like a badass who seemed to know everything about computers. and opened the case of the ONLY ONE pc that we had in the house and started messing around. I removed the ram and was showing it to my parents, Their reaction was priceless. It was like my dad was going to have a heart attack. I was a little scared and in a hurry, i went to put the RAM back inside. When i closed everything, and tried to power onn..."BEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEP" RAM ERROR.

I opened the case only to see that I put the ram the wrong way I did not align it with the notch and pushed only one end in. It was terrible.Had to send it to a certified technician to fix. He said that one of the RAM sticks was dead and when he removed it the other 1GB worked. Still using DDR2 by the way. After the fix when my parents left me home alone, I would open the computer and take a look inside, I remember once I put the processor the wrong way where the small triangle did not line up and forced closed the latch and messed up the whole MOBO. After that I took an A+ course where I got to experiment with some computers under the supervision of a teacher and he taught me how to do everything from beginning to end. He even made me take a pc apart and reassembling it...3 times.

End of 2014 - I found this channel called LINUS TECH TIPS on you tube. I started watching his videos, reviews and was amazed by the way he describes how he does what he does.

2015 - My dad is a very busy man and he is the owner of a pharmacy and has to work all day from 9 in the morning to 7 or 8 at night you could say that its only half a day, But after work he gets really tired and wants to relax. He only gets Sundays to spend time with the whole family after work and he does his best to keep us happy. And I want to make him happy too and i want to give him a laptop he could carry around and do what he likes easily. I want him to be able to use the internet at ease without having to get fooled about misleading ads and stuff.

Anything you can recommend That can be used to surf the net and get work done is ok.

Thanks in advance. ;)

A new 250$ samsung 1080p tv. My parents still use a gigantic 360p or worse tv that she uses to watch things at literal puke quality.

My mom could use a new tablet. She currently has a Nexus 7 2012, but lacks a SIM card and is only 16 GB. Aside from that, it has gotten really sluggish, even with a custom ROM installed, and charges terribly slow (not sure why, all chargers and cables aren't able to output more than 0.8A anymore).

I think the Nexus 7 2013 (32GB with LTE) would be a great upgrade for her. She really likes the form factor.

I would give my girlfriend an ssd for her laptop as she is always moving it around while the inside harddrive is spinning and damaging the disk and the data which she has already lost, the disk health is very low now!

Ooh, this is a cool idea. A tech gift for my non-tech savvy mother? Probably not an SSD for her laptop since she wouldn't know how to install it. Last few smartphones I got her required her to find a landline to call me and ask how to operate it. And her entertainment center setup is pretty much a tv and a Roku which she still has to call me to figure out how the netflix works.
So whats the most tech I'd get for her given what I know now? At the risk of further hours of tech support via skype or landline if she can't get skype working, I kinda wanna say an Amazon Echo that she can hook up in her kitchen and just ask for what she wants. I'm sure it'll turn into a call from our neighbors asking why she's screaming "ECHO, CAN YOU HEAR ME, PLAY ME THE SONG OF YOUR PEOPLE!". But I don't want to quite give up on her yet. She'll figure it out, I'm sure.

I'd probably gift my parents a camera. http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Digital-Optical-Built-In/dp/B00T85P56C/ref=zg_bs_281052_1
Just because they never had a good camera and because my little sister (she's 8) is singing, dancing and playing violin. So for my parents a good camera would be a tool to save all of those magical moment when I'm not around to help them do that.

My sister plays computer games on a decent computer but has only got a vintage Dell AT-101 keyboard for gaming and it lags a ton but she doesn't even know what lag means. She thinks the lag is to do with the wifi (she doesn't know what that is either). So I would like to get her this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet-Illuminated-Programmable-Keyboard-Water-Resistant/dp/B010O3L8T4/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1449923275&sr=1-2&keywords=razer+mouse+and+keyboard+set

Hello there, Linus and Co. I've been a HUGE fan of your work and help as well as VLogs, etc. Back in the day, me and my parents had an OLD SCHOOL Computer, I honestly can't remember what kind, but this was about 15+ years ago. That was the only computer my Mother has ever owned in her entire life as hers and it was a gift from my father to her. One day in my immature and ignorant past, I wound up tearing up said computer to where it no longer worked. It wasn't anything fancy or anything more of the likes, but it god the job we used it for done. I remember back in those days where me and my parents, generally my mother, would sit on the computer side by side for hours on end watching videos, TV shows, movies as well as playing a few games, some for fun and a few to help me learn back in my early childhood. We also would take time to look up things that interested us to read up more on things such as lore and recent topics and such, just a bunch of random things. When that computer finally tore up and died, we lost all of that, later my parents bought me my own computer, but we never really got that bonding experience we used to have back. Sure, I'd go to her or she would come to my room and we would a little here and there, but it just wasn't the same... Since then my mother has basically done without and I'm greatly wanting to do something extremely special for her. She's been wanting to have her very own desktop computer for SEVERAL years now, but I've just never been able to fulfill that desire for her as of yet...and she hasn't had the money to be able to buy her own either as back in 2009, my father sadly passed away and she had lost over 3/5ths of their total income.. Since then, we've just been barely scraping by and had to have moved twice now. Enough of the sad/depressing stuff, sorry, but I just wanted to explain a little to understand it all better. Here recently I've been able to buy/gather some parts together to be able to build my mother her own Desktop Computer, nothing special by all means, but enough for her to get on the internet, look things up, watch some videos, work on and such. I've so far managed to gather a Processor, Mobo, Heatsink, HDD, Power Supply, a Keyboard, a Mouse and a Monitor as well as the Cables, basically almost enough to get the computer started, but I've fallen short and don't currently have the funds to buy her the RAM AND the case that she wants for this Computer. A little while back, I sat down with her and talked about buying the parts to build the computer for her and went through with her to let her pick out the case she wanted for her Computer, something that she could have picked up custom to suit her personality. However, I haven't told her that I've been getting the parts together for her computer, I've been doing this in secret because I'm desperately wanting to put it together and wrap it up some for her to open on Christmas Day as a Surprise.

So the thing I would most greatly appreciate to be able to get for her is the Case that she wants for her Computer. It's the Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Edition Full Sized Tower, Link Below. I know the price of the case is normally a little over $300, but it's currently on sale for $199, if the price happens to go back up, the other thing I lack for finishing it is the RAM, Kingston HyperX Beast 32GB Kit, Link Below also.. She also will be using this computer as a workstation in place of her Tablet she currently uses and she has problems seeing and typing on it, I know it isn't all necessary, but I'm really wanting to build her a decently powerful computer as she isn't very tech savvy and has been known to leave a lot of things running at once and I've picked out specifically for this build a pretty good set of RAM for it because I want this to be uniquely special to her and myself as well, for her. If you all do choose this, I cannot express my immense gratitude and appreciation, I can't, really. Regardless, I think it is an extremely thoughtful and generous give-away that you guys have came up with for this Christmas to help those who need help with preparing/giving that someone special in our lives an amazing Christmas Present. Regardless of whether or not she wins, I thank you for this chance, it's not often people or companies do things as generous as you all are right now and I'm glad to see you guys showing this great community how much you care about us as individuals and our loved ones, of course you guys didn't have to do this give-away at all, you weren't forced to or anything of the likes, but you chose to for us and for that, I'm extremely grateful. Sincerely, thank you.

I would give my brother a CPU upgrade, he's still rocking an i3 at the moment  http://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX80646I74790K-i7-4790K-Processor-Cache/dp/B00KPRWAX8/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449927606&sr=1-2&keywords=i7+6700k

I'm really sorry if that's cheeky, it comes in at $299.99 at the moment, if not I'm sure he'd still be happy with a good i5 CPU with socket 1150 please, thanks :)

I would give my sister a Microsoft Band 2

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0163CQBHE/ref=twister_B016951IQ4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Shes a bit of a fitness freak, goes running anf cycling a lot. She still uses a Fitbit Flex right now I think. which is nothing more than a pedometer. So getting her something with more advanced features like GPS, heart rate sensor etc. would probably be a brilliant idea.

As she's using a Windows Phone, this band seems to be the locigal choice.

It's a pitiable sight watching my Mum attempt to use her Samsung Tablet, stumped by issues as minor as not understanding that wifi is essential to connectivity, and that fixing a lost connection is a swipe away no matter how many times I explain it... She does however fare much better with a Windows OS thankfully, and there isn't a period of time where I don't see her on my sister's laptop, all whilst claiming she doesn't need her own device. For that reason I choose this amazing little package, in red: http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-X205TA-11-6-Inch-Laptop-Notebook/dp/B015EL2BNS/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Even if you don't choose me, thanks for putting out opportunities like this to all of us, and I wish you all a very good christmas!
