Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

Thanks Linus for this great giveaway :)

I would like to get a NAS for my parents...they have one external hdd on which they store old photos and such, but it is getting old and it's USB only.

My dad could just use network access to show all the photos on the TV or laptop.

thanks  :)

google onhub because my parents complain about the wifi all the time. I have ethernet and it's fine but the wifi sucks, it doesn't work like further than 5 meters, and our house is bigger than that. So that would be perfect!  :)

My dad has been my drive for getting into IT, I can remember when I was younger sitting with him whilst he did some magic with floppy drives (that I now know was installing server software haha) for some of the local businesses. He even used to own a computer repair shop once upon a time and has told me some great stories from when he did.

These days however he's not so much of a tech head anymore and loves gardening, he was super impressed when he got his new galaxy 5 after using a really old phone for years. There's one thing he really loves doing (and I hated!!!) which is putting on some music when he gets home. Currently he just plays it through his phone which he thinks is the best thing ever. For months (probably nearly a year) he's been going on about getting some speakers and constantly looks at the bose and sonos websites for them and asks me about which one to save up for.

If I could just straight up buy it for him I would but I'm a student and I can barely afford to live half the time haha! So I want to get him one of the sonos smart speakers so when he gets home he can crank his music up and relax (and so I can hijack when I come over!!!!!).

Who's the present for? - My dad
Why? - He's been asking about speakers for nearly a year and I would love to suprise him for Christmas with something like this but I can't afford to being a student ;(
The gift - Sonos play:3 http://www.amazon.com/SONOS-PLAY-Smart-Speaker-Streaming/dp/B005441AJC/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449777405&sr=1-7&keywords=sonos $299 on amazon.com.

Best of luck to everyone! Awesome giveaway idea.

And my dad is getting some RGB LED lights for our living room so i thought that it would be a good idea to get a really good looking case that would look cool with the lights(The pc is in the living room). And hopefully we can put it all together as an father and son project! And ofcourse we're going to watch your videos for help if its needed!

Hi there! I'm George.

I'd like to gift to my parents either an Amazon Fire TV Box (because they broke the Netflix on my Wii) or a Nvidia Shield (They won't let me have a PS4 or Xbox One. My newest console is previously said Wii. So I'd get to game on it and they'd get to watch movies on it. And then everyone is happy!)

Amazon Fire TV: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00U3FPN4U/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1449777720&sr=8-1π=SY200_QL40&keywords=Amazon+Fire+TV&dpPl=1&dpID=31t3CwdjAXL&ref=plSrch

Nvidia Shield: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00U33Q940/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1449777785&sr=8-2π=SX200_QL40&keywords=nvidia+shield&dpPl=1&dpID=31sBdWqyflL&ref=plSrch&th=0

Funny that @nicklmg mentions that situation as "why" but it's actually really close to the truth, although probably worse, haha.
My FATHER still has a slide phone which was probably worth $20 NEW. He's not totally out of touch with technology (he can use MS Office better than me), but he never got on the smartphone train, both cause he didn't really need it and also because he couldn't "afford" it as he never can with things he doesn't see as necessity.

Recently my mother bought herself a smartphone that's actually worth the name, and gave my father her old "smartphone" which is utter crap, I tried installing CyanogenMod on it but it got even worse, my father tried using it but it was so slow that he gave up.

I was thinking about getting him a cheap Chinese smartphone which would be still better than my mother's old one, but since you made this Giveaway I guess I'll try my luck and get something better, hehe.

The smartphone is the Zenfone 2, which is a good compromise between power and price, currently at $196.42 on Amazon.com, in my country it's at €266,49 as of now.

 http://www.amazon.com/ZenFone-Unlocked-Cellphone-Black-Warranty/dp/B00VWKKEYO/ref=sr_1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1449777634&sr=1-2&keywords=asus+zenfone+2

Hopefully it won't cost more than $300 as its retail price is $299. Even used would be ok.

Thanks again for the opportunity, you guys rock!

I am the one who knocks.

My mom has an old Pentium 3 that was my first computer that she built for me when I was younger. Nowadays she is retired and I'd like a Chromebox to give to her.

Also she will need speakers, this Logitech set will be awesome for her.

My brother's cpu is nearing its end, and an amd FD8350 would be perfect for him

He also is using a stock cooler, so a water cooler would be very helpful, like the corsair h60

A pair of good headphones for my Dad. My mom keeps coming downstairs to tell him to lower the volume of the TV when she sleeps. He's too cheap to buy a good pair. He keeps buying cheap ones and toss them away after a couple of days.

Here's the model I had in mind:

I would buy my Dad a pair of Bose QuietComfort 25s. He travels a lot for work and these would be great for planes and hotel rooms. I use mine often without them plugged into anything when I just want to tune out the world and I think he would appreciate the same.

$329CAD -> $241.50USD Although.... Amazon US lists at $299USD so we are getting a good deal?

Hey! I would love to get my mom a IRobot vacuum cleaner. She is always compalining about bits of dirt and cat hair all over the floor, and I admit, I do ask her to get the regular vacuum out and clean it up. But if she had this, it would make life so much easier as it could do a quick clean every day while she's at work.

Best part it I found one for $299 on Amazon, and it's in the Pet Series so it's ideal for the cat hairs too :P. Here is the link! http://www.amazon.com/iRobot-Roomba-Vacuum-Cleaning-Robot/dp/B009D00R3S/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1449779306&sr=8-8&keywords=robot+vacuum

Good luck to everyone who takes part and I wish everyone on the forum and LMG a very happy Christmas!

Definitely a UPS like this one

The rest of my immediate family lives in a less-than-stable area in terms of the power grid, and I've had several power supplies and motherboards die from power surges (as well as frequent complaints of lost document work/etc.).

At my moms she had a at least 20 year old Bose sound system in our family room. It recently broke due to my brother playing some bass intensive music and blowing up the speakers. I've been looking around to buy her a new theater system for about 2 weeks for Christmas. I stumbled against this giveaway and decided lets give it a try.

I would like to gift my dad a UPS since he has a large speaker HTPC setup that draws a decent amount of power. He's not tech-savvy at all; he can barely use a web browser and he doesn't backup or save his work often. Two birds, one stone. The UPS will help with clean power delivery and backup power in case the electricity goes out.
