Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

Wow, that's a nice giveaway! Thank you!

I would get my dad a smartphone, since he still uses a nokia 1100 as a phone, and a Sony Walkman NW-A as an mp3-player ( & a seperate GPS, ...). A smartphone would be a good way to combine all these things into 1.

My choice would be a Oneplus X, but since that's not available on Amazon, I'd probably go for a Moto G2015 16GB Black.

I wanna give my niece a pair of Bose SoundTrue Ultra in-ear headphones.

I really want to give her this because she is stilling use the broken headphones form her HTC M8 when she bought the phone. She has been bagging me to buy one for about a year., but I don't have the money to give her what she wants as a gift.

My Mum

I made a ITX computer a while back, then after a while I sold it to my mum as a device to watch videos from their Plex server. I thought it would be simple, just use the Apple app to tell the pc to play a video, no keyboard or mouse. But like your video, ever other week I get a call asking "why isnt it working correctly"... Plus with the Shield + remote they can use both Plex AND Netflix. (also you cant get a Chromecasts from Amazon. So next best thing???)

This WD NAS is what I was thinking of getting for my parents.

I'm hoping this is much more user friendly for them, rather than my dodgy Freenas system, built on some 10 year old second hand PC is on it's deathbed.

I hate having to get on the phone and troubleshoot for them when it isn't working properly.

Tbh though, it's usually because they didn't press the on button lmao

Two months after XP Day last year, I finally got my parents off their old Athlon XP based eMachines for my old Athlon 64 X2 rig hand me down that I got from a very good friend back in 2010.  I still haven't heard the end of it, with every little issue being suplanted with "can you just get the old computer out of the closet?" (Took the hard drives out to keep them away from it).  The hard drives in the Athlon 64 rig have done their time, and already have a CX430M and 240GB ADATA SSD sitting in a box in my room to try and milk a couple more years worth of performance out of it before it really kicks the can.

Specs on the eMachines:

Athlon XP 3000+ @ 2.17 Ghz.

1 GB DDR RAM

160 GB HDD
nVidia 8400 GS (worked about half the time, and bluescreens were a constant issue gaming)

Spec on the current rig:

Athlon 64 X2 4400+ @ 2.2 Ghz

2 GB DDR RAM
2x 250GB HDD (one of which is failing), with added SSD coming in on Christmas

MSI R7 250

A8N-VM CSM Motherboard

Were I to get anything else for my parents, it would probably be a Chromecast so they can watch basketball games without me having to drag my laptop out to connect to WatchESPN and Campus Insiders.

True story with that 8400 GS: I still have trust issues with Nvidia products due to how shitty that card was.

I would get my Mum/Dad a Amazon Echo ($179.99; http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00X4WHP5E/ref=aw_lnk_sm_/187-9433414-3132317?aid=aw_palldept&apid=2247706962&arc=1201&arid=0P8BDBVG121N81X7D4E0&asn=center-4&ref=aw_lnk_sm_ha_dr_nn) because I feel that it would be genuinely useful for them to just be able to talk to Alexa and get instant results; just saying things like 'Do I need an umbrella today?' or 'How long do you boil potatoes for?' can make all the difference. But if this wouldn't be possible, I would get my dad a Wocket Smart Wallet, but it hasn't been released on Amazon yet :(

I would want to give my mom a Huawei smart watch. The reason why is because my dad really wants a smart watch but he's not allowed to get one because my mom thinks they're stupid and doesn't see the point in having a computer on your wrist. If I got it for my mom, it might convince her to let my dad get an Apple Watch like he wanted.

This holiday season, if I could afford it, I would get my mother a new laptop. The HP DV6000 she has was second hand from my sister, who got it in 2006. Since then I’ve had to replace the hard drive twice (now it has a 120GB 840 EVO), tripled the RAM to 3GB, glued / taped the broken parts back on, replaced the battery twice, power adapter twice, and reattach the TFT LCD after it got knocked off. It’s trusty enough, and now is more reliable, but it has a 32bit Intel Core Duo, which is a dead end in terms of future use, tied with its 15.4” 6.2LB bulk. She deserves better, and I’ve been hunting for a good deal on a replacement laptop since 2011.

I'm not sure about how this will work for Australia with shipping etc so I'm going to aim a bit cheaper just to be safe

Sonos Play 1: http://www.amazon.com/SONOS-PLAY-Compact-Speaker-Streaming/dp/B00EWCUK98/

I would have picked the Connect so my Dad could plug in a Turntable but it goes a bit too far above the price which is unfortunate. Anyways, my parents already have a Play 1 because of my recommendation and they love it. Though as any Sonos convert would know more speakers is always better. That's kinda the main selling point of these things. So another Play 1 so that Mum could keep listening to internet radio when she moves through the house would be a pretty awesome gift.

I just realised there is no shipping to Australia from Amazon for Sonos gear. So that one is ruled out unless you guys would allow getting it shipped by some other means. Kinda sucks. So beyond that as an idea probably the second best option is a tablet. Mum already has an iPad, Dad doesn't but keeps borrowing Mums so he can check sports scores and so on. If the Sonos isn't an option (and it would appear that's the case) then this is the second best thing I can think of.

My family is actually already quite techy; I just inhereted it. However, my grandma, not so much. She does however use a Mac. Thus, a Time Capsule. Is it a glorified NAS that costs too much with a pretty good Wi-Fi basestation? Yes. But damn is it worth it to make sure that every file is backed up constantly.

On a seperate note, my home has a large array of Sonos Amps connected to various speakers throughout the house. And Linus, I love your praise of the Sonos, and it is awesome, but it does have flaws outside of price and options. Firstly (and minorly): album artwork just straight fails about half the time. Second: updates regularly cause the system to go down for far too long. Third, and very major: the highly touted feature of using NAS storage for music just straight breaks half the time. Sometimes it can't read the data, and you have to go rename the server, clear all the files, add th files, change the name again, clear all the files again, and re-add the files again for it to work. It doesn't understand most metadata outside of basic stuff (lyrics, sound volume +-, artwork, composers, hidden or discarded media, etc. fail).

So, is it the best I've found so far? Yes. Is it generally awesome? Yes. But is it the be-all end-all? Nope.

So, given the age of the product (pushing three years now if I'm right) I would have appreciated a more in depth, less rushed and surface review.

probably hifiman he-400i. My friend needs a new pair of headphones, his current ones are not ideal, and uncomfortable.

its $299 as of this writing, so if it's too expensive, then I would get my other friend a moto g because he uses a flip phone.

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

This would be for my gma and gpa. They like looking at pictures on the desktop I built them and getting rid of the old garbage IBM laptop that they had before I never had the budget to get a monitor so I had to use one of my old ones.

Well, my brother has no clue when it comes to computer.

He has a PC and uses cheap earpiece all the time (the ones you get when you buy phones..). While he loves watching movies, he using earpiece all the time and not getting the full experience. Occasionally, he enjoys gaming as well (Witcher 3, LoL and a few others).

The following speakers are chosen because of their well known reliability and quality product.

Either of these will make a great gift for my brother.  :D

I would buy my mom some kind of speaker system for the living room TV. I bought her a Chromecast a few months ago, since she already had an iPad. It took a while to get her used to it, but now she's loving it and I know she would love to have some better speakers than just the tv ones. I know she likes to keep it clean and simple and doesn't want a bunch of speakers laying around, so probably some kind of a soundbar.

Hey Linus,

I would buy a benQ monitor for my girlfriend since I already got her a pc but she lives in the UK and I live in The Netherlands so it's a bit of a problem sometimes, I wanted to buy this for her so we would play games together so the distance feels less of a problem. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00SJANIWA/ref=mp_s_a_1_4/277-3768559-4339366?qid=1449132581&sr=1-4π=AC_SX110_SY165

This one seemed like a good deal :)

An ultrawide monitor for my dad, he's been running his own business for the past few years, he's been working on his spreadsheets with just a tiny 4:3 monitor.

Also, after giving him my netflix password it physically pains me to see him attempt to split screen it along side one of his spreadsheets.

http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-25UM57-25-Inch-LED-lit/dp/B00V8FAWC2

I think this'd give the old guy a bit of a break and let him unwind whilst he toils through his work.

Thanks for the opportunity though guys, and great videos  :)
