First Gaming PC

I have been saving my pennies for a while now and after a friend decided to let me basically have a GPU (a decent one mind you) I decided to finally bite the bullet and get a PC.

I have bought all the parts and I was wondering how well I had done on my selection. As well as a bit of advice on how well this should weather future upgrades.

Is there anything I should be aware about the parts that I have picked that I may not know?

From what I understand, getting one stick of RAM with plans to upgrade later should be done with the same model and type of memory. I didn't have money for a dual channel kit, that won't affect performance later will it?

Partslist: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Q42c8d

CPU:                Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core
CPU Cooler:    Cooler Master 212 EVO
Motherboard:   MSI B150 Gaming M3
RAM:                8GB Kingston Black (1x8GB) DDR4-2133
GPU:                Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5
Case:               Fractal Design Define R4
Storage:          Sandisk SSD PLUS 240GB
                       WD Caviar Blue 1TB
PSU:                Corsair CX600M

Thanks for the advice in advance!

It will do the Trick. But dont expect Ultra Settings. The GPU is too old for that.

The PSU isnt meant for Gamingrigs though.

The Rest is fine.

Seems like a very balanced set up.
one stick of ram is fine, since your gaming will depend on your GPU's ram. With that said you have room to upgrade in the future.

Should I look to replace the PSU later on? If so, should I look at changing the Wattage when I decide to upgrade GPU?

And I already knew not to expect a GTX 980ti level performance with the GPU going in. It was in the system I helped him build, he gave it to me for cheep as a result.

500W is fine. CX are Tier 3 PSU´s. I recommend a Tier 1 for a Gaming PC. You should upgrade it if you get a faster Card later.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by Tiers. Can you give me an example please?

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by Tiers. Can you give me an example please?

Tier Breakdown:

  • Tier 1 provides the best quality power, great for overclocking, super high-end systems, and bragging rights.  The best of the best. Very good longevity.
  • Tier 2 offers very good quality power output, and great reliability.  Highly recommended for use in new systems.
  • Tier 2b contains units that almost made Tier 2, but may not have quite as good quality output(still very good), or may not last as long.  Recommended for systems not expected to run 24/7 for several years.
  • Tier 3 power supplies fully meet all ATX requirements for power output quality, but don't have as good of power output quality as above tiers. No reason to replace one if you have one, and they're still good choices for most systems. (Not Gaming PC´s)
  • Tier 4 units may have some problems, such as being unable to deliver rated power at higher temperatures, or being slightly out of ATX spec on power output quality.  Not recommended to buy except in situations where you will not be stressing it, or expecting it to last for more than a few years.  If you have one, you can probably keep using it unless you're experiencing problems.
  • Tier 5 power supplies are NOT RECOMMENDED.  If you have one, you should strongly consider replacing it ASAP.  These can damage your computer, and often cannot put out the power that they're rated for. If a brand name is listed here, then all models from that brand name are considered to be Tier 5, except for those specific models listed above.

Oh! That makes a lot more sense, thank you.

So I should try and go to a Tier 1-2 Yes? Or would you say I should go for a Tier 1?

The one i use is a Tier 1 PSU for example. But you will do fine with almost any Tier 1 PSU. You should choose EVGA, Seasonic or Corsair.

If you plan to upgrade to a Highend Card in the Future, i would go Tier 1  with 700W+. If you dont, a decent Tier 2 500W would be enough. Gaming PC´s stress the PSU alot. The better the PSU, the better for your System.

So kind of like a car with the better the fuel you put in it, the cleaner the engine should run. (If the analogy works anyway ^^;;)

For now will the CX600M work for what I need? I can't really afford to get another PSU right now.

no need for a hyper212 on a locked chip, default heatsink will do fine.

Could of spent more money on a GPU, but still its a decent investment incase you decide to upgrade to an unlocked chip anytime soon.

Well...You can't really beat paying $17 for a decent card with the base for a better GPU later. And I can always toss on a better CPU later on down the line.

I'm not a "HAVE TO RUN ULTRA A 100000FPS!!!" Person. 45FPS on Medium is good enough for me. I just want a PC that can play games well and let me play them decently well.

Yes. But have a better PSU in mind for the Future.

Okay, thank you for your advice and help! It is much appreciated! I'll definitely keep the PSU as a higher priority to look at in quality.

Starting my gaming PC build with some of the parts. Didn't have time to install everything before work (I came in a bit early to get some help since I work in a College IT Dept.).

Super excited!
