You guys have to stop pushing pointless videos for the sake of a video a day. I wish you would take your time and actually make good videos consistently rather than pointless filler videos such as these two

I thinking about getting dual X5570s. Any thoughts on how it will perform? It will be paired with a GTX 980 and 16GB RAM on a 10809 monitor. Also is it worth it to buy a PCI-E card with SATA 3 Ports so I don't have to use the on board SATA 2 ports. I am also looking for a cheap sound card because I do not think the on board audio on a server board will be to good. Thank you for you help.

My Work in Progress PC http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/522048-xeon-build/ <-- That PC was built but never booted:(

My Work in Progress PC 2.0 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/540583-xeon-build-20-code-name-xenox (Hopefully this one boots.)

depends on if you can find a server board that can fit all that, has to have standard power, fit in a case, the rite placement of pci slots and a pci express x16 witch is harder than you think to find. good luck

I looked through the first page of posts to see if this was mentioned so sorry if it was mentioned already.

The memory population wasn't ideal. The board has 6 sockets, 3 per CPU. That gen of MB uses triple channel memory, so 3 chips per bank not 2. So the performance was crippled right off the bat.

Second, the PCIe slot was meant for a riser card which wouldn't have the clearance problem with the cap and power connector. However, this would create a new challenge with securing the addon cards and video card as they would be rotated 90 degrees from the desktop orientation. So for this type of build, you might want to stick with a server case with horizontal slots for proper video card and expansion card mounting.

It is not uncommon to have important mounting holes in nonstandard locations for server MBs. Have a fair supply of the white push-in t-slot type MB supports on hand. Clip off the t-slot locking pin under the flat foot and snap it into the MB screw hole. It won't secure the board from lifting up but it will prevent it from contacting the MB tray and shorting out.

Lastly, many server MBs have onboard RAID. It might be worth combining SATA/SAS ports in RAID0 to regain some storage performance.

im gona use this power supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153174

got the motherboard in today, still waiting on cpus and ram,

little update on this MoBo is on this model the audio ports have been removed, on supermicro site it says it has audio but maby for this model the cut it out of assembly since its a server, lucky it has a pci express x8 for a audio card.

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon1333/5100/X7DCA-L.cfm

as of the cpu power, it only has one cpu 8pin and a 24pin, idk this mobo can work with the x5450 120tdp, i got the e5450 80tdp just to be sure, supermicro does not mention it cant do the 125tdp.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111832673738?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

so regular power supplies work with with MoBo and also the wholes are micro atx with the board size being a little bigger (10in x10in).

also the board came with backplates ;)

also the the spacing between the cpu mounting holes is 38.1mm x 81.28mm provided by intel pdf files found online (lga 771)

i also want to remind people before you go buy a dell or HP motherboard check and make sure that board has drivers for windows 7 or windows 10.

thats why i went with supermicro because i can find all the info on there site with drivers and manuals,

will report back once i get the rest and try and post then get a higher watt psu for windows 7 install and see how that works, but so far i like this board, i would recommend picking it up before they are all gone, if it doesnt work you lose 30bucks, big deal (only 10 left)

Where did you buy this MoBo?

I live in Germany, meaning that the amazing prices you guys are discussing are kinda out of reach. Anyone from Europe doing this?

BTW, I can get this MoBo for €69

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon3000/X58/X8STi-F.cfm

The main problem is that the PCIe x16 and x8 are very close to each other. Anyone having good experience using risers?

Many thanks

Anyone find any heatsink ideas for the 771 sockets? I don't care if it needs minor modifications. I have two e5440s and plan to BSEL mod them to 3.4Ghz. I don't know if the stock heatsinks will work with the overclock.

I was thinking about taking two DELL FD841s and rigging some fans to them. What do you guys think?

thats probably your best bet, i  have a machine shop i can use so i bought these, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA66Z28H0869 , and in testing i ziptied them to the motherboard #pullalinus and then i made new brackets for them. other then that the ones you found are the best ive seen that are acualy made for 771 socket

okay so board is in a thermatake core v21

this board does not have all stand mounting points but 4 of them line up so its attached enough lol (http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon1333/5100/X7DCA-L.cfm)

have a 850evo 250gb and a proper power supply and sound card. ive tryed to get a graphics card working but its not giving me a image, tryed 560ti, 760. so im now tring to update the bios but i need to format a usb stick to DOS and update it that way, hopefully it works.

the one thing i would have done different was do a pci sound card and and used the other pci express x8 for a sata 3 controller card since the board only has sata 2

If anyone is still running the x58 platform with one of the original i7s, the 6-core xeons are real beasts at cheap price points. Definitely worth an upgrade.

They also run significantly cooler at 95w tdp. (Compared to the 1366 desktop variants.)

1.26v @ 4.2ghz, 1.31v @ 4.4ghz, p6x58d-e as mobo

Yep, but the motherboard is difficult and costly to find. The one which will allow you to overclock it.

EVGA SR-2 / 2x Intel Xeon X5675 4.4Ghz OC / 24GB EEC 1800Mhz OC/ AMD RX570 / Enermax Evoliution 1050W / Main RAID 0: 2x256GB 840EVO SSD / BackUp(1) Raid 5: 3x2TB WD HDD / BackUp(2) 8x2TB / Dell U2412M / Dell U2312HM

okay problem fixed, you need to update your bios on the supermicro x7dca-L by using DOS bootable usb. this video will show you how

then copy the bios files you downloaded form supermicro then make a folder named x7dca and unzip the files to that folder

next boot off the usb DOS will come up then type

cd x7dca

dir

flash x7dcal1.215

then you are set

let the flash finish and then in bios go to advance, pci something and their should be an option to change the video, select other

and now my windows doesn't boot so im going to reinstall in the morning, hopefully have some fps with a gtx 760 for you guys and maybe i cant grab a trial of cinebench and put up that score too

Correct me if Im wrong here but wouldnt it be cheaper and better to go with LGA775 and get a cheap cor2quad extreme processor like the QX6700?

If you are talking about about one quad core cpu vs two quad core cpus than no. It would be easier than find a server board and all the other crap you have to go though. But you would have half the cores. In terms of gaming, older games (and most current ones too) don't use many more than four anyways.

A cheap alternative to a qx6700 could be something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-LGA-771-to-775-Adapters-for-Xeon-Mod-with-one-Intel-Xeon-Inside-sticker-/151905311995?hash=item235e431cfb:g:DOwAAOSwNphWYcYt

I got really excited about this for an actual server. I found this one and I jumped on it http://www.ebay.com/itm/151898352493, Not realizing it only holds 2.5" hard drives and it didn't include any trays. I'm going to see if I can gut the inside a little bit to make it accept 3.5" hard drives. wish me luck!

Finally got my system up and running. Using a HP XW8600 motherboard with two E5440s. The board just bearly fits in my Antec P280. There is a connector thats "LOOKS" like a 6-pin pcie on the motherboard, but its not. Its for the FD-DIMMs. You can use a regular PSU, but you have to repin a 6-pin pcie connector.

look guys you could do this for less and have similar results by doing it with a older quad core but i just wanted to do this for fun

im probably just going to sell this to my friend for him to use as a 3D cad computer in his shop

heres some benchmarks

1.) intel xeon E5450 x2 3.0ghz, gtx 760    2.)intel i5 4670k 4.4ghz, gtx 760

gtx 760 oc 1202mhz

cinebench r15  1) 558  2)472

rome 2 (very high)  1) avg57 min42 max78  2) avg55 min36 max72

battlefront (high)  1) avg55 min38 max66  2) avg58 min50 max69

the witcher 3 (medium)  1) avg39 min34 max 52  2) avg43 min 36 max59

vermintide (medium)  1) avg37 min25 max51  2) avg77 min49 max123

overall not bad, rome 2 was faster on the dual xeon E5450 but that is a cpu intensive game, and better cinebench score

this is what i bought
