Wont be that crisp until I get my camera upgrade, his FS7 is far better than my camera

However with the A7rII and similar rokinon glass I should have similar image quality,

nope... thats not how it works in my family... i technically have enough money to get a decent lens... But they wont let me buy stuff... even if its my money... they have to approve its "worth it" And thats usually a no... usually if the thing is under £20 it is usually ok, but over that, its nearly always a no...

That's the problem... I don't have any friends who are into anything I like! Not even tech.. And definitely not photography or videography....

So none of them have any good cameras... Because their parents just buy a cheap point and shoot[emoji23] Or a not bad DSLR like mine...

OK this entire afternoon was one long meeting, a reception and an annual dinner event all non-stop, and it was slow posting here using my phone.  I guess @ShadowCaptain has given you some great tips and advice.

Here is an explanation of Focus Peaking and how it helps you achieve better focus.  But becareful, there are some conditions where it may not work, especially if your scene is under or overexposed for the camera to pick up a good contrast.

http://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=56246.0

Manual focusing a DSLR lens for video, and relying on the 3" or so LCD screen on the back is not an easy task.  There are three ways to help improve that.

  • Get an external field monitor that has a larger screen and has focus assist features.  However you already said you don't have the money to buy this.
  • Buy a LCD loupe then, it's a lot cheaper and a good model comes with a magnifier.  You can find good Chinese imitations of good brands on eBay. See image below for an example of what a loupe looks like.
  • Magic Lantern and activate Focus Peaking.  Combine FP with a loupe will make it even easier.

Another piece of gear I recommend you have in your bag, if you plan to shoot a lot of videos: a tape measure.  A big part of filming is in the planning.  You can do a rough measure of the distance from your camera's sensor plane to where your subject is going to be and mark out how you will focus the scene.  Unfortunately most 18-55 kit lenses lack a focus scale on the body.  But if you have a lens with a focus scale, a tape measure will be useful to have.  Additionally if you don't have a focus scale and tape measure, before you actually start filming, use some masking tape and a marker (I'm assuming you don't have a follow focus either) and mark on your lens where the focus should be when the subject is at the starting point and where it should be at the end point.

Getting many of the things right in camera (aside from color grading, because recording a flat image makes post processing easier), getting things right like focus pulling and stabilization, will help produce a better quality in post processing.  I'm not personally fond of using unsharp masks or sharpening plugins to make a slightly blurred or out of focus scene appear sharper in post.

Hi,

I have a problem with my DSLR Video. It doesnt look good. There is no detail in the faces, and it looks like DV video.

Here are some sample clips:

here is the raw cinestyle clip

and here is the graded version

If someone can help me fix it, i will be grateful...

Thanks
Gershy13

it looks like that likely because of a low bitrate. Install magic lantern and turn up the bitrate ant that massively improves the quality. Also you might want to stick to the 180degree rule where your shutter speed is double the framerate you are shooting at. A good lens also helps. Heres a video i took with my t5i which is more or less the same camera as yours with the bitrate cranked up 1.5x.

i have tried it with a higher bitrate, but it still looks bad... your video looks amazing.. but thats because ur using a 24-105 L!

Thanks... im looking to get a decent LCD Viewfinder... i will have a look on ebay... ill try focus peaking next time...

When i record stuff close up, its better, when its far away, it looks fuzzy...

Focus peaking is really nice for pulling focus

hmm probably your lens, I would look into some cheap canon FD glass and adapter
