DSLR Video doesnt look up to standard...

Short focal length lenses are hard to manually focus without some sort of assist.  A 55mm lens basically goes into infinity focus after a distance of 3-4 meters.  And these newer lenses which do not have a hard stop for the focus wheel, it's not easy to tell when you are at infinity focus or have actually pushed the lens a bit beyond.

 

Most 18-55 kit lenses do not have these kind of markings, which are actually very useful for video shooters.

yeah.... i was shooting at 55mm the whole way... but i was using the 18-55 which has a hard stop.. and it didnt reach infinity.... infinity was blurry...

I think i need to buy the 50mm 1.8 STM.... That would have been perfect for that... and stopped down to about f8 the DoF would have been ok to work with...

 

As for a loupe, im looking at these two, and have asked the sellers if they use the tripod thread, as i dont like the ones which stick to the camera, because that means i cant close my screen...

The other ones, like GGS, are expensive at £30... my eyes are ok, so i dont think i need the dioptre...

I also need a lens hood for my lenses... I kind like the ones which look like flowers.... but i couldnt find any for the 55-250 and 50 1.8.... i found some cheap japan ones for the 18-55, and a legit canon one for the 10-18... but i would like a cheap one...

$14 is a bit too much, and im from the uk, so i cant buy on BH... And that only fits the 18-55...

If I could shoot this on nothing but a 550D and a 650D way back in college, I think the solution to your problem is not 'buy a new camera'.

I don't think the OP will get a new camera, seems he/she was just wondering about the quality of his footage.  But I attribute that to a flaw in the filming technique instead of the camera hardware.

I think you could be a bit more aggressive, but be careful as low bitrate DSLR video falls apart fast if pushed TOO far

Make the shadows tend towards blue, and the highlights / mid tons towards orange - this can really help with the cinematic look,

Gamma = Midtones (middle gray levels)

Gain = Highlights/Whites
