[Patched]AMD drivers locking fan speed to 20% and killing GPUS. WATCH YOUR CARDS

Syntaxvgm

I can confirm some Hawaii cards are affected. One of my 290's, even though water cooled, still uses the stock blower fan to cool the VRMs etc. and is plugged into the fan header on the card. Twice (just after installing crimson the first and 2nd time), I had the blower fan on this card randomly ramp up to 100% for no reason. Was able to override it by setting it to 30% constant in MSI AB.

It just struck me now, after reading that some people had this happen after installing crimson, that this was a result of this bug.

I hope (and assume) the fix will just be an update to the driver and not require reinstalling. Took me a while to set up the custom overdrive profiles for a bunch of games. Don't want to have to redo all that again so soon. :/

AMD said that it'll be a hotfix.

Yesterday i got a big crash where my screen went totally distorted and i got a feeling it could have very well have been the Crimson drivers. i might just go back to 15.7 since that was perfectly stable for me.

Ouch, luckily I'm under water.

And yeah the biggest surprise is that a number of cards actually died... Maybe the VRMs cooked, but they have temp probes and the vBIOS should probably switch the card off if a component overheats...

I think today's update is the most appropriate use for the term "Hotfix"

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Is this a problem for my HD5670?

I need a better GPU

I have a 5670 near me...unplugged..still alive..and I uh...at some point ripped off the fan's wires...I did not notice it. I proceeded playing some LoL...at some point in the game I opened HW monitor to check temps. 87 degrees on the GPU...that was an instant "kill the power" button press. It's still alive so I don't think you'd have an issue with it.

Play some games and monitor temps and fan speeds, see if they go wild.

87 is not all that hot danger wise and league is not all that taxing especially if you aren't playing that one map and you are locked at 60, which if I'm not mistaken is default.

Yeah, but it's me we're talking about :) Max settings and no FPS cap..since it's pretty horrible when it drops during fights.

It sits about 50c at 28% fan which is as low as I can set it. I think I will be fine.

I'm calling bull on some of these reports, the 200 series is able to deal with 95C, and silicon can at an absolute maximum operate at 115C though the card's life may be effected.

The bugfix version of Crimson is available as a beta driver download from the AMD website. This is the press release for it.

By the way, if I manually set the fan speed in Afterburner that seems to fix the issue. Was playing Fallout 4 the other day and my card was cruising at 80 degrees Celsius, because the fan speed was at 20. Upped the speed to 70 and it cooled the card down to around 55 degrees Celsius.

lets not get ahead of ourselves.... when u compare nvidia and amd drivers in 2015.... 95% of the time amds drivers were much better, more stable, had less issues than nvidia ones. Yes nvidia released more drivers than amd. but they were generaly worse quality then the ones from amd. Just went through nvidia reddit page and nvidia forums and u wouldnt believe how many issues nvidia users are having with their cards and drivers. Amd users have issues aswell but not ass many. The way i see it crimson is an exeption. Every good driver engineer will have bad day someday. (my opinion)

Lolzors nope.  NV outnumbers AMD by something like 2:1 users so that might be why you see more "issues" coming from the NV side than AMD.  NV drivers are far more polished than AMD ones which is why Quadro is universally what professionals use over FirePro and same applies to the enthusiast side.  I'll cite AMD's  years of frame metering issues that SLI had no issues with.

Seems the hotfix fixed the issue for me....for now. My temps weren't too crazy but they were quite a bit higher than usual. I was getting about 45c AT IDLE before.  Very odd. cepxWml.png

Well if RMA's or replacements don't occur AMD's sales over the short term will skyrocket due everyone with now dead cards (and not knowing the difference why it died) will be buying new cards.

AMD will be like "Hey our sales are up we wont have to shut down now"   (Disclaimer: no hate was intended or implied, just throwing out some humor here)

I know most are sick of these video's now.... but not everyone has seen this variant, so I'm posting it.

Embedded is blocked, click to watch on YT

Bit late to the party, but I'm happy for everyone that the fixed driver is out, I'd be very unhappy if I was affected by that issue.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
