[Patched]AMD drivers locking fan speed to 20% and killing GPUS. WATCH YOUR CARDS

Recommended Posts

my R9 295x2 is so far unaffected. running latest drivers...

Hawaii may or may not be affected. Ill retest with my HD 7950 boost.... its basically a 280. Maybe its just GCN 1.0?

I think this might be an issue with Overdrive as that's the only thing that has direct access to the fan speed and since most people don't use it it's only occurring here and there. Bad thing is, supposedly once you activate it, you "renounce" your warranty :/

Ever heard of not all headphones are closed back? Ever heard of GPU temps? Ever heard of common sense?

That doesn't fucking make sense. So what about the people who do have closed back headphones? Or you insinuating that everyone should get open back headphones? I don't know about you, but I don't monitor my temps constantly, some people actually just try to play games without useless widgets and crapware. It seems to me that you sir are the one without common sense.

Also most people don't have the side of their computer to their head. I can't tell the difference between 0% and 100% fan speed because its under my desk and makes little to no noise to begin with. Stop sound whoring your desktop and do that in csgo instead.

Can confirm this. Wife's 7870 was locked at 30% max fan speed. Had to use Afterburner to unlock it.

i have a hd 7950 in my secundary rig and it was fine with no fan problem.

in crimson you must be sure to left the litle tab on fan speed in off position, in this position it will assume the auto fan curve in the GPU bios or afterburner settings, if that little nob is on the fan speed will be locked to 30% by default

You do realize that not all card are loud right? There are some very quiet aftermarket coolers out there. Without any other noise going on the fans on my 980 Matrix Platinum are still only slightly noticeable when I put them up to 70%. Even at 100% they don't make much noise. The only way I could ever tell what speed my fans were running at while playing a game would be to use something like Afterburner. All of ASUS' DCU style coolers run pretty quietly, as do several others out there. Unless someone has one of the jet engine stock coolers it would be easy to miss.

Taking it a little personal, aren't we? FYI, my computer is on the floor and I can definitely tell the difference between my gpu fans running at 30% (in my case) and anything that's higher whilst gaming. Maybe if people didn't listen to their music at ear bleeding levels they might actually be able to notice the difference.

Well, this isn't good at all. AMD needs to be attracting more customers, now more than ever. This also doesn't help the "AMD GPUs = volcanoes" stigma either. Hope they can rectify the issue quick. :/

Explains why my cards were throttling good job I monitor this shit with my G19, reinstalled the driver and checked fans all seems well now. Also forcing a profile through AB just incase. Warned a bunch of my friends too. Nvidia has done this before, but that doesn't excuse AMD doing the same. Shame on you AMD, I hope to see anyone with a burnt out card replaced.

In the new Crimson overdrive, the only options/choice I have for fan control is to set the target fan speed %. There is no on or off toggle/option that you speak of. Not for me anyways. I'm running two 290's.

I really think they should be called out, this should have never been a normal driver update but should have remained a beta driver. It basically killed my Fallout 4 performance (the thing it was supposed to fix btw) with freezing exactly like it did on the previous beta which leads me to believe they actually didn't changed a single thing from that *.11 beta driver and just slapped the fucking Crimson shit interface on top.

I am seriously annoyed at AMD right now.

Ever heard of not all headphones are closed back? Ever heard of GPU temps? Ever heard of common sense?

why not stop assuming every person thinks like you do?

1. what about ear buds? huh pretty sure majority of people use those. Not everyone has headphones, be it closed or open.

2. who in their right mind runs some gpu temp overlay when playing games.

3. just because you are sensitive to noise does not mean everyone is the same.

4. what if their cpu cooler makes more noise? with high rpm fans or something. In that situation you may not be able to immediately point out that your gpu fans aren't ramping up.

5. what if the game you are playing is not intensive and your fan curve was not even supposed to go above 40% but that was enough to overheat the card? hmmmm. so many things can happen. there are people that prefer a more silent system and set low fan speeds even for high temps.

granted anyone trying beta drivers should have been monitoring their systems for abnormalities, but you can hardly count on people to be smart.

It's like AMD wants to keep their reputation of burning their cards alive.

ORRRR maybe they got tired of the shit about their reference cooler being a jet engine so they purposely limited the fan speed. This is next level revenge.

I wonder what is going on though. I have no problem with my 290. If you activate manual fanspeed in overdrive, it autos to 24% (on my system). Maybe people activated it, and never did anything about it.

r9 390 with this bug here, played ac syndicate and was surprised the card was so silent, alt tabbed to check temp, 95°C with fans at 30%, got crimson on an htpc with a 280x and it has yet to happen on that one i think.

Good thing my stock fan curve was already stuck at 40% due to shitty stock settings and I've been running on a custom fan profile. From my experience, Crimson has been a reasonable performance boost with no drawbacks.

That being said, that's only because I spent time on my OC including a custom fan curve. For AMD to release something like this that causes people running their cards at stock problems is ridiculous. I wonder what's going to happen to all the people with burnt cards because of this. Seems like they only tested for Hawaii and newer architecture if the 280 and 280x are having problems but 290 and newer are fine.

r9 fury : no problems been playing since the driver release : heroes of the storm, battlefront , fallout 4.

The chance for a card to fry are very low unless you mess with OC settings, because it should thermal throttle at 85*C or shut down

I also have this issue, but for me, it just sets itself to the last manual setting I've inputted in the Crimson software. Thankfully, I played a bit with the settings when I first installed it and manually put it at 100% just to see what it sounded like, before putting it back on Auto.

Even if I set it back to Auto, once I reboot the computer, it will be back to that manual setting(100%)... The only way I found around it, is just use MSI afterburner with a custom fan curve, and have it start with windows.
