I Linus'ed a router.

iamdarkyoshi

I am thinking these should be come a thing. First I Linus'ed a PC fan: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/477593-i-linused-a-pc-fan/

And now I Linus'ed a router.

Story: My F@H rig needed a way to communicate with the series of tubes full of cats, also known as the internet. My newest WIFI card is officially supported with OSes up to windows XP. So obviously that will not work.

Two other machines in my house are using routers flashed with DDWRT which allows me to use them as wireless bridges. I thought I might as well do this for this PC, but I do not have any power supplies for this crappy old router. I thought I might as well use the PSU in the PC, but then I decided to just put the whole router in the PC. So I did. This PC has slots for screws to slide into for the optical drives, so I took my router apart, soldered wires to the power connector, and then here is the fun part:

I trimmed the PCB to match the width of the slot.

APn51gp.jpg

The PCB had about 1/2in of ground plane on each side without any power planes or other traces running through the middle (modern PCBs often have multiple layers of traces) so I just trimmed it with my tablesaw. Then I just slid it in like a disk drive. The front fan keeps it cooled down.

Another nice thing about this router is that its antennas are connected to a standard wireless card. So the antennas could be mounted in a place other than the back of the board.

IvVXmYh.jpg

Powering the router was easy enough, it runs on 5V at like 2A with a derpy power connector, which is why I did not have a power supply for it.

j8McM4t.jpg

So how does this interface to the PC itself? The answer is very simple:

gd5QEWH.jpg

And it works! Would I suggest doing this on your PC? No, because it is stupid. But it works!

I thoroughly approve of this

Edit: forgot about the fan trimming. Might have to give that a go with one of my broken cougars since my case is the same way

one more habdy little mod that can make this look prettier... Ive done something similar in the past with and old router myself but I also took a gigabit NIC and removed the jack on it and put a 180 degree (vertical) port on the card and it allowed me to run the network connection completely on the inside. I also built a transfer panel and it allowed me to attach all the network ports in a 5.25 bay. I ;ile the built in router for small lan parties and stuff. Not exactly practical and that is part of what makes it awesome to do.

Love this mod haha

It's definitely different.

Also that case is set up for some very abnormal airflow compared to the average case.

It is set up for running folding@home. The case has one intake, a 120mm 1800RPM fan on the bottom front. I have it shrouded to lead into the GPU. Any other fans provide negative pressure to assist the front bottom fan in bringing in cool air. I do agree, it is a bit odd, but the PC stays under 50 degrees

You are going to love this. It has a core2duo and an HD 6950

I'd fold on my second rig, but I might have destroyed the vrms on the motherboard. I knew the 8120 was going to kill the board in less than a year, but it lasted longer than I thought. If it could handle the cpu under load for folding, I'd have my 680 and 8120 folding right now. (I fold on my second rig when it starts to get colder since it keeps my room warm and is cheaper than the space heater we have)

Is that a HP Workstation X-something with two dual-core Xeons inside? If it is, I have one exactly like it, at least the case looks the same, it's 100% functional, lying in the garage gathering dust. What should I do with it? Are there any valuable uses for stuff like that?

its the single CPU core2duo workstation. I really want the dual cpu version though. I would suggest using it as a mediaserver or fileserver or something. Xeons do a good job with this

It has some shitty, ancient ATI VGA with the weirdest DVI connector I've ever seen, so in order to run it I'd need to find an adapter, it's got only small pins, but there is a spot where there's no pin, I'm not sure how to describe it

Yeah, it's something of that sort, nevertheless, to run it I need to find an adapter like that, and I'm not even sure how to google it since it's not... common, at least I haven't seen one before :P
