Planning new build, creation date: To Be Decided

Dudenstein

I'm planning a new future build because my current 2500k/560ti build is starting to chug a tad. I'm in no rush to replace my current computer so this is just a planning thread where I can keep updating and balancing my next computer until I have the true desire and more importantly funds to actually take the leap. I'm thinking a maximum $2500US budget for this and I'll be gaming and using this for editing.

I will have to go Nvidia for the GPU because I'm going to be using Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro so I'm going to need the CUDA cores. In terms of gaming, I will have at least 2 screens, possibly 3, but that will be more for actual work. I will be gaming on a single screen, at the moment 1080p but potentially possibly upgrading my primary screen to a larger and higher res monitor is which is to be decided.

In terms of aesthetics, I'm looking for a clean professional look without a widowed side panel. So something very plain and no way to see the interior without taking out the side panel. With that said, since there wont be a window, the internal components would not have to match in color and so forth thus in this situation it'll be function over fashion. I would like it to be as silent as possible so sound dampening material would be a major plus.

(I'll be putting current gen components in this planning thread and will be replacing the parts as better ones are released until zero hour)

CPU: i7 3930K LGA 2011 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116492

GPU: GTX 680 but undecided whether to go ASUS DCII or another one.

How much video editing are you planning to be doing? If it's just YouTube gameplays, a 3770K is adequate and there isn't a huge leap between the 3770K and 2500K. As for motherboards, my personal preference are for the Asus P8Z77 boards, in particular the V series. They're not everyones cup of tea with their color scheme however they're a bloody good board. Other options though would include ASRock Extreme's or the MSI M-Power.

With your GPU, I'd actually step down to a 670 and go with a 4GB card which will offer you better performance with 3 screens than a 2GB 680 - I've seen this from personal experience. I know EVGA make a 4GB 670 as a friend has one and he hasn't complained about it.

Your RAM is more than you'll likely need however it isn't that bad however the same can't be said for your PSU. With this build you'd be fine with a 600w PSU. Have a look at some of Seasonic and Silverstone's offerings.

With your cooler, I'd look at the H220 when it's released however also take note of the upcoming video by Linus where he benchmarks all of the closed loop coolers except for the 220.

Storage - you don't really need a 512GB drive for boot. I'd look at 256, 128 or a 128 and a 60 (boot and storage). If you're not writing great quantaties of data to it then have a look at the Samsung 840 range - they've got slower writes however you don't really write a lot of data to a boot disk anyway. Otherwise if you need something more high perfromance, have a look at the Intel 520, OCZ Vector or Samsung 840 Pro.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/E8aI This should work for anything you might want to throw at it. You can even upgrade to 2 680s if you wanted to in the long run. If you're not going with big time editing, then I would agree with windspeed36 - going for something less powerful will be fine.

My Rig:

  • CPU: 1090T@4.1ghz
  • GPU: Gigabyte 7870
  • MOBO: Crosshair Formula V
  • RAM: 8GB 1333mhz
  • PSU: 650w corsair HX
  • SSD: 120GB Kingston HyperX
  • Sound card: Asus Xonar DX
