WWII officially ended on September 2nd, 1945, with the Japanese signing the surrender documents. The Germans, were of course defeated earlier in '45, but the Pacific Theatre was still part of the overall conflict.

The Paris Peace Treaties of 1947 wrapped up the wars between the allied powers and their non-German European enemies (Italy, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Finland); in 1952, the Allies (except the USSR) signed the Treaty of San Francisco with Japan, and, in 1955, Austria was restored to sovereignty. Germany, however, remained divided—first between the Western powers and the USSR, then (until 1990) into two sovereign Germanies. So the first celebration of German reunification on 3rd October 1990, marks the official end to World War II.

I would argue that German reunification is not required for the official end to the war, assuming both East and West Germany both ended the war before then. So I don't hold the 1990 detail to have any significance whatsoever. Same with Austria being restored to sovereignty. I would therefore see 1952 Treaty of San Francisco as being the last possible "legitimate" date, pedantically speaking :P

 

OT: I think that while Americans do tend to overreact to stuff, did ANYONE see this working out any other way? Americans are super patriotic, and hate all things Nazi (Except for dirtbag racist/evil skinhead neo-nazi's and what not). However, Amazon did get a lot of free publicity out of this.

 

I for one, and definitely going to start watching this show. I can't seem to find it on Amazon.ca. Am I correct in assuming this is another bullshit region-locked "Only on Amazon.com" thing? Anyone know if you can stream the show if you have an Amazon.ca account by logging into Amazon.com?

And actually I can't find any "Nazi" cross , its only the Reich eagle which in my mind represent something like the bald eagle ( dear bird of the USA )

The Reich eagle was based off the Reichsadler or Imperial Eagle that is derived from the Roman Eagle based off the commonly found Golden Eagle in Europe not the Bald Eagle found in North America.

The Reich eagle was based off the Reichsadler or Imperial Eagle that is derived from the Roman Eagle based off the commonly found Golden Eagle in Europe not the Bald Eagle found in North America.

(Just FYI)

I didn't knew what species it was exactly, but I was making a reference of the symbol both eagles represent.

In all seriousness - it is ridiculous that it has continued on as a symbol for hatred when it was used in many religions and philosophy for thousands of years as a symbol of good.  I believe the earliest record of it was like.. 10,000-ish B.C.?  Or something like that.

Blame the neo-nazi groups who keep bringing it back for hate. Plus the swastika as used in other religions isn't the same one as used by Nazi Germany

No really, the only way I can see Amazon coming up with this idea and being all like " hey that's a good idea" is if the person who came up with it and authorised it, wasn't American....and was a bit dim.
