AMD moves all pre-graphics core next gpus to legacy support and they are now Retired

Alongside today’s release of the new Radeon Software Crimson Edition driver set, AMD has published a new page on their driver site announcing that video cards based on the company’s pre-Graphics Core Next architectures have been moved to legacy status. This means that GPUs based on the company’s VLIW5 and VLIW4 architectures – the Evergreen and Northern Islands families – have been retired and will no longer be supported. All of AMD’s remaining supported GPUs are now based on various iterations of the Graphics Core Next architecture.

In their announcement, AMD notes that their pre-GCN GPUs have “reached peak performance optimization” and that the retirement “enables us to dedicate valuable engineering resources to developing new features and enhancements for graphics products based on the GCN Architecture.” Furthermore AMD is not planning on any further driver releases for these cards – the announcement makes no mention of a security update support period – so today’s driver release is the final driver release for these cards.

Opinion - About damn time. We need to toss old graphics architectures out the windows and work on modern ones. VLIW is the past. RISC is the future.

for a second I had a mini panic attack and assumed r9 200 and before
then I actually read the article and ya I think its about time, put their resources towards faster updates and better optimization for newer cards

Surprised it wasn't sooner. The only reason Fermi is still supported by Nvidia, is, well because it's largely what the past 4 gens have been refinements of. HD 5K and 6K are very different from 7K and R9.

Well, this had to happen sooner or later - Nvidia retired Thermi about a year ago or so

No it was pre-fermi, aka. some GTX 4xx and 5xx cards were only included because they were rebrands of the previous architecture. But Fermi itself is still going.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

I switched to AMD once they had the hotter running card...

Then it's time to go back to Nvidia with the Titan grill :D

Oh boy, good thing I've literally just sold my HD5870 on ebay. Not for much, mind you.

(sold for $75, or more precisely, $50+$25 for shipping, remove the paypal fees and that's a total of $72.52, then remove the actual shipping cost out of it, which was $29.24, add the cost of packaging material, another $7.45(large box and some tape).... Which means I actually only made $35.83... If the guy doesn't file a complaint with ebay for some reason, otherwise I will have lost money on this. This card cost me more to ship it, than it made me profits. Why is shipping so damn expensive in Canada, God damn it...)

Fermi!!!! Ahh! It's not called Themi!

You realize why people call it Thermi, right? Because Fermi made the Hawaii GPU look like an ice cube. Fermi was so much hotter than AMD's 290/290x reference cards, that it's insane.

In other words, it's a joke, a play on words :P

Again, that's not a 580. It's a 480.

It didn't actually seem that long ago that the 5870, then the most powerful single GPU until the 480 and also the very first to support DX11 arrived, was launched. Then again, this of course doesn't mean these parts will stop working.

Also, I'm not sure I understand why RISC would be inherently better than VLIW, especially on GPUs.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

580 is GF110 and 480 is GF100 - both are Fermi. Unless you were making some other point?

The point is the picture is wrong and the 580 comes with a different cooler. I know both are Fermi and in fact I'll do you one better, the reason the 580 ran a bit cooler was because GF110 was basically GF100 without some of the pro features like ECC memory and stuff.
