Receiver works, doesnt, then works.

OK, so im having an odd problem.

 

I turn on computer, goes mini displayport to hdmi to receiver to monitor, and HDMI to other montor.

I see windows booting on both.

once windows boots, I only see picture on the monitor not conected to receiver. Howver, about an hour later, the picture will show up on both montiors.

 

Not sure what the problem is, or how to fix it.

I might just try buying a new receiver again, if i can find something good on craigslist.

Sounds like my old Onkyo.  It could be done.  I remember researching and found a bunch of "HDMI fix" videos on certain receivers, requiring soldering a new resistor or something like that..  It could also just be a bad cable.  Is it not possible to connect both monitors directly to the computer?  Then use the receiver as audio.

Right, I did that fix though.

And it works when windows is starting up.

I could, but HDMI is the best interface for audio

Digital optical is just as good.  Either way it's ones and zeros.  The only thing is TrueHD or whatever it's called is not supported with SPDIF.  Only movies use that format, and maybe 5% of the population can hear any difference between the that and regular Dolby 7.1 or DTS.

I'm not sure OP is concerned with sound quality. HDMI is better supported with games. Hardly any games from 2K since 2013 support surround sound through optical. Which means even if you have five speakers, the game only outputs to the front two.

I had no idea that was the case.  I never knew that because I always use my headphones for gaming.  I guess it kinda makes sense.  I know that Titan Fall has like 40 gigs of uncompressed audio files since decompression causes a performance hit.  Maybe that has something to do with it.

Possibly. I think optical sounds marginally better for music with my gear only because my receiver processes the sound a little different than multi channel inputs. But I have no choice with gaming.

Yeah, ill probably just stick with my current receiver for now, it works fine after an hour ish

Could I just leave it on?

Would that be bad for it?

Umm it's just kind of expensive. It will suck in quite a bit of power even if you're actually sending a signal to it. Is it bad for the internal components? Maybe a little because of all the heat generated. You could help by turning down the volume all the way when you're not going to use it for a long time.

I haven't turned my Sony Super Legato off for more than 20 minutes in total in a month now. No problems. It is an old stereo amp though.
