Windows 10 upgrades to happen automatically

...not that Windows 10 doesn’t represent a potentially valuable upgrade, it is that the company has forgotten the fundamental right of customers to choose. And dressing ‘choice’ up as ‘you can just keep saying No’ is a facade everyone should see through…

Looks like the Windows 10 rapture is coming... If you're a Windows 7 or 8 user, Windows 10 is going to be installed on your machine whether you like it or not.

The short:

  • W10 is currently marked as an "Optional" update in Windows Update.
  • Soon this will change to a "Recommended" update. Since most people have their settings set to automatically install Recommended updates, they will turn their computers on one day and have Windows 10, whether they wanted it or not.
  • Even if you uncheck it, every Windows Update runs it'll re-check the W10 update because its a recommended update.

All Windows will have to decide if they're going to fight it or just let it happen... I'm honestly not sure which side I'm going to be on yet. Ive toyed around with Windows 10 a bit and it seems fine (aside from the new Operating System bugs). The only thing that I'm hesitant about is the Microsoft Surveillance bit.

As an aside, my friend sent me this article a few weeks ago and I don't recall seeing it on the WAN show, which seems surprising to me.

Doesn't matter if they care. Matters that I don't want them to know, regardless of whether or not they care. And calm yourself; I run 10.

It's really not all that broken, in contrast to 8/8.1.

It makes me really sad to see someone so willing to not only throw their own rights away, but also tell others they should too.

They wouldn't know. Nobody would. I guarantee you nobody at microsoft just scrolls through the hordes of data they get. Which are mainly just application statistics that better enhance your experience. Besides, even if they DID look through it, I doubt they would comprehend it because, more than likely, it's compiled into matrices in order to view bulk data. Not individuals when it comes to things other than cortona (which, although data is collected, it is stored privately).

Its not broken. I would gladly accept a rebuttal though. I've been using it for some time now; no issues.

Yesterday night, I nearly updated to Windows 10 without knowing it. I noticed that Windows would install updates when shutting down, so I decided to go and check the updates that it would install. Windows 10 Pro was there and checked even though I unchecked and hidden it few weeks ago.

Damn it Microsoft. I will update to Window 10, but probably in 2016 when I want to. You gave us one freaking year to do so.

Let me clarify;

I don't give a shit; it doesn't matter if they don't care. It matters that I don't want them knowing, period. It's my computer, yes? I should have control over my data, yes? Wouldn't you be livid if someone/something started randomly deleted files from your computer, other times uploaded them online and posted it around?

Services > Windows Update > Properties > Disable if you want to forcibly decline the update; you also won't get any further Windows updates, unless you enable it again. :\

It seems to be a mileage-may-vary case with Win 10

Mainly those who used upgrade instead of clean install. Which, last I checked, has been an issue for most OSs. But otherwise, I agree.

I wouldn't call it broken (it is still kinda new so there are some bugs) merely pointless, if it wasn't for dx12 what would it offer me as a gamer, I don't care about the mult-desktop feature or cortana, so what does it have to offer, can you name some features unique to win 10 that matter or were not the 3 I mentioned

Well of course I would. But that's not what microsoft is doing. I don't see you giving Apple shit for the same thing. I.e. Siri.

That's because Apple doesn't have a dominant space in phones. Nor am I forced to use Siri.

I like the gui. So disregarding performance, there aren't any. If that were the case I would have stuck with win 7.

Youre not forced to use cortona either. It can be completely disabled. I'm pretty sure Apple has a very large market share with phones. People are lining up on launch days at midnight. 70% of everyone I know has an iPhone.

Cortana isn't the only thing that collects data. Not much else to say about it. You can turn off all the stuff available in the Control Panel and it'll still send stuff to Microsoft.

And that's why I didn't switch and don't plan to assuming dx12 doesn't impact many games I care about or if vulcan takes charge, as that is windows 10's only selling point, holding an exclusive version of directX hostage.

Just like how Google collects cookies to help with advertising. Or how local events would market off of a previous year's statistics. That's like going to a fair and being upset that they kept track of how many people bought a hotdog. "No, I don't want them knowing I bought a hotdog so they know if they sell enough to keep selling them next year." Dull example, I know. But it's what microsoft is doing. They aren't browsing your personal files for information on you as a consumer. They are collecting statistics to better enhance their products. So let's say one statistic is to see how many people use the old control panel vs modern. They could use that along with the click and keyboard statics to see which feature users use the most in order to streamline them and make them more efficient.

The only thing that worries me is that Windows 10 pcs must ship with secure boot enabled, but implementing a way to turn it off is now optional.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.
