Apple's Tim Cook declares the end of the PC

source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/11984806/Apples-Tim-Cook-declares-the-end-of-the-PC-and-hints-at-new-medical-product.html

while you're reading the article, I'm gonna roll on the floor and laughing my ass off

“I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?”, asks Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, who has just flown into Britain for the launch of the iPad Pro. Cook, whose spotless tailored suit and red poppy belies the fact that he spent the night in a plane, is clearly in ebullient mood. Wall Street and the City are obsessed with the iPhone, the company’s dominant product, but Apple appears quietly confident that its new tablet and TV device are going to help power the company’s continuing growth.

“Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones,” Cook argues in his distinctly Southern accent (he was born in Alabama). He highlights two other markets for his 12.9 inch devices, which go on sale online on Wednesday. The first are creatives: “if you sketch then it’s unbelievable..you don’t want to use a pad anymore," Cook says.

---

the better question is: why would I buy a tablet (namely iPad Pro) when a PC can do it better?

tablets .. tablets aren't about portability, not even productivity, they are about convenience - and do you know what's funny? tablets from either Apple or Microsoft are backpedaling towards laptops (netbooks specifically) by adding physical keyboards

now, let's get back to the point of tablets vs PC

PC

  • configurability
  • upgradability
  • storage capacity
  • connectivity
  • performance / $
  • versatility of use scenarios
tablet
  • portability
that's it!? surely Tim doesn't expect people to just drop all the benefits of PCs over a tablet

how about it Mr. Cook, put your money where your mouth is and stop manufacturing and selling iMacs - surely it would be a astonishing business decision .. NOT!

I dunno what the hell Apple's management is on, but they clearly lost their marbles

Don't think so Tim. Also you contradicted yourself on the portability matter, but whatever.

But they already are, for the average user, a student, a parent, a kid,  an iPad or similar device does everything they need, they can browse the web, do basic documents, play basic games, listen to music, watch films, they can stream to their TV using their apple TV, watch netflix, buy movies, edit photos and movies, share to social media

id say 90% of what 90% of people do, is doable on an iPad (or similar)

Except for the gaming I do, (which arguably could be feasibly streamed like Nvidia Grid) I dont really need a PC - sure i use adobe suite, but if that comes out for iPad pro - it would do the job just fine, im no pro

my parents ONLY use an iPad, my brother uses his most of the time, my sister does not have a single computer or laptop in the house, just her and her boyfriend use ipads

Only me and my brother in my family use PCs, and he really only uses his macbook for work stuff

Of course they're gonna say this. The iphone is their most profitable product and the ipad pro is the second most profitable product.

the average user is but a fraction of the market; and I don't see students using software keyboard over an actual physical one

and ps: parenting isn't a profession  ^_^ and I bet your ass the use of a PC is part of their jobs

I don't think all Apple devices are overpriced, but still this is not ONLY related to apple, this applies to Android too, an Android tablet will do what most people need to do

For the average joe, a PC is quite unnecessary, its really only gamers, and high end performance customers that need PCs

the average user is but a fraction of the market; and I don't see students using software keyboard over an actual physical one

its a BIG portion of the market, what are you talking about? enthusiasts are the small portion

The ipad pro comes with  a keyboard, most android tablets can use a bluetooth keyboard - and hook up to a display

EDIT - no but I mean at HOME,they probably dont need a PC, my parents dont, and most of my friends parents really dont use computers much, maybe if they work in an office, not every job requires a PC

Well tablets and phones are about media consumption. Browsing web, reading docs etc. Watching a video. If that's all you do then ok. For many people it's enough.

Desktops are all purpose machines which can be used for content creation as well, not just consumption. They are also not limited by TDP and battery constraints which means they can be made much more powerful. They are also more modular and can be augmented with more peripherals for specialist applications.

I went to school like 10 years ago, we only just had a few laptops and a computer lab

Yes i know they do NOW, but for example my school in harrogate now gives ipads to every student and they are used in class, lots of uni students use tablets in lectures and stuff too

Tablets can't even run Crysis.

Grabs an Ipad and launches teamviewer on Ipad + PC . If only I still had my ipad and if i bought crysis then i would try that.

I wouldnt pay much attention to him, hes not exactly the most clued person when it comes to devices.

The PC cant die, it evolves and not into what ever apple has down the pipe line, what the hell does he think a mac is? its a personal computer, so his statement is invalid, a tablet, a smart phone, a smart watch what ever IoT or other device is a PC, it has a microprocessor.

The people I live with only use ipads. They all use iphones too. They think android is inferior. I joke with them all the time about how they're apple fanboy's.  It's quite funny tho as they're always asking me to download stuff. I told them Id build them a pc but they're happy with their ipads.

You mean that phone that is one of the most powerful on the market? beating almost every other phone in the benchmarks?

with one of the best cameras (top 10)?

Test -

Ok find me a 13" laptop with a full metal chassis, 12 hours of battery life, a super high res retina display PCI-E based SSDs, intel iris graphics for $1300

Test -

Find me a phone that benchmarks higher than the iPhone, with an equally good camera, that costs less than an iPhone

My laptop isn't high res retina, it's some 1280 x 800 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB. (I bought it 2 years ago)

About the iPhone. My phone is a thousand times faster than that piece of shit iPhone 5 I had. and it's 30% of the price. I also didn't have to pay 100€ extra for 8GB more storage. Because 12.5€ per GB isn't overpriced, right?
