Opening a PC after 20 years...

First of all I'd like to suggest a new forum topic: Horrid builds / Stuff you found in your basement or something. My next 2 pictures will describe what I mean

 

Backstory: A Canadian friend of mine just bought a bowling alley and he wants to replace the computers that run the score system. (20 lanes, 10 lanes / computer, those 2 PC's go back to a central hub.)

 

So he opened up one of those computers to get the software on it and this is how it looked:

I don't even know what those connectors are, I think very old sata cables?

 

This hardware is as old as I am haha.. Luckily I'm a little cleaner ...

Using Pentium2 CPU's too.

And a Soundblaster 64 sound card.

 

See those dipswitch's on the board, thats how we used to set CPU speed, & Overclock!! (I got a 486 DX4-100Mhz @ 120Mhz using this method)

There would be a Table of values listed somewhere, and corresponding values would equal FSB x MULTI = CPU speed.

The one below is a basic table with FSBxMulti already done with CPU speed presets,...others had more variance, 66mhz/75mhz/83mhz/100mhz and listed Multipliers.

Those are IDE cables, and it looks like that one has a PCI mounted CPU. Ah, those were the days.... Gotta love it.

I've seen PCs a tenth of the age that were in WAY WAY WAY worse state than those 20-yo boxes.

Considering bowling alleys aren't places I'd call squeaky clean compared to the run of the mill household, I'm impressed.

I only have to dust off the filters every month or so. Barely any dust in the case since I moved it on an elevated rack

Well.. Not *really* 6 times a day. But I do clean them every 1 or 2 weeks. Deff more than the avg. Mine is elevated too but my dust filters keep getting dirty with a lot of dust all the time

yep those ide/pata/40pin cable where a pain to deal with and scsi cables where a real pain 80 pin if i am remembering corectly
