NOice, although for gaming I would get the 6600k for a GTX 980/R9Fury

PC is Intel Core i5 6400, GIgabyte H170 Gaming 3, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB 2400Mhz ,Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB, WD Blue 1TB, NZXT S340, ASUS Geforce GTX 960. Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/793XNG. Graphics card choices don't always have to be dictated on performance. If you want the game stream and power consumption of the GTX 970 get that. If you want raw performance of the R9 390 get that. In the end we are all gamers, so what if your buddy gets an extra 5 fps?

Yeah, I would but the PC is also going to be used for editing and the i7 should help with that.

Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($141.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB Video Card  ($299.99 @ Newegg)

If you do, just swap the 390 to a 970 or 980.

I would change the PSU to a EVGA SuperNova G2, but saying that a B2 is also a solid unit!

Is your editing software GPU or CPU accelerated?

Is there a noticeable difference between the two? Would it be worth the price difference?

Also, the software is CPU accelerated.

If you do, just swap the 390 to a 970 or 980.

Personally, I just trust Nvidia more and there isn't really much of a difference between the 970 and 390 in terms of performance.

Also, with the 970 you get all the Nvidia gameworks and other things, and the AMD cards can struggle in some games (such as The Witch 3 in cities where the 970 beats a 390x).

Yeah, but AMD cards have upcoming DX12 support unlike Nvidia cards and usually they're cheaper, therefore better price to performance. Also the 970 has a 3.5GB frame buffer, not 4GB as advertised. But if you really want a 980, go for it :P

Thats kinda  a bad decision. If you compare the architectures/specs and compatibility. The 390 is better in a lot of ways. It has better compute, async compute, more memory, OpenCL 2.0. I don't see why you should get a 970. AMD works on gameworks, so the only reason really is CUDA.

If u wanna future proof, amd cards are better.

hello!

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

I thought the 900 series cards supported DX12? Thought that was one of the selling points...

Also, this is going to be for gaming at 1080p so the 3.5/4GB issue doesn't matter too much.

unless you need CUDA or else 970 is a card where no one should ever look at it again. Unless nvidia bring the price down where they won't until the next gen comes out.

it does. just not as good as how amd make it to be. seems like you are not following the scandal haha.

unless you are upgrading your gpu often-ly. actually today itself i can rush it over the 3.5gb with gta v or crysis 3. you might say there are just that few games out there that could. but next year? the year after? 3 years later? unless you gonna upgrade real soon i don't see why you should limit yourself. 8 gb definitely has more future compatibility than 3.5gb.

I like the build you put, I'm sort of on the edge between AMD and Nvidia. I've always had Nvidia because when I bought the GPU it was the newest at the time. I've also heard bad things about AMD... hotter, high power consumption, bad drivers, bad performance on certain games (like The Witcher 3). So I'm not really sure anymore, I'll have to look into it more.

their drivers are fine, their temps are fine(dont forget nvidia had also high temp cards, but no one brings it up nowadays/ witcher 3 is an nvidia optimized game, and the 390 still outperforms the 970, same goes for the 380 vs the 960). Now the power consumption is slightly more than nvidia, but that is what you get in exchange for raw gpu power
