PSU for 960GTX

Mchedlo

Now? nah, it can run even a 290 and i5 fine. In the future? Maybe - HBM2 uses a LOT more power than GDDR5 and so will both AMD and Nvidia cards seeing as Nvidia will not be able to cut out compute from Pascal if they want to have good DX12 numbers

I'm personally going maxwell for my next build and plan on waiting until volta - you may be right about Pascal.  I assume somebody who is building for mid range is someone who doesn't upgrade every generation.  AMD was on the other side of the fence with their HD 6000 and 7000 series, and the tides may turn again with Greenland GPUs.  I'm speaking generally in this case.

On the other side of the fence? Meaning?

Energy efficiency.  IIRC Fermis were power hogs.

5000 was literally half the power used compared to 400 and performed better.

6000 used less than 500 but performed worse

7000 and 600 used the same amount

R9 200 and 700 used the same amount again

R9 300 use more than 900

I couldn't remember which series exactly coincided with Fermi (400/500), but yeah, the HD 5000 series was good for AMD in terms of price/performance/wattage.

I got it now, thank you.

So I guess we'll see what happens with Pascal and Greenland, which both seem to be trying to meet in the middle again.

Arctic Islands* - Greenland is one specific core like GM200 :P

But I'd expect better efficiency after the Nano since the tech is there - a rebranded Nano for cheaper with 980-like power needs.

As for Pascal - I honestly expect another Thermi - Nvidia can't do compute in cards without turning them into ovens - look at the OG Titan - Thermalthrottles like a baus.

My bad.  Yeah, we'll see what happens.  Memory shouldn't be an issue anymore. :P

I honestly find the memory currently to be overkill. I liked it back in the 5000/400 days when devs used 500Mb so efficiently that they made game use almost no memory and look awesome. Look at Skyrim (though that was later) - 512MB of VRAM needed for max Vanilla. Or look at SC2 - 256MB needed.
