Fallout 4 PC Disc Will Not Contain The Entire Game on PC

Yup, as confirmed by Peter Hines (marketing VP) on Twitter.

Obviously this applies only to PC because XBone and PS4 both have Blu-Ray but for us PC folk, we'll have some data on our disc but we're still going to have to download more via Steam.

Why?

Piracy.

Again, another company punishing its clients for piracy.

e61508c61f459083ceb2bf360b2be40f.png

Did they not think that only one pirate can buy the game and afterwards get all the files from Fallout 4?

Jesus Christ, there will ALWAYS be piracy, you can't do much about it.

It's ONLY 30GB, other games have similar sizes (BF4 for example) and come shipped with all discs.

Honestly, I'm not liking this from Fallout 4. I pre-ordered the game on Steam so I don't particularly care much, but penalizing people who still use physical copies is just beyond ridiculous to me. The sole reason why they buy physical copies is usually because of their Internet, and you decide that they still have to download your game?

This really infuriates me, it really does.

I understand where they come from however seeing that this is a singleplayer game, it would make piracy so easy, but it's the same on console, right? The files WILL end up on piratebay, whether you do this or not. There's no point in penalizing the customers in this way.

Anyway, it won't affect many PC players (I reckon a PC study showed that ~99% of games are digitally downloaded) but to those affected, it does suck.

That defeats the purpose of physical copies, sorry for those with slower internet connections.

It doesn't matter what they do to combat piracy as the DRM is easy to crack and only makes people annoyed which encourages piracy (due to the pirated copies being better as well as free)

do you know how much time it takes to burn each disc?

There isn't one guy manually putting the data onto each disc, they have mass data transfer machines to do that. It's a fast process.

there comes a poitn where you have to draw a line in the sand. As technology moves on people will be sad. Its the same as the XP support issue or the win7 support that will end at some point in the future or the radios ditching analogue. Go back further and see the outrage with vinyl or tape. There are losers in this, there always are but sustainably matters more

By that logic, there should not be any physical versions for the consoles.

This is just horribly bad, and stupid. Also, why haven't one single publisher started to offer Blu-ray copies of games. It would've been very nice for those that have the ability. Both my 3 year old laptop and my desktop has a Blu-ray drive.

Some discs contained the game. Some didn't.

I guess I got the one that didn't then.

I got a physical copy of the Evil Within for PC, and it was the same.  xD

Yeah it's basically standard practice, but what they don't realize is that some people don't think non-physical media has inherent value, and not putting the full game on the disc defeats it's purpose.

you dont seem to understand. as demand for a certain format dies the chances for it to carry on slowly decrease. if consoles start having explosive digital sales and few few people brought discs then things would change and we will likely not have discs for the consoles after a few years. They want to move units.

Piracy will only stop when people stop being entitled little pricks.

Piracy will never stop, as it is a part of human nature, theft has predated society

Here's my take: if you're gonna sell me a partially (or fully) digital game as a retail product, you better fucking go above and beyond when it comes to the goodies it includes.

Here's an example, this is the manual I got for Baldur's Gate II back in the early 2000s when I bought it:

2382080-20111218193613.jpg

That motherfucker is 263 pages long: it's a full fucking book and could conceivable be used to play Advanced D&D, like the tabletop fucking game not just the PC game. I actually have brought it as an inmpromptu player's handbook when we only had 1 for all the players. And it wasn't even the only item it came with it also had a map and the 4 cd jewel case with cds.

Now since you're saving on CDs my expectation would be for me to get even more than this since this was 50 bucks 14 years ago. Anything less it's just pure fucking greed.

That is quite a contradictory statement.

On the other note, games have been doing this for some time so it's becoming normal. And I'm the kind of person that loves boxed games more than digital. Good thing you can have both.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Don't see how this matters... We are already seeing huge sizes of day 1 patches, which means you are most likely going to be downloading anyway.

BS of a excuse, these days crackers just download and crack the steam version, steam DRM is easier to crack that the old school keygen games.

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

Then why do it at all?

Either do it or drop it if it doesn't work out.

Digital distribution is very good for a lot of people nowadays. Lorne Lanning , the guy behind Oddworld , talked quite a bit about it. Not only does it get rid of "fuck-ups" , it also gives indie devs a higher profit. For example, back in 1997 , he had to sell his game for $60 in order to get $7 back. Of course, that also included publishers and other things. Now , with the release of New'n'Tasty which is available in download-only format , he said that he could make $7 off a $10 game.
