Audio-Technica ATH-M50X

mattonfire
Go to solution Solved by Lauen,

i don't think so, M50X is a monitor Headphone, so it's signature sound is pretty flat. HD558 my pick if you're into bass.

no.

the M50X has MORE bass than the HD558. Have you even used them?

http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AudioTechnicaATHM50x.pdf

http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SennheiserHD598.pdf (there wasn't 558 but 598 has pretty much the exact same curve)

EDIT: mattonfire I think M50X are good for bass, but if they're available, try to get Beyerdynamic DT770's instead. Better in every aspect on earth.

Anyone know weather I should go with the 250 or 80, they draw more power but as I am using it just for my of that surely won't really matter, if the 250 is worth the power draw I'll get it unless you guys say otherwise.

They draw the same amount of power. 250 needs more voltage, though. It's only worth it if it is significantly cheaper.

Well, again if you just let us know what motherboard that your computer has, then we'd be able to tell you if your system is capable of outputting the right amount of voltage to be able to drive a 250 ohm pair of headphones to listenable levels.

EDIT: Would 250ohm mean it is completely incompatible with a phone, specifically iPhone 5s. (Don't judge :P)

You want low Impedance headphones for small devices like mobile phones. 250ohm is high. The higher the impedance the lower the volume will sound on a weak device.

By the way, the device driving the headphones makes a lot of difference.

I have a pair of M50S (normal m50 with straight cable), on my PC using ether the onboard sound or my Asus Xonar D2X, they lack some bass. Using a equalizer doesn't help much, it can make the sound muddy if u try to force bass.

however

After I bought my FiiO X3K to use at work with some DUNU Dh1000 IEM's (wicked combo btw), I plugged it into my PC in DAC mode with my M50S and it obliterates my PC's sound (both onbaord and D2X). The overall sound is MUCH better and the bass is punchy. Just crank up the volume and it has enough bass that I can feel the pads vibrating on the side of my head.

Cant comment on how they stack up against other options posted here. But I can give them the thumbs up and say that for me, they have great bass, the best thing is its not muddy bass.

If I want it on both I would like a 80, in the middle between PC and Phone.

I can't seem to find the Gigabyte GA-79ZX board online. Are you sure it wasn't the Gigabyte GA-Z97X?

You still would hear great audio on the iPhone 5s, but the listening volumes wouldn't be too loud. At the very least you wouldn't be able to put the volume past anything that would be able to damage your hearing within 1 hour of listening time if I had to guess.

If you want vibration, then just hookup bass shakers to your chair and your floor.

That first paragraph is wrong.

Sensitivity is what matters

The second paragraph (that's just s sentence) is also wrong. It effects it somewhat, but not a lot

True, headphones like the T1 that are 600ohm, but have stronger magnets and lighter membranes actually sound fairly loud despite the fairly high resistances. Although, if the resistance was lower on the T1 it would still be louder.

I looked at your profile and you have an LGA 1150 cpu, so I now know for sure that you meant Gigabyte GA-Z97X (not Gigabyte GA-79ZX). I looked up your motherboard, and it is advertised as being able to drive 600 ohm impedance headphones. So, get the 250 ohm impedance model.

You should search up the Impedance Ballad here in the forums. Someone tested it with a Nokia mobile phone (not even a smartphone, but it plays MP3 files) and the one with the higher sensitivity is the one thats easier to drive. Impedance doesn't mean jackshit in terms of how hard a headphone is to drive.

-Edit- or you can click here for the Impedance Ballad.

I have a pair for home use and campus. if you like bass, then you're in luck. the M50x has a great punchy bass, and are much more controlled (bass wise) than the M50s. the vocals on the M50x are also a bit more forward than the m50, giving you a more intimate sound.

these are one of the best headphones for $200 IMO

I've never used them but from what I've read they are pretty good. You can get a pair on massdrop for 170 USD and it comes with a small amp.

I was going to with the M50x but I got the AKG K553 Pro Studio Headphone insead for $120 on massdrop.

The m50s are already too forward. Why on earth would anyone want something with even more forward mids???

also, I'd hardly call it an intimate sound. I find that I feel somewhat violated (and not in a good way) by the "intimacy" of the m50/x.

It all depends on your ears m8.

Not entirely. This is why measurement charts serve as a better form of data.

Plus, I am not entirely sure if you've listened to other headphones.
