2 Gamers, 1 CPU - Virtualized Gaming Build Log

LTT,

Does this type of VM setup support SLI or crossfire per VM or are you restricted to only one GPU per VM? Also, would you go with the i7 extreme series for this type of rig again or would a Xeon yield better benefits? I do plan on gaming a lot, but the wife plans on gaming and editing.

I don't believe your power supply would handle both of those cards at the same time.  In addition, installing either of those cards into an X1 slot will severely hamper its performance.

Just watched this video again, and I am getting some conflicting answers in different forums. Can you shut down each VM individually and reallocate the resources (CPU cores and GPU's) to change from a solo user config to a 2 person config without reformatting? This would be the only way I would consider this as it allows scaling depending on how many people need to use it.

Is it also possible to run this on an AMD machine? Like an Asus F1A75 with an AMD A8-3870K?

I know the CPU supports virtualisation, however I don't know since I don't find a lot about AMD board used for this type of setups.

could you convert your 7 gamers machine into Ashes of the Singularity rek machine for 7-GPUs in Explicit Multi Adapter??? Let's push the limits!!!

Hit the TimeSpy with as many GPUs as you can as soon as it releases let's take that World #1 ranking!!!

I have a few questions about what hardware to use here, first off im currently running i5 6600k with gtx 980 8GB Ram 750 watt psu.

First question would the i5 6600k be powerful enough to handle a virtual machine with a 980 and possibly 970.

Second, i am uncertain on the unraid setup, would i need to get another ssd and hdd, for my setup  i already have one of each, Linus mentioned formatting drives during the windows 10 install would i need to get all new drives or still be able to use my 2TB hdd and 250gb SSD without wiping them or reinstalling windows 10 on my current ssd.

Thanks for your help

Your CPU supports VT-d and VT-x, so it'll be fine, so long as your mainboard also supports VT-d.  That CPU is only 4 core / 4 thread, so you wouldn't have as many resources available to give to each VM as someone with a 4 core CPU with hyper-threading.  Under unRAID, you'd be able to make use of your 980 and 970, but not both in a single VM -- they'd need to be assigned to separate VMs.

As to your drives, you will certainly need to wipe them *and* re-install your guest OS (in your case, Windows 10).

Tried to do the same.. Using an ASUS z9 PE-D8 WS with two e5 2670's (total of 16 Cores à 2,6Ghz (32Threads)) and a GTX 770. I can not get anywhere near bare performence using unraid to virualize. Using Unraid 6.1.9. Does someone have the Unraid 6.1.3 version Linus used? Maybe there is a quirk here or there.

CPU: Intel i7 4790K @4.8GhZ  CPU Cooler: Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 2  Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97 UD3H  GPU: Asus ROG RX 480 8G OC Memory: 32GB Gskill Ares 2400Mhz  Storage: 2x Crucial M4 512GB SSD (raid0)  / 1TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA P2 750W  Operating System: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB (64 bit) Other: NZXT Hue+ LED Controller with 8 LED Strips for desk and PC lighting

Linus (and everyone else!), are you able to confirm that the two good GCs are getting x16 slots each? Or is your last/bottom card only getting x8 lanes?

I have a question how well would a tower with a 6950x and 4 GTX1080s fair in games, if you had 4 VMs running windows?

can someone here compile a list on pcpartpicker thats actually reasonable to build in order to accomplish this?

i tried adding up the parts and didnt even get the gpu's added and noticed it was at 2 grand already, thats insane.  and i even downed the CPU to a lesser but still great CPU.

for example, im sure its possible to get rid of 2 of the Hard Drives, but i have no idea which ones.  and there has to be a cheaper motherboard that still can do this, but i dont got the know-how to put together a build.

Hey there LTT. I watched the vid that this thread refers to and I also watched Use your Gaming PC's Extra Power as a NAS Ultimate Guide and I had a question or few. I noticed you went with the 6700k and the Asus Z170 Deluxe MB and I was wondering if there was a specific reason you went with said board instead of something else in that Asus lineup as in the Pro Gaming or the TUF Sabertooth or other variant? I am getting ready to do the same type of setup for an "all in one" gaming/NAS rig and I just want to make sure the reasoning behind specific parts of your build.

My build consists of (just need to decide on the MB):

6700k

EVGA 980 ti SC+

32Gb Vengence DDR4 LPX 2400 (2x16)

M.2 OCZ RD400 256Gb SSD

Chronos 480Gb SSD (not sure if I am going to use this)

a handful of Deskstar 750gb 7200 3Gb/s HDDs for NAS storage. (I have 6 new on hand)

Thanks for your input and LOVE the shows! Keep em coming!

I need help, I'm doing this as a final project in my computer class and in the network settings Linus has the "Setup bridge" option and I don't. I can't start the Array without it. My only thought is because I'm on the school network and it just won't work. Is the school network a problem or is there a way I can fix it?

Just wondering, why the 3 different graphics cards? Is that a requirement, or could you use 2 or 3 identical?

Or just 2 identical for the two VMs and one for the unRaid to grab?

Would this kind of software deployment work on a HP ProLiant DL370G6? It has dual Xeon X5650 CPUs with 32GB ram, dual 750 Watt power supplies, and 2 GTX 1060s. It also has an 8 drive SAS raid array(currently in RAID5) but I do have several native sata ports that I can connect SSDs to. I have windows 7 pro installed on this right now but if this hardware would support a setup like the one in this video I would really like to try it.

Okay. I tried the same thing Linus Did with some other hardwares.

i7-7700K

MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon

32GB G.Skill

R9 Fury X x2

GTX 750ti

I got everything to work but I stooped in one spot- installing the AMD drivers.

The VM that installed the driver turns off automatically and when I reboot it it gives me the fix-window-kinda thing. This happens all the time and forces me to re-install the OS all over again. (Its win 10 by the way)

Can anyone help?

Finally finished building my setup! Been wanting to do this since Linus first did it. This is the coolest setup I've ever done.

Dual X5670s

Asusz8pe-d18

2 MSI 1050ti low profile

48 GB RAM

But I'm having issues with RAM right now. Posted in unRAID also, but not many there use unRAID for this setup so I figured someone here might have a better answer.

I've assigned each VM only 16GB. I had assigned more but the dashboard kept telling me the memory was maxing out and my VMs would crash. But I've got them down to 16 now, for a total of 32 out of 48 being requested, and the dashboards memory usage monitor keeps creeping up to 100% again.

Anyone dealt with this?

Buddy of mine was just telling me he was having similar weird issues as me with 6.2.4. I don't know how I didn't see that there is now a version 6.3.1 when I did this. Think I'm just used to sourceforge which has latest download at the bottom of the list.

I made other mistakes last night with setup. So I'm going to go ahead and start from scratch tonight with 6.3.1 to see what happens.

Rebuilt my setup completely from scratchwith 6.3.1 and everything seems to be normal. Both VMs set to 20GB RAM and dashboard sits at a steady 89% used.

Thanks for your help, everyone.
