8 GB RAM not enough anymore?

Is 8GB RAM still enough after Star Wars Battlefront? Are games gonna start using more than 8GB RAM?

Yes.  No but if you plan on running things in the background then 16GB might be better.

Anyone who knows anything about tech will never say a certain amount of RAM is all you need forever. RAM usage was bound to go up at some time.

Are you talking about RAM or VRAM?

Most games aren't really RAM intensive, because they have the option of VRAM.

The current Frostbyte engine does not require more than 8GB in realistic scenarios.

once upon a time, a wise man said we would never need more than 32MB.

and see where we are now.

basicly, theres no single amount of ram that'll be "future proof"

you can only guess how much you plan on using in the future, and base your choice on that.

leaving dimm slots empty for a future upgrade is generally a good idea tho.

Mostly yes,

In some cases like the new Battlefrontbeta it's technically needed, but basically in any AAA-Titles today it's enough, bottom end but definately enough.

If you're doing heavy Videoediting, streaming or have a lot of tabs and programms open, then it probably makes perfectly sense.

And one of the awesome parts of RAM is that you can easily upgrade any time.

8gb is fine. Ram requirements always have a high fudge factor because everyone's usage is different.

Digital Foundry ran a video of Battlefront on an i7-4790, R9 290x, and with 8GB system RAM, and the game was flawless on it.

Heck, even 6GB is enough.

GTA V has a memory leak or something, as I have had it use 5GB by itself after playing for a couple of hours. Add in the 2GB Windows 7 wants and you're over 6GB.

Though personally, if on a DDR3 platform I'd upgrade to 16GB now while RAM is cheap, unless you're planning to upgrade in the next year or so to Skylake or X99. 16GB isn't needed now, but if you wait another year or two maybe it'll be crazy expensive once they stop making it.

Most if not all ATX sized motherboards have room for 4 modules, so it's not that important to go for 16GB if you're building right now. If you are building a smaller computer however, with an m-atx or m-itx board where only two slots are present, i personally went with 2*8GB. But if the budget is tight, a single 8GB chip is still good.

If you plan on doing any streaming while playing it probably not.

Will test now to see ram usage.

Max I saw it use was ~3.5GB. + Chrome + Skype, Curse, TS open it  near 10 GB

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

Good thing about RAM is that it is always cheaper to buy 8GB now and then other 8GB later when price drops even more and games start to use more RAM.

The only times my 8gb is near full is video encoding.

Seen it past 4-6gb in most games, few exceptions of it ever passing 6-8gb, pretty much never. Only when in beta forms will it be pushed.

But RAM is cheap enough to not worry about it.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
