EU court bans US companies (Facebook, Google and Co) from storing EU citizens' data on US servers

The top EU court today ruled that the privacy of EU citizens isn't adequately protected in the US. This ruling invalidates the "Safe Harbor" agreement of 2000.

 

As a result, data from EU citizens may no longer be stored on US servers, where US intelligence agencies have access to it. 

The technology companies will have to review their data protection policies and start fresh negotiations with the European privacy commissions before they would be allowed to store data on US soil again.

Personal opinion : While this could be considered a victory for the EU citizens, it's only a hollow one.  While the companies may not store the data on US servers anymore, nothing stops them from letting it pass through those servers, leaving plenty of opportunities for the intelligence agencies to scoop it up as it enters or leaves the US. 

Also, nothing stops GCHQ from scooping it up in the EU and then sending it to said US agencies for "national security reasons"

I know it's a tired phrase, but people still use Facebook seriously in 2015? My girlfriend and her mom uses the service, but only for communicating with stubborn friends and family and that's about it. Others however..I can't fathom why people concerned with privacy even use the site anymore after countless reports discussing their data is not safe at all. 

 

Creepy stalkers and creepier employers snooping around is another intensive to not bother with Facebook.If you care at all about your privacy, you'd give Facebook a pass. Haven't bothered for over 7 years and haven't missed a thing.

I've started sending takedown notices on photos that include me a while ago. So far only had to report only a couple hundred photos that were fairly shortly removed from facebook.

If you ask the US intelligence agencies, they would claim they have a right to demand data stored on servers in other countries so......not a big deal really.

 

Not that I'm okay with that, because it's wrong as all hell. But since when did the US government listen to common sense, the law, or it's own citizens?

I know everyone loves having physical locations on their soil, but I hope this is just for those companies. I mean if it wasn't it means that smaller spots that don't have data centers in the EU straight up can't have user from their because they only have centers in the U.S. which would be stupid.
