The-Wepod-is-the-first-self-driving-elec

Netherlands might already be taking the next big step towards autonomous driving: public transport. Called the WEpods, these electric shuttles will be ferrying commuters between the towns of Wageningen and Ede in Gelderland starting November. And it won't be settling for just some special, restricted road. These self-driving pods will be cruising along public roads and rubbing shoulders with regular vehicles and drivers. Designed by French car maker and robotics company EasyMile, the WEpod and its predecessor, the EZ10, has already ferried about 19,000 passengers in Vantaa, Finland as well as serving passengers in Lausanne, Switzerland's EPFL university campus. How passengers will ride on the WEpod is equally interesting. They can reserve seats through an app and indicate where they want to be picked up and where they're headed. How the shuttle will get there and to all other destinations will all be up to the WEpod themselves. The car is already delivered.

 

The long wait is over .. now the autonomous car will be on streets..No driver required...just sit in the car...and get a ride...use app like uber.. just enjoy the journey.. It is not for airport.. regular road commute..Anyone here want to give it a try????

yeah, enjoy the journey at sub 50km/h and non existant acceleration... as comfy as this can be, I don't see it as particularly practical compared to a normal car at this time.

Most work in commercial planes is done by the computer anyways.The pilots are there mainly for the take-off and landing , and to make sure nothing wrong happens with the autopilot.

Even if the speed is low, I'd rather get in one of these than a normal taxi, especially if there's an app where you can easily set up your pickup and dropoff points ahead of time. It's not a practical replacement for owning a car generally speaking, but if I were visiting I would use this.

That's cool, I know lots of people that would like a self driving car (I'm sure they would be very apprehensive at first).

I enjoy driving far too much to get one my self.

Hell, I've driving to places following people I could have gotten a ride with because I just wanted to enjoy the drive.

yeah, enjoy the journey at sub 50km/h and non existant acceleration... as comfy as this can be, I don't see it as particularly practical compared to a normal car at this time.

 

I do see it as practical. 

 

Compared to a regular car, there's no need to get all riled up about traffic, no need to look for parking spots, no need for a drivers license (I never bothered getting mine, for me owning a car just doesn't make sense from a practical and financial standpoint). 

Compared to a taxi, there's no need to interact with a taxi driver (face it, most of them either don't speak your language properly or are just plain annoying) and it'll always know how to get to your destination.

Sure, but you'd take longer to get there. It may be practical if you don't have a license, but most people who need a car do.
