Earthquake proof PC

I had one big concern since i build my first PC, will it survive an earthquake? I live in Chile, 8+ magnitude earthquakes are common here, and we had an 8.3 las night, and my computer is fine!!! YAY

ok...i'm gonna blame my inability of thinking of doing that on the earthquake...#FeelingDumb

well... the obvious thing would be to not have hard drives, because those are the sensitive bits.

 

if you have big graphics cards or a large tower cooler, maybe brace them a bit.

 

other than that, most of what's in a pc is rather earthquake proof.

I build it with quakes into consideration, and it doesn't get much stronger than an 8.3

If money wasn't an issue , i'd personally go with a custom case/chasis made out of a titanium alloy. I would also go full SSD storage, no HDD's, securing all bigger components (CPU cooler, GPU...).

 

This can only make it stronger, not "proof"... 

 

Otherwise, just kick out that HDD and put an SSD (or SSD's).

That's why i switched to an SSD. I didn't even know that it was faster than an ordinary HDD, i just knew that it was shock "proof", and i needed that (laptop user here)

He is saying that SSD's should be able to survive even the strongest quakes because they have no moving parts, like your phone.

I soft mounted my HDD and it's fine. It's about how being able to have things under certain conditions, not having to pay massive premiums for storage

Reservoir....that would be a bad idea, my corsair H105 and my brother's hyper 212 evo are fine (His rig survived the 8,8 we had in 2010, that thing was another level)

Ya certain tower coolers should be perfectly fine unless they use push pins like the Hyper T3 or something

The effect that surface seismic waves is pretty much same that what having PC in car or other transport. It receives some vibrations. If it was running, there would be problems with HDD and maybe fans or water cooling gear. Powered off, nothing major from just seismic waves. I think more issue would be case dropping from table to floor or something dropping on top of it. Or case falling to its side.

It was running, and my HDD survived. Thank Guetto HDD soft mount!
